From March 25 through 28, I stayed at the Kai Wah Plaza, Kunming. Hotel is clean and room was comfortable but could use updating. Expect limited closet and drawer space for clothing and the laundry service is excellent. The Internet access is extremely sluggish and intermittent. The hotel seems to be geared for tourists rather than business travelers. Business center is adequate, but a bit pricey for copies or fax requests. Bar area is smoke filled and expect constant cigarette smoke in the hallways as guests leave their room doors open and smoke quite heavily. Restaurant was very good with an attempt to focus on many different ethnicities. Staff speaks limited English, but every attempt is made to satisfy your requests. Steer clear of executive level, if this is not included in your room price, you can expect to pay 100 RMB for a beer. While this is considered a five star hotel, this traveler rates it a 3.5.
