Had an awesome 3 nights stay here. Check counter opens till quite late. But you should probably give them a call to let them know of your late arrival. (some hotels in Japan closes their check in counter quite early) The room was really spacious and for the price it was totally worth it. Location is pretty good as its... More

Lets get the basics out of the way - the room is great, the location is extremely accessible and the service is awesome The staff make the place amazing. If you are a foreigner and skeptical about not knowing Japanese, this this is the place for you All the staff know the right ingredients for a perfect holiday. I didnt... More

We stayed at Smile Hotel for three nights and were really pleased with the hotel. The location is excellent, easy to get around other areas of Kyoto and close to lots of restaurants. The room itself was small but with great facilities provided in the bathroom. The hotel is slightly tricky to find with not the most helpful directions on... More

In a country full of pretty small hotel rooms, we were lucky to get room 603; from the evac plan on the back of the door, it seemed that the third room on each floor was much bigger than the rest. We had plenty of room to spread out, two big comfy beds (with big comfy pillows; I'm not sure... More

We stayed here for several nights while in Kyoto. It was the cheapest hotel on our trip (~$60/night for room with two beds). The hotel was absolutely clean (like most places in japan), but you could tell that it was built a while back. I thought it was great, given the price point.

The hotel was fine neigh but the bed and the pillows actually could damage your body. Not a comfortable sleep at all. Went down to ask for softer pillows, no can do. If the hotel could update pillows to not be bean bag cement rocks it would have been great. For now I'll ice my neck.

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. On the fist night at 2am we get a call from the front desk telling us to turn the water off and why was it overflowing. I assured them we had no water on. The next day we head out and come back to towels outside our door and a note saying... More

I stayed there for 2 nights, with my husband and some family. The beds are very comfortable, the rooms are clean and the location is very good, in shijo, 20 minutes walk to the river. Our rooms were in the 10th floor and in the rooms of one side of the hotel there was a continous and very annoying noise... More

In general, this is a well located hotel for central Kyoto sites that can all be reached either by walking or local transport. The rooms are small, but functional and in a generally good state of repair. Windows that opened wide were a bonus when staying on a smoking floor. We didn’t have breakfast included, but there was a breakfast... More

This hotel is clean and decent. It's about 4 blocks west of a subway station. There's free wifi. However, if I could do it all over again, I would get a hotel closer to the Main Kyoto station downtown. That would be more centrally located and would make trips to the different Kyoto sites much easier. Again, there's nothing wrong... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
