Stayed here for one night during a trip to Japan in February. Delightful experience - Have been to Japan many times but never stayed in a Ryokan so this was some experience. They really pamper you...with attendants who are always around and yet discreet, the way breakfast is served which is fit for a Shogun, the immaculate room, attached hot... More

Rather than stand around on the corner in Gion, hoping to have sight of a Maiko on her way to an appointment, why not book an evening performance at Gion Hatanaka. Combined with a kaiseki menu and unlimited drink, this is a rare opportunity to see the Maikos perform. The atmosphere is very relaxed, with a small number of tables... More

Everything about this place was perfect to me. Proximity to temples & the old shopping street that basically runs all the way from Kiyomizu to the ryokan...the traditional bath in the basement...the bath & shower in the room...the automated toilet...the staff...the in-room served breakfast...solid WiFi...everything! Absolutely recommended if you want a ryokan & can afford this one. Also, Yonemura...a chef's... More

Apart from the friendly Japanese staff that made it a point to greet you ( even down to the owner's daughter who personally greeted each room to ensure that you are having a good time), if you had been hopping around ryokans, then you would think the food served is probably .. average in terms of taste, but presentation wins... My family spent a night in Kyoto and we decided to try a Ryokan to feel the traditional japanese hotel style. Gion Hatanaka was a fantastic choice. The place is gorgeous, well decorated and well located in the Gion neighbourhood. The staff is very courteous and everything worked as planed. If possible, try the public bath. Very interesting place.

I was only in Kyoto for two days and one night and chose to stay at Gion Hatanaka. I had no regrets . it was most charming and the baths were beautiful . Service was outstanding and rooms were tastefully appointed. It is however, expensive .

I have not stayed at the ryokan, so I am reviewing only the "Maiko Evening" event held there several time a week. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only opportunity in Kyoto to interact with real Maiko for anyone who is not a VIP businessman. It's not a tourist trap for Westerners either - the setting is... More

Surreal. If words failed me and I had to sum up our experience at this breathtaking Ryokan in Kyoto with only one, that would be it. We took a trip to Japan as a 30th birthday celebration and decided to spend one night at a traditional Ryokan in Kyoto. One night wasn't enough! The service and quality of everything we... More

We stayed at Gion Hatanaka last week for 4 days with my family. The service by the staff there was superb. We have morning breakfast included and Shimo-o san who attended to us was wonderful. Each morning she brought in tea for us to wake us up and 20 min later (afraid that we will not wake up), she will... More

We went to the Gion Hatanaka for the Geiko and Maiko show and dinner. We learned all about the life of a Geisha and the training that goes into becoming a Geisha. The dinner was excellent Japanese styled dinner with delicious fish/sushi and all the Sake you wanted. The show was interesting and informative. We were able to talk with... More
