First of all, the owner is very commited to her guests! She was there when we arrived and excused herself for not being able to say goodbye when we left. Somehow she managed te be back in time to say goodbye! Japanes breakfast and ambiance are great.

Stayed for two nights here on our 35 day Japanese holiday and were not disappointed.Accommodation was clean and modest, food was excellent and the owner was very helpful and as others have said, so elegant. Great eating nearby and very central to all of the sights of beautiful Nara.

We stayed at this traditional Japanese ryokan for two nights while seeing the sights of Nara. It is well located and within easy walking distance of all major sites in the city. The accommodation was modest and clean. Our room for three included a sink and toilet. We utilized the small women's and men's public bath for every day washing... More

You get a nice sized room here and everything is clean and velcoming. The woman that runs the place is like the archetype of japanese gentleness, elegance and smiles. Matsumae is placed in the perfect distance to all the temples.

A nice little place that is good value for money. A Sweet owner who is very helpful The rooms are more basic than other ryokans we stayed at (no shower in the rooms, only a basic toilet, no wifi in the individual rooms) but overall it is a good place to stay The public bath is small but hot and... This is a lovely place to stay in Nara if you are looking for a more traditional Japanese-style ryokan. Don't expect all mod-cons but you will get a warm welcome in what is a small but comfortable inn. We were given the annexe room for three of us, effectively two rooms with lots of space and a toilet - it... More

An affordable way to get a glimpse of a traditional Japanese inn. Ran by its owner and her son. You can request a Japanese breakfast and/or dinner. You can also do some calligraphy. Highly recommended.

As some have mentioned before, this ryokan is a little run down. And other ryokans I have stayed at elsewhere had better bathrooms (these were very small). The female owner is delightful. Her English isn't the best but she tries very hard to pass on information (weather forecasts and places to visit). It is located quite close to the deer... More

I stayed at ryokan matsumae in the winter season for 3 nights. I was very much looking forward to staying here as it looked brilliant on the internet with all the activities you can do like calligraphy. On arrival I was greeted with a less than amused host who seemed like he didn't want to be there my whole stay.... More
