More than a luxury boutique hotel, the new member of Relais & Châteaux family is also a listed building steeped in history. Created on the remnants of Shikumen villas, typical local residences in the 1930s, Chaptel Hangzhou is an architectural gem. The time-honored compound mirrors China in the past, and also leads the fashion today. The traditional Chinese wooden furniture with Art Deco ornaments show us the charm of classicism, the independent balcony and terrace in each villa open an access to the naturalism, and the incomparable hotel service brings us an enjoyment of humanism. The taste of Chaptel lies not only in its culture and history, but also the divine dishes. Xike Hall serves the authentic western food, traditional local delicacies and classic British afternoon tea. It is a great feast for tongue. Located near the picturesque West Lake and the city center, Chaptel Hangzhou is absolutely a good choice for both business and leisure purposes.

I booked a lake tour for my boss and one of our important clients with the hotel. The cost is 2566 RMB for 120 minutes since we customized the tour. The result is not ideal since the hotel told us this tour would be a breakfast in the boat while they did not provide enough amount of food. I contacted the hotel and so far there is no proper response or formal apologize received.

A historic hotel. The location is quiet close to the West Lake, no more than five minutes walk. The beds are very comfortable, the toothbrush works well, and the restaurant is pretty good too. Breakfast is lacking options. The front desk staff and butler are quiet friendly, others not so much.

During my first trip to Hangzhou years ago with my wife, we walked past this intriguing hotel while visiting West Lake, and my wife vowed to try a stay there when we return to Hangzhou. So this time, with two teenage children in tow, the four of us spent one night at Chaptel. The setting is definitely charming. Old row houses next to West Lake remodelled to become a small hotel with few rooms in art deco style. The management tried to give a full experience, from the decor of the room to the type of soap used in bathrooms. Just looking at the design was a delight. But a few glitches here and there: - The bathroom was very odd. A large shower stall with barely any partitioning and an old style bathtub. But water ran everywhere and there was no place/table to put towels and clothes. Just very bizarre. - Breakfast was rather limited and service was not up to par. We arrived late (it was a Sunday, so we slept in) and there was no other guest, just a few staff who were obviously eager to wrap up and clean out the place. I couldn’t help feeling I was intruding into their break or something. Food was not refilled and we just quickly took a bite of some bread and a sip of some juice and left. - The small reception area was... small. Actually cramped would be a better description. We had to store our luggage after check out and before departing for airport, and they kindly offered to do so in the already very small reception/office. I thought such simple frequent requests should probably have some more appropriate solutions. All in all, if you want to do away with big chain hotels and try something quaint and unique, this is the place for you. But be prepared as it is small and is not as professionally managed.

Amazing hotel but the concept may be too pioneering in China. A chic and hip hotel which is refurnished from some real historical buildings, some old mansions back in the 1920s. Only 10 to 20 rooms, most of them are individual buildings. Right next to the hotel is a real local Chinese neighborhood. The neighborhood and the hotel are opened to the public during day time. Local people or tourists physically walk through there. Rooms actually have tenser-barrier installed right in front of their yards or gardens, preventing passer-bys walking too close to the rooms. Although all of the above, the rooms are very beautiful. With the antique style and ambient space but all the equipment in the room is new and efficient. Service is nice because the ratio of staff to room is high. Only one restaurant but the breakfast serving there is wonderful. The location is very close to West Lake and a bunch of nice restaurants.

