Booked here after a trek in the mountains East of Almaty, The beds seemed supremely comfortable after time camping in the mountains and we slept well. It's in a good spot if you are working your way around out as well. Staff were helpful and the place is not cheap but that is Kazakhstan. It;s worth staying one night just... More

The Otrar is well located, being just across the road from Panfilov Park and a relatively short walk from most of the attractions of the city. The reception area is very Soviet in style, with dated sofas and plenty of marble. Rooms have been renovated a while ago and everything worked - it was a joy to be able to... More

It all depends on your point of view. If you want a Western style hotel with staff who are polite, speak English, understand the concept of customer service and try and make you welcome - then perhaps the Otrar is not for you. On the other hand if you want a taste of old Soviet Union style command economics, where... More

Stayed here for a couple of nights, Rooms a bit tired looking but fully functioning and relatively clean. Bathrooms were fine better than expected. Did not spend a lot of time in the hotel as it is close to Zenkov's Cathedral as yje park is just across the road. It is also only a couple of blocak from the "Green... More

I have never thought that I would land in Kazakhstan before. But since I have a purpose to go there, I decided to go and see the country. Based on an advice from a friend I booked Otrar Hotel in Almaty which is near by to the place of her sister's house. The hotel location is superb. Near to the... More

When your travel planner suggests that you should stay in a Soviet Style Hotel (in any of the Stans) run away and find a new travel planner. Nothing associated with the word Soviet had or has style. This dump, puts on a good front on the main floor, but what awaits you in the rooms is discomfort dulled by poor... More

The hotel is (still) an old Soviet Union hotel in the true sense of the word: overpriced, small rooms still using run-down original Soviet furniture. Well, some things die very slowly. Anyhow: to be fair, there are also some good things: I found the breakfast buffet not so bad, most members of the staff were friendly and helpful, and the... More

The hotel is in an excellent location across from Panfilov Park. We had a room overlooking the park & spires of the cathedral & mountains which was lovely. The hotel has a great feel about it & the good breakfast was enjoyed under the massive chandelier in the dining room. The rooms are a reasonable size with TV, fridge &... More

I stayed at this hotel on March 2013. My expectations are not too high for this old Soviet looking hotel. But this hotel is less than my expectations. Negatives: Small room, breakfast is not good, very very very expensive. Positive: Wireless internet in everywhere, clean rooms, good location.

First of all I should say that you should review a hotel by the standards you should expect for that country and not by what you would expect from a hotel in a European capital. That said I stayed several nights in this hotel as I rested on my round the worls motorcycle trip and found it very pleasant. Yes... More
