Staying here one night made for one of my most memorable travel experiences to date! Tomoko and her team are to be commended for the impeccable service they provide, ensuring you are always beyond comfortable. The meals are also outstanding, with the quality equalling some fine dining restaurants. We stayed in the Umekoyomi room, as we wanted a private bathroom.... More

We stayed here in late August, and the lovely Tomoko and her team looked after us so well. I am always hesitant to recommend a place like this, for fear of wanting to return and finding it booked out ! The food, wine list (plenty of French Burgundy !) and general ambiance was fantastic. A must for us to return... More

There is flawless, very professional and yet also warm, helpful and problem-solving service from Tomako and the rest of the team at Shiraume. Bed is very comfortable, rooms extremely peaceful giving you the feeling of home and food is carefully prepared. Location could not be better. A highlight of Kyoto.

Every attention to detail was evident as soon as we arrived. From the moment we got there to when we had to leave we felt as pampered as any guest could be. Everything was done with such a lovely touch. Tomoko and her staff provided exceptional service and warm hospitality. It was the highlight of our trip.

Much praise has been written here and elsewhere about Shiraume, and absolutely rightly so! We stayed for four days, and although having travelled far and wide in the world, we can say that this was probably the one top hotel experience ever. As others have pointed out, you enter an other realm once you cross the little bridge over the... More

Other reviewers have covered the details of this magical ryokan extensively, but I feel moved to add my superlatives to the conversation. Every aspectl of this place is a work of art: the rooms, the gardens, the setting on a beautiful willow-lined lane along a stream and of course, the food! My daughter and I had the sushi dinner, exquisite... More

Shiraume is lovely! The rooms are exquisite and there are an amount of ammenities offered (face mask, japanese socks, body scrub, all inclusive minibar with beer, tea, soft drinks, sweets, etc) and even happy hour with free drinks in the afternoon. The premises are also beautifull all over. Tomako (and the other staff) is a wonderfull host. She provided non... More

This beautiful ryokan is perfectly located at Shinbashi Dori, Kyoto’s most beautiful street. Everything is done perfectly from the service to the décor to the food. We will surely come back to this ryokan next time we visit Kyoto again.

All the reviews are true BUT, you really have to go and experience it yourself to really comprehend what a true gem this place is..Its one of those special once-in-a life times(and hopefully more) experiences-and all made possible by the most gracious and beautiful proprietor Ms. Tomoko and her charming assistants..My best friend and I celebrated a special b-day by... Superb street and location in Gion old town. Wonderful host in Tomoko Okuda. Beautiful house and rooms, complete with jacuzzi onsen bath. Kaiseki dinner was top class, as was Kobe beef dinner. We had dining room to ourselves, sitting at the bar overlooking the stream. For a special treat and to properly experience Ryokan hospitality, cannot go past Shiraume.

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
