The Gion Hatanaka ryokan in Kyoto was a very nice facility and the food and location were excellent although I do not think it warranted a rate of $550 per night especially since they charge for water. However, the real disappointed came when we received the final bill and discovered that the facility uses Reuters Wholesale (whoever they are) exchange... More

Our first Rayokan experience could not have been better. The kids loved the public bath experience as much as the adults. Separate male and female baths. Spacious clean tatami rooms allowed us to sleep in a row which for the kids was like a camping trip. Our package included dinner and breakfast. Food is beautiful but very different and was... More

Stayed here just for one night on a quick visit to Kyoto and glad we chose this place. The location is right in the gion area next door to the Shinto shrine and a very short walk to the main area of gion. The ryokan is in traditional Japanese style with both dinner and breakfast included in the price (they... More

As non-Japanese visitors we were keen to try a ryokan as a family. We stayed for just one night and we are pleased we did it but one night was enough. Good points: the overall experience, ability to have private bath facilities (not available at all ryokan but important for us), quality of food. Overall impression of buildings/facilities: modern ryokan... More

This was the 2nd ryokan my friend and I stayed at in the Kyoto area. The hotel's location, next to Maruyama Park and the Gion, is prime. We stayed in a two room suite in the 4th floor of the hotel with our own small soaking tub and room attendant. The attendant came by at 4pm with matcha and a... More

Staying at this beautiful hotel with its charming entrance, perfect location and nostalgic Japanese style room was definitely an enjoyable treat. Our room had great amenities, typically low Japanese styled furniture, futons to sleep on, sliding door and traditional small sized wooden bathtub. Receptionist were very helpful with giving us directions and recommendations about exploring Kyoto. Truly satisfied with our... More

Gion Hatanaka is relatively big for a Ryokan, which can put some people off. The location is really good and in general there is nothing to fault in the rooms. The service and spa area are also praiseworthy. We had the Kaiseki dinner, which was a nice experience but not as memorable as we had hoped.

This is a well appointed ryokan in a great locality next to the Yasaka shrine. From the entryway to the room, you'll be impressed by both the service and the place. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the bathrooms/toilets are modern and beautifully styled. We had breakfast in the room - the food was traditional but delicious and plentiful.... More

We stayed 2 nights and I'd encourage anyone thinking of staying over to spend more that a single night there. Its effortless - from the super efficient check-in to the first rate 'tutorial' on what's what at Hatanaka and how to behave where and when. It was great. Japan is layered with social ritual most of which is unseen by... More
