I cannot recommend this traditional ryokan highly enough! From the first instance, the welcome was impeccable. All the staff were incredibly attentive and helpful, this is usual in Japan but felt even more so in this hotel. We arrived early so were able to leave our bags before we checked in. When we had arrived at the correct time they... More

Anyone visiting Japan must spend one night in a Ryokan, and this one seems (as I have not been able to compare with others) a very good choice. Well located, in front of a temple gardens, quiet, very professionally run, excellent food for dinner and breakfast (included in price). One suggestion for management: After paying a hefty price, charging for... More

Staying in a traditional Japanese inn was a must for us on our trip to Japan, and Gion Hatanaka was undoubtedly a good choice for us to experience this. The location is great and the staff were very helpful. We found the futon beds very comfortable and slept well. But really, we did not want to spend any time in our... More

All the other reviews have said it all. Gion is a lovely part of Kyoto, and this ryokan is brilliantly situated. My husband and I adored every second we spent in the Hatanaka. I could not recommend it more highly. Yes, it's expensive, but hey, you are given your very own personal, kimono-wearing maid, who speaks nothing but Japanese yet... More

Experienced the wonderful Maiko dinner and interactions and dinner was wonderful. Close by to wonderful scenery and temples, boutique shops and wonderful food options in close proximity. Rooms were spacious and staff professional. Wonderful stay.

We choose this Ryokan out of many potential ones in our long list and were enjoying every moment of it. Located right at the heart of Gion and within walking distance to Kiyomizudera, this traditional hotel has all that we had expected. Nice clean , spacious and tidy tatami room. The decor is traditional, elegant and simplistic. Onsen is great... More

Overall we had an amazing experience at this ryokan. We visited during our honeymoon and anyone going to kyoto without trying the ryokan experience would be crazy! It was incredibily FUN to stay here (even though for only one night). The location is perfect, walking distance from two temples and right in the hagashiyama neighborhood. The japanese hosts were incredibily... More

Location is very good, a few steps from Gion's main attractions but that would be it. Rooms are large but not in pristine condition, the one we had had stains here and there. The kaiseki dinner wasn't great (we had a much better one in the plane!!) and we found the service just nice (even a bit stressful/rude for our... More

After researching for hours we selected this one due to its location which is about as good as you can get around the shrines and popular walking streets. Foreigner friendly and very nice staff. Each room has a private bathroom and heat / air. Ask for 4th floor to get a room with a view. Entire hotel is smoking (normal... More

We stayed at Gion for one night as we couldn't afford any longer and we found our stay very relaxing and comfortable. We were in one of the deluxe rooms (which I'd booked by accident) and we had so much space that we didn't know what to do with it, it felt like our own apartment! We didn't eat at... More
