A luxurius oasis in the middle of traditional Gion neighborhood in Kyoto. Immaculate service in pristine rooms. The Hatanaka just exceded our expectations. Superb Japanese experience. The public baths and food are just outstanding, as is the attention of the staff. A little expensive but worth it.

Great location, extremely friendly staff and a true ryokan experience. You get a tea sitting when you arrive, either in-room dinner or a maiko dinner and a fantastic traditional Japanese breakfast the next day. Would recommend attending the maiko dinner show - it was one of the highlights of our trip.

It is hard to imagine the magic atmosphere of this Ryokan from its website pictures. The giant flagstone walkway gives you a sense of depth into the Ryokan. At night, with the orange colour lanterns, it is very mysterious. We're extremely happy with our stay here. Its located right outside the temple. We can see the park from our window,... More

Very good location. Right next to the temple and Gion street. There is easy access to great shopping. The staff were courteous and very helpful. The breakfasts were wonderful - they even gave half of us western an half of us English. The rooms were wonderful, The onsen was very nice.

The first place in Japan where the staff was either fluent or spoke English very well. The service is nothing short of excellent. They really want you to have an enjoyable stay. The ryokan is really nice looking right in the heart of the gion district and close to the metro. We did not have the dinner but we had... More

I was expecting a real traditional ryokan, but even though the experience was positive and the service as you'd expect, perfect, the whole experience was more for tourists than the real thing. The room was ok, but the view was on the roofs of the other building. What was missing was the mystic atmosphere. Good dinner, and friendly staff.

My friend and I were wow'd when we were shown our room. It was everything we expected of an authentic Japanese accommodation experience. The room was beautifully laid out. Immaculately clean. The toilet was the most advanced smart toilet I've seen throughout my travels of China, Seoul and Japan. The bathroom, which we didn't use because we made use of... More

Beautiful place, great location right in the middle of the Gion district with all its hidden gems. The Ryoken it self is very quaint and immaculate and offers the full experience we wanted. Highly recommended, both my girlfriend and I were very happy as we spent a little more than we usually would for accommodation on this place. Must try... More

We got pretty much what we expected really from our stay at the Gion Hatakanaka and that is what we wanted, a taste of the traditional Japanese lifestyle and hospitality, a change from our usual style of hotel accommodation. We loved the room, a superior twin room, with sitting room and adjoining sleeping quarters, private bathroom with deep, square wooden... More
