Pros: a nice ryokan in Beppu. Decent onsens. In walking distance to main road with shopping malls and great restaurants, so as food. Okay price for 5-person room. Cons: Cleanliness, worn-out and smelly bathroom. The door close at 11 pm.

Extremely friendly staff. An easy walk from the train station-a few wrong turns along the way but the local people always polite & helpful. Very comfortable & asked for thicker mattresses on the floor which made it much easier for us. Booked the outside private onsen (hot spring) which is great as you can use it as a couple. Very... A wonderful guesthouse with a rotemburo (outside onsen) with a great location and very helpful staff. We booked late and the only remaining choice was a deluxe room, which had a large Japanese-style bedroom and a pleasant adjacent sitting porch, as well as a private sink and toilet. Parking is available. Tricky to locate on maps, but the GPS in... More

We stayed one night in Yamada Bessou and really liked the place as it's very traditional (they have own onsen too!) japanese ryokan and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Here you can sense the old japanese atmosphere. The ryokan is located near the city centre where you can find restaurants etc. Also the train/bus station is within walking... More

I was there in early winter and like the earlier reviewer said, the corridors/toilet/bathroom weren't heated. However, there is a washbasin ensuite and the toilet was one of those modern contraptions with heated seats, so it wasn't that bad. The room was lovely, overlooking the central garden. The owner was hospitable and it's a manageable walk to the train station,... More

Yamada Bessou gives you a rich and rewarding taste of Ryokan living in the onsen resort town of Beppu, on the eastern coast of Kyushu island. The sprawling estate dates back to the 30s and has some wonderful original Art Deco elements throughout, making it a treat for architectural aficionados as well. Each private room is large as well, with... More

the hotel is Japanese style, very beautiful and well kept. very pleasant external hot tub, but we came in autumn, it was cold, and the bathroom, toilet and all the inside corridors were not heated so one has to wear a coat while using the toilet or brushing your teeth...

This is a very homey family-owned and -run guest house (from since the current owner's great-grandfather). My wife and I felt very welcomed during our stay. Among the facilities are the excellent onsens (separate public men/women and another private one). The location is also very good -- only a 10-15 minute walk from Beppu JR Station which is the hub... Room was big and traditional, service good, shared toilet and bath with a great organic lotions. Wonderful external onsen (hot bath/spring). Nice service, however we had to pay in advance which did not happen anywhere else before and after in Japan. We did not eat breakfast in this ryokan as you can get a nice breakfast in town for 3-5... We had not pre booked accommodation, not certain that we would be staying at Beppu, so we visited the Tourist Information office at the train station. As usual, we experienced great service and were soon picked up in a van and taken to our accommodation, Yamada Bessou Ryokan. The experience of the Ryokan was even better. They had a “special”...
