This is a wonderful hotel, gorgeously done up and taken care of, great food and drink. Lovely staff and decoration, the rooms are perfect and the food is delicious and you can have it it in a charming brick courtyard outside right on the river! Highly recommended!

I was just looking for a low key place to stay while in the area on business, but left blown away by the beauty of the hotel and its warm staff! My room looked out to the Hudson river, which was gorgeous, especially after it rained. Everything seemed well placed, like there was real thought when decorating this "boutique hotel".... More

The Stewart House has a charm that feels like home. Relaxed and shabby chic. The food is reasonable and uneffected. It's a smart mix, tangible to any easy going palate. The staff is welcoming and helpful. You can make yourself at home. The outdoor bar is full of whimsy. The rooms are simple, clean, bright and have nice tubs. I... More

The Stewart house is located in out of the way, run down Athens on the Hudson. An uneven attempt has been made for the hotel to appear upscale. Expensive linens are mixed with tired furniture and Ikea accessories. The hostess was pretentious, disorganized, well meaning and totally inept. She was incapable of laying out croissants and granola for more than... More

We cannot agree with the reviewer’s derisive comments about Athens "as a run down, out of the way” town. In fact, the overwhelming majority of our guests see it as we see it, a proud jewel of a Victorian town, on the banks of the Hudson River, directly across from the City of Hudson. This is why we urge any... More

What a charming place! The inn is beautiful and rustic but has new amenities and appliances. Our room was all white, windows overlooking the Hudson, with an update bathroom featuring a deep tub for soaking. It really is the perfect mix of old charm but with hot water, great pressure/shower heads and tubs! The breakfast was simple and delicious -... More

We arrived after dark, but after entering the SH we knew we were somewhere very special! The attention to detail in the decor and keeping the original bones of the old Inn was truly incredible. After a long work week we were so happy to arrive in our beautiful room with a very comfortable bed. The huge bathtub and gorgeous... More

The Stewart House has a Garden Cafe on the Hudson River. We went on a Saturday evening. We were going to share a Spinach salad - but they were out of Spinach! So, I could not order the Garden Chicken over baby spinach either - a disappointment, but I settled for a burger instead. Hubby went with Fish & Chips.... More

Cozy, light, handcrafted beauty, clean, ethereal. I loved staying at The Stewart House! The staff was helpful and cheerful. You really feel like your in another era. The detail in the linens and decor are delicate, stately and interesting to look at. Its minimal yet warm and historic with no pretention. I woke up to warm croissants and coffee. Its... More

Went for a weekend getaway from New York City, expecting to find a charming down-to-earth inn, unpretentious but romantic. - Confusion over reservation when we arrived (we ended up staying in a different room from the one I reserved, manager refused to acknowledge mix up). No problem as room was quite nice. - Room is nicely appointed and spacious but... More

We are very sorry that you felt this way. If I recall correctly, we had an unscheduled repair to perform in the room that you had booked, and I did call and advise you of that prior to your arrival. Since your stay, we have upgraded out toiletries, and only use an all-organic brand. Our design-team chose the ruffled shower... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Stewart House at THE ATHENS HOTEL, one of the grandest hotel/restaurants in the Hudson River Valley, is located in the river town of Athens, NY. (Directly across from Hudson, New York.) Carrying on a legacy that began in the 1883 when it first opened its doors, the Athens Hotel acts as the perfect companion to the Shakespeare on the Hudson Estates (located 2 miles from the hotel), featuring the 11-room "River House", and the 11-room "River Lodge"; located on 90 acres of Hudson River river-front. The hotel itself is able to accommodate up to 18 guests. This architectural treasure has had a complete renovation after being damaged by floodwaters during Tropical Storm Irene during the summer of 2011. Owen Lipstein, the owner of the Stewart House at THE ATHENS HOTEL, has presided over this nuanced, imaginative and critically acclaimed restoration, literally from the inside out. The nine spacious and fully complete guest rooms pay appropriate respect to the Stewart House's historically important past. At the same time, it now features state of the art , heating, cooling and electric. The bathrooms are remarkable, featuring for example, marble tile showers, custom baths and heated towel warmers. These rooms have been carefully been styled for the ultimate getaway boasting large and airy suites, perfect for snuggling up and enjoying the view of the Hudson River. With it respect to its historic sense of place, we can now embrace the glorious present, with a wondrous future.... Re-opened just recently, both the restaurant and hotel have garnered nothing short of rave reviews. As one recent guest put it, "Simply stated, this is the most beautiful place on the Hudson. Stay here, eat here, indulge in a drink at the River Garden, and you will never want to leave." The restaurant has also JUST OPENED. (We have been careful about announcing it.) We can now say this with quiet, but assured confidence: customers from near and far, have left extremely satisfied, happy, and full of praise for our chef and our staff. Each room at THE ATHENS HOTEL is as unique as the hotel's history: some rooms are named after movie productions that have used the hotel as a backdrop, some are named after the surrounding landscape, and still others are named after notable characters from Shakespeare's plays. Each room features spectacular views of the Hudson, luxurious queen-size beds, in-room mini fridges, large flatscreen TVs and brand new, state-of-the-art bath amenities. ... more   less
