my friends and I stayed here just for a night.. and I can say that it's a great place to stay mostly for those seeking for a short escape away from the city's noise. We enjoyed everything that's in there.. especially the mini bar :-) Nice place, nice room, nice food, great views, great service and great staffs! Indeed.. it... More

This hotel, or slum, easily rate as the worst i have ever stayed in. It is filthy, run down, has no lounge or dining room, no wi-fi, no telephones, carpets are torn, toilet leaking, really, really a bad idea from our visa run driver to book us in there. My window could not close, so i had the Penang traffic... More

1.The hotel could use a facelift to attract more patrons (our family room was pleasantly HUGE). 2.The beddings were kind of dusty and the bed OLD but there were TWO extra pillows available in the cupboards :-) 3.The blurr tv channels consist of only TV1,TV2,TV3 n NTV7 (not in that order though). 4.The front desk staff were unfriendly at first... We ask for a private room. But, at three in the morning we had some visitors. A tiny and very friendly mouse was digging on the trash basket. That´s not any issue. 30 minutes after, I think it was his father, was looking for the little mouse. A 4 inches rat was eating our cookies from TV table and then... More

We stayed here for a day in a family room with a double bed and a single bed. The room was rather clean, with hot water and clean toilet. However the bathub was broken. There's a free shuttle bus stop just beside the hotel and a bus stop very near the hotel. There's a back entrance that leads to Cheong... More

Merchant Hotel is set strategically on Penang Rd., which is very near to almost everywhere that you would want to visit in Georgetown. Cheong Fatt Tze mansion which is one of the major attractions in Georgetown is just one road behind this hotel. Other heritage places of interest are mostly walking distance from the hotel as well (eg. the national... More

We've stayed at the Merchant a couple of times and thought it was pretty good value. But on our last visit, in 2007, $300 was stolen from our room. It was perfectly obvious that hotel staff did it. Several young men from the staff hang out by the elevator on the 3rd floor. Every time you take the elevator down,... More

The Merchant Hotel in Penang Road, Georgetown, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia gave us a very bad reception services. At first, we see the room no. 603 insisted by a female indian receptionist, the room is nice then suddenly a room servicer came and recommended us even more nicer room no. 605 and we like it. So we speak to a female... More

It is an old hotel, but do not be deterred by the old facade and out of date carpets. Its location is excellent ( just beside the free hop on-hop off bus service stop) and the service is great. It is old but the people there still take pride in their profession and respect their guests. I booked a room... More
