“+” – good location, almost in a downtown. There is a huge park (28 Panfilovtschev) opposite of hotel. Variety of restaurant and cafes around. 10 mins walk to a main walking street “Arbat”. Almaty Zoo and “Zelyoniy bazar” market is close. “-“ – unhelpful and rude staff (including their manager). Old rooms with ancient air conditioners that don’t allow sleeping... More

From the outside Otrar Hotel shines with its Soviet style facade. The reception staff speaks some English and were friendly providing a city map with some helpful information. Our room at 2nd floor was tiny and overloaded with cabinets without real usage. The beds were ok and the bathroom was equipped with a bathtub. The breakfast was average but you'll... More

Recently stayed at this hotel. Hotel building is very old but rooms are good enough. Staff can speak English at the reception. Breakfast is very nice. Big Restaurant. Location is excellent. metro station is just close by. There is a walking street on the back side of the hotel. Green market is also located within the walking distance of the... More

I stayed in a painful hotel called Golden Dragon during my first night in Almaty. The next day, I changed to Hotel Otrar and I am so glad to find it. The hotel is not cheap, so is Almaty overall. But the staff is very well trained and they speak good English (sigh). The hotel is massive as it was... More

The best thing about this hotel is the location just across the road from Panfilov Park. That's not to say that there is anything wrong with the hotel, my room was small but functional and more importantly clean. WiFi access was very good and I found the staff helpful. The breakfast was very good, albeit with some interesting foods available.... More

The hotel is well-located near cafes and restaurants, shopping centres, and the interesting Panfilov park. Taxi drivers will find it easily and you can step outside and stop a private taxi immediately. The rooms are small but clean, beds comfy, bathroom OK, good Wifi, BBC news on TV, free hot and cold water, breakfast is plentiful and tasty, though limited in... Booked here after a trek in the mountains East of Almaty, The beds seemed supremely comfortable after time camping in the mountains and we slept well. It's in a good spot if you are working your way around out as well. Staff were helpful and the place is not cheap but that is Kazakhstan. It;s worth staying one night just... More

The Otrar is well located, being just across the road from Panfilov Park and a relatively short walk from most of the attractions of the city. The reception area is very Soviet in style, with dated sofas and plenty of marble. Rooms have been renovated a while ago and everything worked - it was a joy to be able to... More

It all depends on your point of view. If you want a Western style hotel with staff who are polite, speak English, understand the concept of customer service and try and make you welcome - then perhaps the Otrar is not for you. On the other hand if you want a taste of old Soviet Union style command economics, where... More
