Staying at this beautiful ryokan was the highlight of our trip to Japan. It is located in Kyoto's most picturesque street - some guidebooks say the loveliest street in all Asia - accessed by a little stone bridge across a crystal clear stream. From the moment we arrived we knew it was a special experience. The ryokan is a a... More

Wanted to stay at Shiraume to give my 13 year old grandson an experience in a Ryokan. Could not have picked a better place to stay. We were fortunate to be given an upgrade. It is a relatively small Ryokan in a very pretty old part of a Gion. The meals are out of this world. This is a must... More

We spent 4 amazing days , it was like heaven. We had chosen Umesono room so we had plenty of space, the nice view to the river and had our breakfast in our room, In the room we found plenty of amenities, the relaxing yukatas to wear and a very nice bathroom even if we could use the common hot... I'm a quasi-budge traveler. My wife, 5 year old daughter, and I stayed 5 nights in Tokyo for less than $900. So for us, Shiraume was a splurge. But I've got to say that it was worth the money. I stayed only one night, and it was the pinnacle of my two week stay in Japan. Given the cost, I... More

We stayed in the Umeichirin room for just one night and had a wonderful time. It was one of our favorite experiences of our honeymoon. The futon was very comfortable and we enjoyed getting a small taste of traditional Japanese culture. My husband had the kaiseki meal and I had the kobe beef meal. Both were excellent and we appreciated... More

Stayed in the Umezono room with 2 of my sisters and I must say I was absolutely impressed. Our room was on the second floor and comprised of a living room, bed room and separate toilet/powder room. Tomoko-san gave us attentive service that ranges from listening to our queries, answering them and also giving us advice as to where to... More

This is a small ryokan run by Tomokosan, the third generation to run the premises as a ryokan and the 7th to own the premises, which started as a tea house 150 years ago. Hospitality clearly runs in her blood as it would be well nigh impossible to find fault with the service, the food, the atmosphere and charm of... More

Staying here was an incredible exprrience. The ryokan itself is stunning, the service was excellent and the room was immaculate. Tomoko was incredibly welcoming and gave us all the information we needed about sights to see and how to get around. And the dinner was incredible! If you stay here, definitely opt for the kaiseke dinner option. Tomoko was also... More

None of the standard travel reference books mentioned Shiraume, but based on Trip Advisor ratings, we booked two nights here. We are here to say that Trip Advisor nailed it. The accommodations, the service, the food, the pampering, the location -- all of it, Shiraume gets it right. And not just right, but right with five stars. Shiraume is located... More
