Spent one night at Shiraume last week. They were sold out the second night so stayed at the Ritz. It was a magical experience that took me back in time. The street is gorgeous, the home is impeccable and the service is outstanding. They took great pains to accommodate my dietary needs. We strolled around the neighborhood before and after... More

I spent a long time travelling around Japan and no where came close to Tomoko-san's Ryokan. After taking a long bus journey and bullet train from Fuji-san to Kyoto, Tomoko-san greeted my boyfriend and I with freshly made juice and took our bags. We had arrived before our room was ready so we went and visited the Gion area on... More

My husband enjoyed our best anniversary ever at Shiraume. The dinner and breakfast were both outstanding. Tomoko-san helped create the perfect experience for us. She had great recommendations for us about where to go when not at the ryokan. Go wherever she recommends! We stayed in the Umekoyomi room. The bath in the room was great and the Japanese bath... It is hard to fault this little gem of a ryokan as it's pretty much perfect in many ways. From the service, to the food, to the little things they do for you. I loved their futons so much, when I came home to Malaysia I went online in search of importing futons home (this never once occurred to me... More

I have been to Japan for 10 plus times, and this is by far the best hotel I have stayed at in Japan. When it comes to service, it is the best in the world. First of all, this is a ryokan and only has 6 rooms as it is built from two old houses. So one can't expect it... More

I'm Japanese but I write review in English so that foreigners can also read. You can enjoy all of the Japanese traditional culture in Shiraume. They offer superb Japanese cuisines, Japanese flower arrangement, calligraphy, art of ceramics and lacquer works, traditional architecture, relaxing sounds of river, garden, etc. It's almost like a Japanese culture museum. What's more, you can enjoy... More

Excellent cuisine (the best and most beautiful meals we have had in Kyoto) and hospitality and friendliness and amenities and ambiance and the scent of the tatami-rooms, which inspired me to make this haiku: "tatamis' yellow a guest embalmed by straw scent rests at Shiraume's". A bit less than excellent we found its location. All night long the noise of... More

My sister and I stayed here for one night after reading reviews here on Trip Advisor. What an incredible experience we had. From the moment we stepped through the purple fabric at the entrance, we knew we were in for something special. We arrived early and were offered a cool drink and a sit down, check in was in a... This is one of the most expensive stay we have tried and it does live up to the expectation. Food was great, room was perfect with the private tub, tatami mats and awesome views. Some things that we were disappointed with, everything is about money here even if you have paid for the room, we wanted to ask for a... More

Worth every penny! Tomoko San is just a very special lady and Shiraume is a very special place. I won't leave a long review because I think most people cover the sentiment here you can't put a place like this into words, it's simply out of a dream. You won't be disappointed and its a must to have the Kaiseki... More
