I'm Japanese but I write review in English so that foreigners can also read. You can enjoy all of the Japanese traditional culture in Shiraume. They offer superb Japanese cuisines, Japanese flower arrangement, calligraphy, art of ceramics and lacquer works, traditional architecture, relaxing sounds of river, garden, etc. It's almost like a Japanese culture museum. What's more, you can enjoy... More

Excellent cuisine (the best and most beautiful meals we have had in Kyoto) and hospitality and friendliness and amenities and ambiance and the scent of the tatami-rooms, which inspired me to make this haiku: "tatamis' yellow a guest embalmed by straw scent rests at Shiraume's". A bit less than excellent we found its location. All night long the noise of... More

My sister and I stayed here for one night after reading reviews here on Trip Advisor. What an incredible experience we had. From the moment we stepped through the purple fabric at the entrance, we knew we were in for something special. We arrived early and were offered a cool drink and a sit down, check in was in a... This is one of the most expensive stay we have tried and it does live up to the expectation. Food was great, room was perfect with the private tub, tatami mats and awesome views. Some things that we were disappointed with, everything is about money here even if you have paid for the room, we wanted to ask for a... More

Worth every penny! Tomoko San is just a very special lady and Shiraume is a very special place. I won't leave a long review because I think most people cover the sentiment here you can't put a place like this into words, it's simply out of a dream. You won't be disappointed and its a must to have the Kaiseki... More

If you, like me, read Memoirs of a Geisha and were transported back to that time of tradition, elegance, beauty and history then this is the Ryokan experience for you. The location brings you to the Shirakawa stream on what must be the prettiest street in Gion. The Shiraume was a Ochiya in its' former life and you can just... More

We absolutely love this ryokan! We had the Umesono room and it was an exquisite experience from the time we enter the hotel till we say goodbye to Tomoko-san. Snacks, dinner and breakfast were served privately in our room and Tomoko-san was the most wonderful host and she shared a lot with us about the Japanese culture and food in... More

We recently visited Japan upon my request for my fortieth birthday and I have to say that staying at Shiraume absolutely made our visit and will remain a truly magical memory for us. Tomoko the owner is so wonderful and made us feel as if we were, as was remarked when we checked-in "in our own home". Although this home... More

I have really nothing to add to all the other reviews - a wonderful night with perfect hosts. A true once in a lifetime experience. We stayed on Fire mountain night - when bonfires mark out Kanji figures on the surrounding mountains, which only added to the exceptional impression nature of this place. An indicator of how special it is... More

Stayed for 2 nights and absolutely loved it. Tomoko is a wonderful host and a wealth of knowledge about Japanese culture. Breakfast is fantastic. Kaiseki dinner was a highlight. Awesome to stay in historic gion, set over a stream on one of the prettiest streets in Kyoto it feels like you are stepping back in time.
