Terrible welcome: room not ready, took away passport (for 2 hours for registration, they said!) and wouldn't give it back until we made a fuss, waiter was rude (we were waiting for a table, he came and asked how he can help us, I said we would like to have lunch, and he replied "Who's not letting you?" !!) ...... more

I agree with most reviewers. Hotel was clean, rooms were fine but nothing special. Lobby unattractive, food unexciting, just adequate. It is not centrally located. Beyond not being centrally located, traffic jams make it impossible to breeze in and out from the city center. Metro is a possible solution, however, for those without wheels. I am a travel agent and went on a self organised educational to Russia. The Andersen Hotel was offered to me via a local tour operator in Cape Town who in turn booked it through Intourist. The hotel was clean, no problem there but whoever designed that hotel did so without any imagination. The lobby is rather drab and unwelcoming.... more

When planning our trip to St. Petersburg, I went through the reviews of travellers on this website about St. Petersburg hotels. What struck me, was, that nearly all the big medium class hotels from former Soviet era got terrible reviews concerning staff attitudes and service. We stayed 4 nights and were very pleased with the helpful service provided by the reception staff. They gave us information on how much we should pay for taxis, telephone cards etc. The rooms/bathrooms were clean and well presented proving to be good value.
