Very fond memories of staying here, despite the fact that we were forced to stay 3 extra nights (screwing up our itinerary) due to a super typhoon! Yes it does have a slightly weird 1970's youth hostel vibe and it's kind of patched up, but I got the overriding feeling that it's been honed over 40 years to be the... More

The place is a bit old. The toilets are weird, its hard to close the door as the toilet is too far forward. And the place is a bit old. Also Lonely planet's map is a bit deceptive it can be a bit hard to find with car. There is not that much option in this town though. This place... More

I can only echo everyone else's comments. The ryokan is well located and the owner will pick you up and drop you at the ferry, which is great. When you arrive he will take the time to tell you where every thing s and where you can find different restaurants are. Our favourite quote was a dead pan description of... More

I have rarely read a set of reviews that I felt summed up a place so well. This is an old somewhat dilapidated property. However, it is well run, in a good location and the owner is very helpful and manages to provide the small touches that make the place worth going to - if you are not too fussy... More

Agree with most of what is said in the other reviews. What really makes this place is the owner who is incredibly helpful and friendly. Comfortable and clean fairly basic room, just fine. I did not have any problems with aircon so room temperature was fine even though very hot time of the year. Toilets very cramped but clean. Quiet... More

Good value. Old place that could do with a lick of paint, but everything you need is there and the rooms are of a decent size. The owner is an interesting character - minimalist in his utterances but incredibly helpful. He gave us lifts, unprompted, to and from the ferry terminals, and even to a bus stop when we were... This is one of those places you really want to give a fantastic review but can't. However, I would recommend the place as along as your expectations are realistic. A bit more detail .... staying here feels like sleeping on a boat. It is an old wooden building which creaks and rocks. This is not necessarily a negative but the... More

My husband and I stayed at Nakazono Ryokan for 2 nights, on our way through Kagoshima heading down to Yakushima. The location is fantastic for anyone going out from Kagoshima by ferry to Ibusuki, Yakushima etc. as it’s only a short walk from the ferry terminal. Also, Mr Nakazono is happy to book your ticket for you and drive you... More

On a recent trip to Kyushu, we reserved a triple room at Nakazono. The nicest thing about the place is the owner who was very helpful in explaining the layout of Kagoshima. He also took us to our ferry in the morning and let us store our car for three days for a nominal fee. He has a unique way... More
