We stayed here for several nights while in Kyoto. It was the cheapest hotel on our trip (~$60/night for room with two beds). The hotel was absolutely clean (like most places in japan), but you could tell that it was built a while back. I thought it was great, given the price point.

The hotel was fine neigh but the bed and the pillows actually could damage your body. Not a comfortable sleep at all. Went down to ask for softer pillows, no can do. If the hotel could update pillows to not be bean bag cement rocks it would have been great. For now I'll ice my neck.

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. On the fist night at 2am we get a call from the front desk telling us to turn the water off and why was it overflowing. I assured them we had no water on. The next day we head out and come back to towels outside our door and a note saying... More

I stayed there for 2 nights, with my husband and some family. The beds are very comfortable, the rooms are clean and the location is very good, in shijo, 20 minutes walk to the river. Our rooms were in the 10th floor and in the rooms of one side of the hotel there was a continous and very annoying noise... More

In general, this is a well located hotel for central Kyoto sites that can all be reached either by walking or local transport. The rooms are small, but functional and in a generally good state of repair. Windows that opened wide were a bonus when staying on a smoking floor. We didn’t have breakfast included, but there was a breakfast... More

This hotel is clean and decent. It's about 4 blocks west of a subway station. There's free wifi. However, if I could do it all over again, I would get a hotel closer to the Main Kyoto station downtown. That would be more centrally located and would make trips to the different Kyoto sites much easier. Again, there's nothing wrong... More

Stayed a couple of nights. The hotel is in a good location walking distance to underground station, plenty if shops and restaurants and busses to downtown. Room was small but clean and functional. Wifi patchy but staff super welcoming and helpful. Good value for money based on what we've seen elsewhere in kyoto. All in all good experience and would... More

We booked a last minute trip to Kyoto so our hotel choices were very limited. We chose The Smile hotel for the location. Our room is clean but very, very small. They make a good effort for the size, the staff a friendly and helpful, but really not much going for the hotel other than location. I would look to... More

Stay here for two nights while exploring Kyoto. The hotel is very centrally located. Its a five minute walk to the nearest subway station and there is a bus stop almost right out front. Gion was about a 20 walk or you just hop on the bus which seems to come by every minute. My room was very clean. The... More

Had a bit of trouble finding it, just because of where it showed up on our google map versus where it's actually located. When we did find it we were very pleasantly surprised at how clean the hotel was, how friendly the staff was and it was in a great location. I would definitely stay here again if I return... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
