I was there in early winter and like the earlier reviewer said, the corridors/toilet/bathroom weren't heated. However, there is a washbasin ensuite and the toilet was one of those modern contraptions with heated seats, so it wasn't that bad. The room was lovely, overlooking the central garden. The owner was hospitable and it's a manageable walk to the train station,... More

Yamada Bessou gives you a rich and rewarding taste of Ryokan living in the onsen resort town of Beppu, on the eastern coast of Kyushu island. The sprawling estate dates back to the 30s and has some wonderful original Art Deco elements throughout, making it a treat for architectural aficionados as well. Each private room is large as well, with... More

the hotel is Japanese style, very beautiful and well kept. very pleasant external hot tub, but we came in autumn, it was cold, and the bathroom, toilet and all the inside corridors were not heated so one has to wear a coat while using the toilet or brushing your teeth...

This is a very homey family-owned and -run guest house (from since the current owner's great-grandfather). My wife and I felt very welcomed during our stay. Among the facilities are the excellent onsens (separate public men/women and another private one). The location is also very good -- only a 10-15 minute walk from Beppu JR Station which is the hub... Room was big and traditional, service good, shared toilet and bath with a great organic lotions. Wonderful external onsen (hot bath/spring). Nice service, however we had to pay in advance which did not happen anywhere else before and after in Japan. We did not eat breakfast in this ryokan as you can get a nice breakfast in town for 3-5... We had not pre booked accommodation, not certain that we would be staying at Beppu, so we visited the Tourist Information office at the train station. As usual, we experienced great service and were soon picked up in a van and taken to our accommodation, Yamada Bessou Ryokan. The experience of the Ryokan was even better. They had a “special”... I should start by saying that this was our first and only stay in a ryokan. I'm new to the genre and don't have anything to compare it to. Overall, the staff was friendly and helpful and attentive to our needs. The ryokan was a rather large traditional style house. We had a nice big triple room. It was well... More

The Yamada Bessou is a wonderful ryokan with a lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Our room was very large and gave us a full Japanese experience. Unfortunately, due to the terrible rain we did not try the outdoor onsen (hot bath). The Japanese breakfast was served in a lovely room and was definitely something you should try. The whole place... Stayed at the Yamada bessou for two nights and enjoyed the experience. Yes the room smelled a bit musty and the futon did my back in after a while but that was more than made up by the sheer charm of the place. Also this place was one of the few places in Japan that had WiFi. The only real... More

Service was okay -but they seemed a little distant or overworked as if one to many tourist has come through. I really like the Japanese style room and even though ours was a shared washroom I never had any difficulties using the facilities when I needed to. There was lots of space to sit. Tea was available in the room.... More
