If you're looking for a quiet, clean hotel on Penang Island in the midst of Colonial Georgetown the Oriental is a good cheap bet.Very clean and quiet with just the basics.Local TV only and no control over the A/C,but a great view from the upper floors. We came to Penang by rail from Kuala Lumpur without having made a reservation, but with a... Great location -- near Komtar, the main local bus center and the site of a large shopping complex; on the edge of Chinatown; a 10-minute walk to Little India; a 15-minute walk to the Esplanade; on or near several Heritage Trails. Great staff -- friendly, helpful; knowledge of good, varied, low-to-medium cost restaurants nearby. Rooms -- a little dingy but... More

Stayed at the Oriental Hotel on Penang Road for a few nights. Very good location, near the heritage sites and the old business district. We could see alot of the real city from here....wonderful . The hotel is located at a very convenient junction...we asked for a room facing the port, and we wanted wireless access, and the staff was... More

We arrived in Penang quite late at night so were in a bit of a hurry to find something quickly as we were tired. This was the best of a bad bunch (we checked out at least 10 other hotels) and due to our backpackers budget we couldn't spend more than this place cost. The room was very spacious, and... More

Found this gem in the Rough Guide to Malyasia - wont be using that again! What a toilet, OK lets be fair it's cheap, but rough Guide have it as a Moderate cost Choice, moderate should at least mean half decent. This place was urrggh, dirty! The staff were not the happiest bunnies, the rooms are simply uncared for, wall... More

The Oriental is an older hotel seemingly with little or no maintenance since it opened. Still, the rooms are a good size, very clean and the staff very friendly and extraordinarily helpful. Free and very fast in-room WiFi on the higher floors. Try to get a room at the back as the front is quite noisy at night, and if... More

First off, the rates are cheap - so that has to be kept in mind. Nevertheless, the "slightly eerie" description is quite apt. Upon entering, I hoped that the glass front door smeared with grease would not be a harbinger of things to come. The check-in process was easy and quick. Upon exiting the elevator, the hallways were rather dark,... More

The place has a 1970 aura. Probably because nothing in the hotel has been remodelled since then. The room was spacious but well-worn. Clean, no odd odours and the shower had water pressure I've never experienced in SE Asia before. It could have knocked over a lighter person. The location is good and the staff very polite. For 75R per... More

The Oriental is a basic midrange hotel with a slightly eerie feel to it. The room was clean and spacious and the bathroom was adequate with a hot shower. There was air con and TV although the air con was a bit dated and the TV channels didn't seem to work. The hotel is on a main road but it... More
