This is our fifth, and worst, five-star hotel that we stayed at in our five-city China trip. No doubt, the grounds of the hotel are the most beautiful and best maintained, and the location couldn't be better with a prime view of the beautiful west lake. This state-run former Mao resident turned hotel, however, has an unhelpful and unfriendly staff... More

It was the best place we stayed at all trip! The grounds are stunning. It's a great example of a high end Chinese hotel. Different types of rooms are housed in different buildings and the buildings spread across the grounds. We got up early to walk the grounds and caught the sunrise coming up over the Leifeng Pagoda! The location... More

Don't get me wrong..... I consider Hangzhou to be safe city...but whee else can a tourist stay in Hangzhou where they have armed Chinese guard protecting you. I chose to stay at the Xihu State Guest house primarily for the historic nature of the place...it supposedly was Mao's favorite retreat.... And the location right on the West Lake is perhaps... You won’t be regretful after living in Xihu State Guesthouse for a night. The surrounding of the hotel is absolutely beautiful since it’s near West Lake. My husband and I ordered a lake view room. I have enjoyed appreciating West Lake in a quiet environment instead of in a crowded one. The safe guard is supreme since there are armed... More

I stayed at the room in building 6. I think it is the worst location in this hotel. I asked the better view but the receptionist said no rooms are available. This hotel has nice Garden. But if you can't enjoy the garden or lake view in your room, it is not worth to pay for pricey room. Room was... More

Serenity. That's what this guesthouse (not your backpacker's hangout, mind you. The State guesthouses in China cater to top Party members, including premieres and chairmans) offers you in one of the most popular and crowded sights in the world - West Lake, Hangzhou. Its grounds used to be the luxury villa of a wealthy merchant in feudal China. The grounds... More

For anyone that knows the rigors of travel in China, I was stunned to have found peace and quiet at this lovely hotel. While the rooms and common areas are certainly not to the level of the Four Seasons or other high-end luxury properties, they are comfortable and the grounds make up for any deficiencies. The hotel is located directly... More

This is a good luxury hotel, somewhat below the level of a 4 Seasons, but also less expensive. The main draw for me are the jaw-droppingly stunning grounds and the quiet. Like many tourist destinations in China, West Lake is crowded and has terrible traffic. This hotel is an oasis of quiet and peace and I loved it. The rooms... More

Heard so much from the locals about this place so I checked out early from the Hyatt to see for myself. This place used to host Party (yes, capital P) officials and the Chairman himself was rumored to have stayed at Guesthouse 12. Don't think it's open to the public though. I stayed at Guesthouse 8. The room is clean... More

This hotel's location at West Lake trumps all the surrounding hotels, such as InterContinental and the 4 Seasons. Why? Because this hotel has the exclusive spot at West Lake. Walking into the building where the restaurant is located, you can see many pictures from all the Chinese President who have visited this hotel from Mao Ze Dong to Hu Jing... More
