The Hotel Sovietsky is an unreconstructed Soviet-era hotel that has made a virtue of the necessity that it hasn't been renovated since being built in 1951. Frankly, it's a lot of fun. The rooms are enormous (and reasonably comfortable) and though the breakfast is of mediocre quality it is accompanied by live piano or harp playing (they had a pianist... More

You have the choice of going to a good hotel in Moscow, yet this one brings back the old Soviet feel. Rooms and the hotel reception are decorated in this way. Fascinating woodwork and staircase. Ignore the old rooms and experience the Soviet charm!

Anyone can stay at one of the newer cookie cutter hotels, but this old hotel takes you right back to Soviet times. The woodwork is beautiful, fantastic grand staircase. Sure the rooms are old, but this place has plenty of old school charm. Red Square is a healthy walk but very doable. Stay her at least one night.

It was awhile ago when we visited this hotel. The experience going to it was not great as we got ripped off by the taxi driver, but once here it was an eye opener. The front desk was friendly and we had no problems checking in and getting the room. The first thing you notice about this hotel is how... More

This is one of the hotels in Moscow I have stayed at occasionally over the last ten years of business trips. At the beginning you put up with the antiquated rooms because service was good and breakfast was good. But now the service and breakfast have fallen off a cliff. Location in no way lends any favours. A shame. Does... More

The style of the hotel and the live classical music over breakfast was about the only redeeming feature. Staff surely. On checkout not even a 'thank you' just 'ok' and they did speak English. Too near the main roads. Not much in the immediate area in terms of restaurants of bars or coffee shops. Tube type TV where the only... More

The Historic Hotel Sovietsky was fabulous, exactly what we wanted – an imposing Stalinist structure steeped in history of the USSR. It would have been so easy to have booked into a modern hotel with all the services one has come to expect – but do have done so would have meant we missed a priceless opportunity to step back... The hotel is nice in appearance but in a lackluster neighborhood. Restaurant and included breakfast were good; front desk staff was helpful but not too pleasant. Don't take a room without air conditioning in late May--it was hot and stuffy. And the a/c in the room we moved to did not work right, even after a technician came up and... More

The stunning parts are the humongous marble staircase, the details in the corners, and the weight of history in this relic from the Soviet era. There are marble columns in the lobby, red carpet runners with intricate soviet-era designs throughout the hallways, and truly remarkable ceiling decor everywhere you look. The stuffy part, at least when I was there, was... More

Stayed one week for business and tourism and had a great time. Hotel is communist fancy style with Stalin picture, great halls and huge rooms. Two blocks from Dinamo metro station makes it easier to go around. Magnificent breakfast.
