Beautiful lobby and restaurants, with gardens outside large windows. Very helpful and pleasant staff. Convenient to the grounds of the Imperial Palace across the street. Room rate was very good for Kyoto in July. Location was a bit far removed from the Gion ($15 US cab ride each way) and other interesting restaurant areas like Pontochoco. "Small double room" that... This hotel is conveniently located - right next to one of the gates to the Go-sho (Imperial Palace) with good bus links to the path of philosophy, the golden pavilion and other sites. It is also near to two subway stations. The service, however, is average and the food - particularly the dinner - is overpriced. For some inexplicable reason,... More

We spent two nights in a double room. We arrived a bit late in the afternoon and unfortunately there were no more rooms available with a view on the royal palace park, which is just in front of the hotel. The room was ok and quite comfortable. The location was ok for us, although you indeed have to walk a... More

The Garden Palace hotel is a fairly typical Japanese hotel overall - that is, it is very clean, generally well maintained, efficient, and comfortable, with small rooms. On the latter, if you stay in NYC you know that those are small hotel rooms, so this is no different. The room had a mini fridge, a tea maker/kettle, and free wifi... More

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times and I have always found it very welcoming, with good service and good selection for breakfast. Rooms are not spacious, but they are provided with the usual amenities, including shoe brush, yukata, generous provision of towels. There is still no Wi-fi, except in a small area in the lobby, and... More

A nice hotel, opposite the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. Friendly hotel. Not a great selection of food in the restaurant, although breakfast was nice. Rooms were clean, but beds very small. Free wifi in the hotel.

My guidebook listed this hotel as in central Kyoto – true. The main problem is that there is not much to see or do in central Kyoto. It is directly opposite the Imperial Palace and gardens, but frankly, I have seen much better gardens than these (try Takamatsu) and the palace is not highly recommended as place to visit. It's... Although it is in central Kyoto and far from the southern and northern attractions, it is right across from the Imperial Palace and the rooms are reasonable size (although with some street noise). Would stay again.

Great location across street from Imperial Palace in Kyoto, and walking distance to two different subway stops, not hard to get to the hotel from Kyoto Station (main train station). Hotel rooms are about average sized for large cities in Japan and therefore small (ours was about 18 square meters). Very clean, nice bathrooms. Quiet. Bed mattresses are quite hard,... More

Stayed here for three nights in Kyoto for some sightseeing, after coming from a traditional Japanese ryokan near Kyoto Station beforehand. Rooms were very...average. Nothing to write home about. Rooms were small and plain, but at least clean. Hotel is located right next to the Imperial Palace grounds, but that's about all it's near. Located in the middle of the... More
