I have just returned from Japan after staying 3 nights in Gion Hatanaka. I absolutely loved this ryokan and would be delighted to go back. Our room was fabulous. We had 2 futon beds, a sitting area and a lovely deep wooden tub in the bathroom. The tub and shower was very much appreciated as we also stayed in a... More

I've stayed now at the Gion Hatanaka three times and I can't imagine staying elsewhere in Kyoto. The location right next to the Yasaka shrine and the gorgeous park, on the edge of the ancient, charming Gion district is perfect. Everything is impeccable - the service, rooms, public bath and most of all, the food. Every dish at breakfast and... More

I absolutely had the best experience ever in any hotel, ryokan, or any lodging place I've ever been to. The location was great, the place was wonderful, the food was awesome, and the staff and service was second to none. I will absolutely stay at Gion Hatanaka again when I visit Kyoto again. Thank you Gion Hatanaka for the wonderful... More

What a fantastic and authentic place! You will have all the luxuries and the conveniences of the most modern Japanese hotel (with a private bathroom, full privacy of your suite, etc.), and will experience the real ryokan hospitality, architecture and customs. I recommend you get the booking for full room-and-board. There are two huge advantages to this. 1. You will... More

Nice place to stay during your time in Kyoto. Great location! We didn't opt for the meal upgrade. Rooms were comfortable. Truthfully, I expected a little more based on the reviews. A bit disappointed that the Maiko dinner wasn't provided during our stay. Nevertheless, overall a good experience.

We wanted to experience a ryokan in our first visit to Kyoto and Gion Hatanaka was absolutely great. The place is beautiful, rooms are very nicely decorated and spacious, the onsen room is huge and the food is awsome.

I spent 2 dreamy nights at Gion Hatanaka last week, and it was the most wonderful experience we had in Kyoto. The place came highly recommended by an insider who's been coming to Japan for many years, and it certainly did not disappoint! The location was absolutely 5 star, smack next to Yasada shrine, which we got to walk through... More

We loved our stay in Kyoto at the Gion Hatanaka. It is extremely well located near the temples area and downtown. It was our first ryokan experience and I highly recommend it. We were given a host, Shimo-o, who was just lovely and made us feel very special. She provided house clothes and all things to make our stay comfortable... More

One of the reasons I booked this property was because on their booking.com page, they mention that they can cater to special diets. Unfortunately I have celiac disease and I cannot eat gluten or I will become very ill. I requested gluten free food in my booking along with an explanation. My family of 6 was super excited to come... More

Stayed there for 3 nights, and this was the first time we stayed in a Ryokan. We absolutely enjoyed the entire experience, from the pampering, to the kimono changing, the hot bath, and the kaiseki dinner....so delicate, intricate, and delicious..everything was arranged in a certain way for a reason. Thumbs up! Location was also perfect, 5 minutes walk to the... More
