After a long 2 hour drive from Iya Valley, we finally arrived at Matsuyama. As with most ryokans, check-in is in the mid-afternoon. Thus, we took the opportunity to visit Matsuyama Castle and rode on the Batchan Train. At the hotel entrance, we were warmly greeted by staff and our luggage brought into the large welcoming lobby, similar to a... More

If you can afford it, try this hotel. A really traditional Japanese experience. Reception staff can speak English and give good advice about the town. The Onsen is excellent, you don't need to visit the Dogo with this in your own hotel. The breakfasts are amazing, the best we have had anywhere....but I would avoid the fermented beans, I think... Chose this hotel as they participated in the Dogo Onsen Art this year, and they had a room designed by famous Japanese pottery artist Hayama Yuki. This ryokan also has a nice garden, and their restaurant serves good kaiseiki. The hotel staff speak more than average English, and they are very helpful and professional in showing you how to walk... More

We stayed in this hotel on 13/5/13. After we stepped in the room, the staff came in to serve us tea and cookies. She also made sure we have the correct size of yokata for bath. Her warm smile made us felt good. The room was spacious, clean and beautiful. We like it very much. After a short rest, we... More

I stayed at the Funaya Honsen last April during my trip to southern Japan. I lived in Kochi city for about 20 years but never stayed overnight in Matsuyama which is one of Shikoku four prefectures. It was a magnificent experience of service, dining and professionalism, the one you could only find in Asian countries. Do not be scared of... More

My husband and I stayed at Funaya for 2 nights in April 2013 in a Japanese Style Twin Room. We arrived after just completing the Shimanami Kaido cycling route, so it was nice to stay at such a lovely hotel and spoil ourselves a bit. The hotel is quite expensive, but if you are looking for a very nice, authentic... More

When we arrived at the onsen, we were definitely underwhelmed. The hotel lobby and hallways are very much in need of a renovation - the carpets look like they are stained with water or worn down from use. The rooms, however, deliver what they promise - an authentic ryokan experience. The staff will make your beds for you, as they... More

It's definitely an upscale priced Japanese style on-sen hotel. Room was great but at US$500 not sure if I would be willing to stay there again...value issue. But if you want the experience of staying at one of Japan's premier on-sen hot spots, you might want to give it a try or consider some other property in the area since... More

There are a lot of small and typical ryokans in the surrounding area of the old Dogo Onsen of Matsuyama. If you can manage some Japanese, prefer a last minute booking on site. It not, the big modern hotels could be an alternative but they look a little bit industrial. Funaya is the genuine high class ryokan in this place,... More
