We found the Ryokan Sanoya comfortable, clean, and conveniently near to the the JR Kyoto station and Yodobashi, and had an enjoyable 2 night stay:) We booked the traditional Japanese room with 4 futons on tatami mats so that the kids and baby could roll around safely at night and we were too tired to mind that the futons can... We stayed in Hotel Sanoya for three nights.the hotel was walking distance...i mean less than 5 minutes from the train station. Arriving 10 minutes before midnight, we were greeted by a very friendly staff, even though we were already 2 hours later than the ETA.Hungry travelers that we were, a staff directed us to a 7-eleven ( approx 2 minute-walk)that had... We booked our accommodation in Kyoto a little late and didn't have a lot of options in busy April and Hotel Sanoya was the only one that could accommodate our party of 5 (3 adults 2 young children). Having never stayed in a Ryokan style hotel before we didn't quite know what to expect but the moment we arrived every... More

Very basic hotel, food was okay. Internet was hit or miss in the room during peak usage. It's great to be so close to the train station, but there wasn't much to necessarily love about this place. The staff was friendly. Best used for it's location.

Very friendly stuff and we got the futon bed room on the 2nd floor. The location is just on the first block near the Kyoto train station where all the major bus departs (tourist lines 100 and 101 among others). They are quite a lot to do in the train station area (Isetan department store + Porta dinning restaurants +... More

Stay there for one night in transit to Nara. The hotel is a short distance to Kyoto JR Station and is just less than 5 minutes away, convenient and super easy to get around. The room is big and a Japanese style bedroom is served. The rate includes a set dinner and breakfast in a big eating place. The food... More

We stayed at this hotel for three nights in March 2015 and enjoyed our stay thoroughly. The location is close to the train station. The staff were, without fail, very polite and eager to help with our questions. The Japanese breakfast was so good and different each day. Each evening the staff come and roll out the futon beds, which... More

I had the pleasure of staying at this hotel for two nights, and it was by far the most authentic Japanese accommodation of my trip. Our rooms were sparse, as is tradition, but quiet, clean and very spacious for two people. Each evening, the maids prepared our futons on the floor and in the mornings, provided in-room tea service. We... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