I would probably grade this 3.5* but Tripadvisor does not only allow 0.5*. I get what some of the reviewers were saying - the hardware is great - superb location just 2 minutes away from the West Lake and 10minutes walk to restaurants, shopping malls etc, a cosy boutique hotel of just 17 rooms and a great dining room. We had the duplex suite - which was a luxurious, spacious villa spanning 2 floors. The ground floor was the living area - flat screen TV, couch, dining table with the bedroom upstairs. All the usual trappings of a 5* hotel was present - a mini bar (which was complimentary - and a very nice touch), coffee/tea maker. The bed was very comfortable and airconditioning was divine given we visited Hangzhou in the middle of a scorching summer. The bathroom had a standalone bath and a rain shower/shower cubicle and lots of room to hang towels. But there was no sink, and one had to go to the toilet / makeup room if one needed to wash hands. So - 1* was removed because I felt that the service did not match up to that of a Relais and Chateux property (or any 5* international branded hotel for that matter). It was professional, and many of the staff were earnest, but they were limited, and one could not help feeling that this property served as a training ground for them to be posted elsewhere when they had learnt enough. E.g over 4 days, the housekeeping was inconsistent - we returned one day to find the cups unwashed from the day before and the fruit plates not cleared , on another occasion, the toiletries were not refilled. The dustbins were cleared on 2 nights out of 4 (during turndown service). We did not complain as these were minor issues - but for the price one pays, as well as the service they tout - we felt they fell short of what we expected. Breakfast was another mixed bag. The staff were helpful and tried - but their training was sub par and some staff were clearly still learning the ropes but thrown into the deep end. Some food was not topped up and drinks were not offered till we asked. On our last 2 days, a Swede (whom I forget his name, sorry!!!) came by to help in the dining room and his professional service, hospitality surpassed everything that was offered prior to those days. I read that some reviewers had mentioned that the front desk was very helpful - again - this was a mixed bag. The manager and head was excellent, full of great ideas and proactive, but the lady whom checked us in was reticent and gave the vibes she did not know much about the property and its surroundings when we asked for dinner recommendations. Eventually she recommended a place called "Grandma's Kitchen" which we already knew about but when we asked for directions to the nearest outlet, all she could muster was to walk to the main road "Dongpo Road" and then 'ask people on the street'. Hardly the best introduction to Hangzhou. To be fair, things improved after that. Lastly, I took away 0.5* for the fact that most of the staff could barely understand a word of English, much less speak English. I am bilingual and so did not really matter too much - but if you do NOT speak mandarin, I will suggest - try another property. For an internationally rated 5* hotel in a first tier Chinese city - I would expect that at least 50% of the staff should have conversational English

Hangzhou is renowed for 3 achievements: its prosperity, the beautiful West Lake and housing the HQ of Alibaba. After 2 nights at the Chaptel, I am confident this is Hangzhou's 4th achievement. This splendid hotel not only exudes so much charm, it successfully created a space that is a fusion of modern and vintage living. Of course, my personal thoughts might not be sufficient. I typically travel alone but this time, I brought my folks along, and they have extremely high standards when it comes to settling down on a hotel of their liking. Thankfully, Chaptel was able to provide them with an amazing experience coupled with top-notch service. I quote my dad: "This is the most luxurious hotel I've ever stayed in so far throughout all my travels." Unless the typical hotels, that is at least 10 stories tall with well-known International Brands attached to it, Chaptel is a cosy and classic boutique hotel where you can feel at home and fully relax and recharge. As there's 3 of us. We stayed in 2 separate villas of the same style. Our villa spans 3 stories. When we first entered the villa, the staff took some time to explain the various amenities available. Given the size, it took quite a while. :) The first level consists of the living room that is filled with beautifully designed antique furniture. It is huge and can easily fit 5 guests if you have any. And yes, they know how to make us smile with a simple yet important gesture: The mini-bar is complimentary unlike most hotels where you have to pay. The 2nd level is where the bedroom as well as the bathroom is. Yes, you do get a bathtub that is useful during the winter. You can also choose from the refreshing rain-shower option. The bedroom has a 4-poster kingsize bed. Bedsheets are extremely soft. I'm pretty sure the thread-count is darn high. I slept like a baby. There is also a small balcony on the 2nd level allowing you to get some gaze into the night or get some fresh air if needed. The hotel is also thoughtful to provide bottled water in various rooms to ensure guests do not have to travel to far to quench our thirst. Finally, the 3rd level is a private, spacious open-air concept that is great for sunbathing in the summer. The chaptel is around 40 mins via taxi to the hotel and 3-min walk to West Lake. My parents managed to catch the sunset while i was taking a nap on the cosy sheets. My package includes complimentary breakfast that is served by highly attentive staff and you get a choice between a Chinese or Western breakfast. We had the opportunity to have dinner at Chaptel's restaurant. Dinner was fine-dining style together with lighted candles and cream butter. I tried the tasting menu which includes Cod Fish and Steak. Wiped out the entire plate and washed it down with raspberry sorbet for dessert. When it was time to leave, my parents and I were reluctant as we haven't had such a wholesome, luxurious and downright amazing experience with a hotel so far. Whatever I have described here doesn't do justice to what I have enjoyed. This is beyond words. I can't wait to go back to Hangzhou just for this. If you want to find a place called Home in Hangzhou, look no further than Chaptel.

After working in Shanghai we caught the high speed train to Hangzhou. Excellent hotel, great location, fabulous food. We had a deluxe suite and which was on the second floor, so if you can't climb stairs, opt for a different room. The woodwork is gorgeous.

This is a lovely hotel in the perfect location. It is truly an oasis that we looked forward to returning to at the end of the day. The reason that I can't give it an excellent rating is the language barrier. I am not a traveler who expects the rest of the world to speak my language but the hotel advertises that a number of languages are spoken an that personal tours can be arranged. Neither is accurate. After communicating by sign language and pointing at pamphlets we were able to make ourselves understood that we would like to book a tour. The solution offered was taxi with a Mandarin speaking driver. We consulted TripAdvisor and booked Taylor-Made on our own and it was perfect. The hotel itself is beautiful and the staff very pleasant but unless you speak Mandarin communication is extremely difficult.

