One overnight in Nara can't be perfect without staying here. Since Nara is a city of Buddhism, the atmosphere of the Ryokan made me feel quite and serene. This Ryokan locates at the world heritage area-Naramachi. It is accessible by walking to the Nara Park, old town and the world heritage Gangogi Temple. The tiny shops around are lovely and... More

We had a great experience in Matsumae ryokan during our travelling in Japan. Naomi the owner and her staff were very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed staying in such a traditional place and definitely I would recommend it.

What stands out about this hotel was the politeness and welcoming attitude of the hotel owner/manager. She really made our stay in Nara great, both with her hospitality and her knowledge of the town and activities. She also allowed us to park our vehicle at the property for free, which we had failed to reserve in advance. This saved us... More

We are a family of four (9 & 7 year olds) from New Zealand. Ryokan Matsumae was a great experience with us all sleeping in the same room on very comfy mattresses upon tatami mats. We had a toilet but no shower. The communal shower in the morning was easy and stress free as was the relaxing japanese bath in... More

Naomi was super-helpful and friendly, and even gave our daughter a calligraphy lesson! Tasty breakfast, nice hot baths, great location. We had a room facing the street, but it's very lightly travelled so still quiet.

If you want to stay the night in Nara, this ryokan has one of the best locations in town. You can easily walk anywhere. The prices are slightly high, even without the optional breakfast/dinner. To be honest, we weren't super impressed until we met the owner. She was honestly one of the nicest people we met during our trip. Her... More

This is a nice, reasonably priced ryokan in a perfect location. It is run by a wonderfully gracious owner who speaks English and offers a caligraphy course for guests who are interested. The rooms are clean and modest with private toilets, some with showers. The food is also excellent.

First of all, the owner is very commited to her guests! She was there when we arrived and excused herself for not being able to say goodbye when we left. Somehow she managed te be back in time to say goodbye! Japanes breakfast and ambiance are great.

Stayed for two nights here on our 35 day Japanese holiday and were not disappointed.Accommodation was clean and modest, food was excellent and the owner was very helpful and as others have said, so elegant. Great eating nearby and very central to all of the sights of beautiful Nara.
