Where to start? We had been told by some that penang, namely Georgetown, is not worth going to at all, and from others that it is great. We definitely agreed with the latter! We spent 3 nights at this guesthouse, with simple breakfast included. We stayed in a dorm the first night and a private room for the last two.... More

I've never given a hotel I've stayed at a poor review, but then again most of the ones deserving such are $10 a night in third world countries. My partner and I are paying over U.S. $30 a night for a private double en suite at Old Penang Guesthouse and while it does have potential, there's absolutely nothing that distinguishes... More

We stayed in a double with private bath. It was big but had no window, and the bathroom was decent. But we could smell a whif of the sewer at times, and breakfast is poor (packaged bread, margarine, and some fruit). Also, don't use them to book a bus ticket - we waited for a "shuttle" to the bus station... More

Hi, thanks for your review. We concerned about this matter and had feedback to the express bus agent. However, this express bus agent provide FREE shuttle service to bus station in Komtar and even Sg Nibong bus terminal. We do have other express bus agent but no free shuttle service provided, guest need to go to Sungai Nibong bus terminal... More

This place does look nice and all, lot of potential, but there's bed bugs ( at the time i went anyway they had bed bugs). I got stuck with them even after spraying and washing my stufff many times. I even saw one 3 months later when I got home. Just made me so angry! One of the guy there... More

We only stayed 2 nights in Georgetown and Old Penang was a dream after our KL hostel. Beds were comfortable and clean, the air con was good, bathrooms clean with quite powerful showers and the staff were really friendly. The breakfast was quite basic but fresh and nice. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends.

I'll start with the good points, the location is very good, in Chinatown but not on the busy main road and it was nice to stay in an old restored building however there are some sore points that are really letting the place down. Firstly the bathrooms are so smelly because the bins (which contain used toilet paper) are not... More

Stayed in a 12-person room - bed was comfy and clean but not much floor space making it difficult to rummage through your bag. Room very nice and cool but if your bed is near the AC unit, it's probably too cold. Breakfast options were simple but adequate. Front desk staff were helpful but not overly friendly. Location is good... More

I took a bed in the dormitory which has 6 double decks. They crammed these double decks into a much too small room. Can you image 12 backpackers with all their big bags strewn around? Talk about uncomfortable. And more unfortunately still, they placed me in the top bed. Note that they use creaky wooden beds, so by the time... More

This place was affordable, the service was good and is fantastically located. But there are bed bugs. My cousin and I stayed there for three nights in two different rooms. Two days after returning home, we both developed red itchy bumps ( clustered spots, on the back and thighs- typical of bed bug bites). Bed bug bites only show up... More

The staff are great, the rooms spotless, the bathrooms the cleanest I have seen in Asia! I really can't say enough good things about the Old Penang Guesthouse. Great location (especially with The Mugshot Cafe around the corner), good people, and terrific advice on things to see and do in town. Staying in George Town? Stay here.