Even as a Hangzhou native (I grew up in Hangzhou but left for the in late 80s), Chaptel is by so far the best hotel I stayed in Hangzhou (I Have stayed in Shangri-la, Four Seasons, Sofitel, Hyatt, West Lake Dongzhuang, West Lake State ...). Detailed attentions are paid to the architectural styles back in 1930s when traditional Chinese design began to merge with and modern West concept to present visual elegance and spiritual tranquility. The inside - shows another level of details - the furniture, amenities, showers, which pales the same in Four Seasons or Sofitel. Service - well trained, polite, and customer oriented. Food - close to Michelin level preparation and presentation. Location - walking distance to West Lake in the middle of everything but still extremely quite. anIf you want to find a piece of culture oasis among fast changing West Lake area in Hangzhou, have a sip of history of luxury and peace, but still easily gain assess to pretty much everything and everywhere, here it is - the Chaptel. If you like to have a super experience in Hangzhou, a piece of history, a serene stay in the middle of West Lake Area, do not miss it. Enjoy!

Dear Dr Zhu, firstly, I would like to express our kindly gratitude for your truthfully comment and recognition. From the comment, we could see your professionalism and erudition. One of famous Chinese poets Bai Juyi had wrote a poem to express his affection and addiction to Hangzhou. “江南忆 最忆是杭州” means that the most expressive and memorable place is Hangzhou among the places that Bai had been travelled. Hangzhou as a popular city of travel and now has been well-known internationally regarding his unique culture since the G20 Summit Meeting. Hangzhou as your hometown, undoubtedly you will have special feeling to this lovely and beautiful place when comparing with other cities. Thus, welcome back to Hangzhou more often if you are available! Nowadays, Hangzhou’s hotel industry development is flourishing and more diverse. Relais & Chateaux Chaptel Hangzhou Hotel consists of a historical architectural complex, Yin Lu Garden Villa and Qi Wang Lu 16 Road Villa. All belong to the buildings in 19th century. The architectural complex is Shikumen style building group which also is a living example showing the recent evolution of architecture. Yin Lu Garden Villa is a demonstration of fusion of Chinese and Western building features. Qi Wang Lu 16 Road Villa has high wall courtyard and is a signature architecture during the period of Republic of China. Chaptel Hangzhou recognizes its own uniqueness and merges with modern living concept to actualize the coexistence between tradition and fashion. Hotel cautiously add multi-functional room, gym room, lounge, wine cellar etc. in response to its own characteristics and architecture Chaptel Hangzhou not only manifests the mixed culture between Chinese and Western, but also modern people’s quality of living and fashion ideas. As a member hotel under Relais & Chateaux brand, we obey to Relais & Chateaux’s guiding ideology—bijou, quiet but not being sparsely populated. The in-room design is simple and unsophisticated with expressing the feature in the period of Republic of China. Supplies that we selected all belongs to high specification, for example, the Manchurian ash original wooden furniture, delicate hand-made glass, famous English brand Perrin Rowe and Moltown Brown for the bath and wash supplies respectively. Just like what you have mentioned that Chaptel Hangzhou has applied the concept of fusion between Chinese and Western in most of the stuff and also its favorable location which is near the West Lake where only is 150 meters far away from the Chaptel Hotel. We deeply believe that a lovely house could let you be addicted to a city. Once more, we would like to thank for the sharing of your hotel stay with us and we will continue work hardly to provide a wonderful and unforgettable hotel staying experience for every treasurable guests. Thanks you so much and all the best!

As one of the Relais&Chateaux properties in China, the hotel itself is a piece of history of modern 'China'( not to be confused with PRC) dated back to 1930s. The buildings were beautifully maintained to a high standard and all amenities were of high end quality. We had stayed a couple of nights in one of the terraced two-bedroom houses with the perfume given off by the Osmanthus blossoms right at the door step and the beautiful sight of West Lake only a few minutes walk away. The quaint and quiet hotel gives a sharp contrast between the crowded tourists sites and itself. Staff were more than friendly, gave us a tour of the property and answered all our need during the stay, albeit left a lot of privacy to you not to be disturbed. The service were personal and attentive, nightly rose bath were very appreciated together with the scrumptious A la Carte brunch included in the room rate. For a family of three of four, I can not recommend any other properties in the vicinity that give the historical trait, comfort and privacy than Chaptel. Would love to visit again.
