We loved our first ryokan experience although it is officially a hotel because there are no meals included (breakfast is optional). However, it is such a beautiful place with perfect rooms (we had a very big and beautiful family room) and a great private onsen.

The first thing that came to mind at the Yamada Bessou was Hawai'i. This is the vibe you can imagine. Our family is not into super über hotels, we like places with personality and history. and the Yamada Bessou definitely has that. The staff--or some of them at least--speaks fluent English, which was very nice. Our room was a good... More

Yamada Bessou is a large old house in a quiet location close to the centre of Beppu, a short walk from the station, shops and restaurants. With wooden floors, futon beds and traditional screens, the guesthouse feels very traditional: indeed, almost a museum. Few of the rooms have private shower or toilet, and the communal shower facilities in the indoor... More

Grand old guest house located not far from the station. We had excellent service provided, enjoyed the outdoor onsen as well. Absolutely loved this old place, and highly recommend it ti anyone passing through Beppu. The rooms were large and airy untypical of ryokans.

We stayed there for three days. The hotel is a typical Japanese house, wooden floors, wood and paper panels. The atmosphere feels like an early 20th century Japanese house. It is located less than 10 minutes by foot from the Beppu station. It has 2 onsen AND a rotenburo. The staff is adorable and always available. Really a really nice... More

If you like traditional accommodation, this one is recommodated. It is nearby Beppu Station, withn 10mins walking distatnce. The decoration is very nice and there is a small garden and a semi-open air hot spring bath you can reserve in advance for priviate using. This is the first time I slept very well after I travelled 4 days in North... More

This traditional ryokan is absolutely wonderful. It's conveniently located just 10 mins walk from Beppu station, but in a quiet street. We had two large tatami rooms - one with futon, the other with kotatsu (table with a blanket which is heated). We could look out over the lovely Japanese garden from the adjacent corridor. We stayed in winter and... More

It was one of my best experience staying in Beppu during my trip to Japan. I booked this traditional Ryokan via the Beppu train station tourist information centre. I was a little worry when i took the recommendation from the tourist information centre as I couldn't speak Japanese and not sure what to expect. With a little worry and huge... More

Pros: a nice ryokan in Beppu. Decent onsens. In walking distance to main road with shopping malls and great restaurants, so as food. Okay price for 5-person room. Cons: Cleanliness, worn-out and smelly bathroom. The door close at 11 pm.

Extremely friendly staff. An easy walk from the train station-a few wrong turns along the way but the local people always polite & helpful. Very comfortable & asked for thicker mattresses on the floor which made it much easier for us. Booked the outside private onsen (hot spring) which is great as you can use it as a couple. Very...
