I stayed at the Funaya Honsen last April during my trip to southern Japan. I lived in Kochi city for about 20 years but never stayed overnight in Matsuyama which is one of Shikoku four prefectures. It was a magnificent experience of service, dining and professionalism, the one you could only find in Asian countries. Do not be scared of... More

My husband and I stayed at Funaya for 2 nights in April 2013 in a Japanese Style Twin Room. We arrived after just completing the Shimanami Kaido cycling route, so it was nice to stay at such a lovely hotel and spoil ourselves a bit. The hotel is quite expensive, but if you are looking for a very nice, authentic... More

When we arrived at the onsen, we were definitely underwhelmed. The hotel lobby and hallways are very much in need of a renovation - the carpets look like they are stained with water or worn down from use. The rooms, however, deliver what they promise - an authentic ryokan experience. The staff will make your beds for you, as they... More

It's definitely an upscale priced Japanese style on-sen hotel. Room was great but at US$500 not sure if I would be willing to stay there again...value issue. But if you want the experience of staying at one of Japan's premier on-sen hot spots, you might want to give it a try or consider some other property in the area since... More

Stayed here as part of an arranged business trip where the company I was visiting booked the hotel for us. The service was impeccable and the authentic experiences at this hotel were very memorable. I highly recommend the mineral baths, really made me travel weary body feel better.

There are a lot of small and typical ryokans in the surrounding area of the old Dogo Onsen of Matsuyama. If you can manage some Japanese, prefer a last minute booking on site. It not, the big modern hotels could be an alternative but they look a little bit industrial. Funaya is the genuine high class ryokan in this place,... More

I've seen some pretty nice accomodations around the world, and this is on par with the finest. The service was better than i've ever experienced. In western high end hotels the service is great, but it's stuffy, pretentious, and stiff. At Funaya, it's great Japanese service with a genuine delivery. The price includes a 5 course gourmet French meal that... More

Funaya is really a wonderful place to experience japanese ryokan. Top-grade service, clean rooms and excellent kaiseki food. You should not skip the common bath (onsen, segregated), which I preferred to the famous Dogo Onsen
