Good location close to the Amber Mountain park; nicely refurbished French colonial mansion; very friendly and hospital family runs the place very efficiently; rooms are very spacious and in good condition. The food (breakfast and a set dinner meal are included) was great. We would have loved to stay longer.

I was here with a group. We had a great time staying here. We also had one of the best hikes while in Madagascar. Karl was super friendly and hospitable. He made us feel very comfortable. The food that was prepared for us was a pleasant surprise. There is also a cool Tortoise to see on the property. If you... More

I thoroughly enjoyed this hotel. I stayed here only one night on a birding tour in November but would have loved to stay longer. Nice gardens, playground for children who would have loved seeng the giant tortoise that has been there for about 100 years, if I recall right. The food was very good, the owner very concerned about our... More

This was one of my favorite stops on a 17 day tour of Madagascar. The hotel was really nice with a classic feel. The rooms were spacious and the dinner was excellent. The owner (who is a lot of fun to talk to) keeps amazing grounds filled with plants, flowers and lots of Orchids. There's also a massive, and super... More

This is a hidden treasure. The owner, Karl, has painstakingly restored this beautiful colonial structure. It's only 40 minutes from Diego. And should be on everyone traveler's itinerary. The highlight of the stay was a guided tour through the private, 350 hectare reserve on the hotel's property. In the span of 50 minutes, we saw several endemic species of chameleons... More

Le Domaine de Fontenay is a beautiful, rustic inn with character. Karl-Heinz and his wife own and operate this quaint guest house. They have lived here for over fifteen years and know everything about the area. Galileo, the very friendly 250 year old tortoise has quite the personality. The rooms are large and comfortable and the bathrooms are amazing. They... More

We stayed here for three nights on the strength of the private reserve with night walks. Sadly we were the only guests and the hotel is rather run down with a negative unhappy owner. We wish we had stayed at The Litchi Tree in the same town. Saying that the meals were very good, many ingredients from the garden, and... More

We received a really warm welcome on arrival from Karl-Heinz, who along with the rest of the staff, couldn't have been more accommodating throughout our 2 night stay. Nothing was a problem and the food was fabulous - Karl even asked if we'd be happy with the pork roast he was planning for our second evening meal. Our room was... More

Small hotel with separate large rooms/villas, great old German proprietor (and young wife), old turtle, and private access to a large area of the Amber mountain complete with wild animals, water fall, etc. Night trips into this private reserve are also available with capable guides who find animals you would be unlikely to spot on your own.

It was very easy to reserve our rooms and the trips (and whatever we wanted) in email with the host, Karl-Heinz, who speaks many languages (English, German, French, maybe Russian and Italian too). If you arrive with plane or boat, it's the easiest to ask Karl in advance to send a car with a driver for you, to make sure... More
