Was staying at Dongfang Hotel for a week in month of April as I was attending a medical conference in the same hotel - the room was booked by the conference organisers. First impression - the bellboy was all ready to take my luggage - that's already first plus point. Followed by great service from the front desk - the... more

This 5-star hotel boasts palatial grandeur that defies description. The rooms are clean and spacious; the breakfast buffet offers Western, Chinese and Japanese cuisine. The size of the grounds is massive. Shopping and access to all classes of restaurants is extensive. Taxi transportation to all sightseeing is cheap. more

I stayed at the Dong Fang a week for Canton Fair. The hotel is huge, as the it was all booked I have been upgraded to a room with kitchen an a separate living room. Everything was cleaned daily as supposed. The international restaurants are a little bit overpriced, but I ate there almost the whole week. Location is great,... more

We stayed in the Dong Fang hotel during the Canton Fair in October . I was worried after reading the reviews , but we had no problems at all. We found the front desk staff very friendly and helpfull , and there was always one on hand that could speak English. The front desk manager helped us get a taxi... more

Reading a previous review about the state ownership of the Hotel, I understand many of the problems. The hotel is overstaffed, but to no use, since communication is almost impossible with most of them. I booked a room with access to the "Executive Lounge" ($450 US, because of Canton fair), only to learn that all you get is breakfast (decent)... more

I liked the hotel. I liked the grounds. I liked the public area. I was there for a conference that normally uses only very good hotels, so I was confident that this would be a good hotel (and it is). I stayed on the executive floor, and the room was very pleasant. I could tell from the floorplan on the... more

Stayed at the Dong Fang Hotel in Guangzhou earlier during 2007 and to utter surprise, another reviewer has already left comments exactly mirroring the same terrible experiences. If you are a couple comprising of a foreigner with an Asian/Chinese partner, it seems she risks being seen and treated as a prostitute by staff at this 5 star hotel. Just as... more

The overall condition of the hotel is nice and I would consider the rooms average. I have been traveling and doing business in China for the past 12 years and have never experienced such negative service from the staff. I’m American and my wife is Chinese so we frequently travel together when I do business. We have had nothing but... more

Just returned from the Canton Fair and a 3 night stay on the 7th floor of block 1. I had an executive business room which looked out over the pool/gardens. My room was modern, clean and inviting. Yes the bed was quite firm and some of the furnishing had a few scratches but I found the location to the Liuhua... more

For Westerners they may not understand the difference of state-run business (possibly with excess capital to loose) and an enterprised non-bureaucratic small or franchised company. To worry about the service standard or soothing reply to your heart-broken complaint, please stay away from this hotel. As this has been state run hotel for more than 30 years and the staff culture... more
