An affordable way to get a glimpse of a traditional Japanese inn. Ran by its owner and her son. You can request a Japanese breakfast and/or dinner. You can also do some calligraphy. Highly recommended.

As some have mentioned before, this ryokan is a little run down. And other ryokans I have stayed at elsewhere had better bathrooms (these were very small). The female owner is delightful. Her English isn't the best but she tries very hard to pass on information (weather forecasts and places to visit). It is located quite close to the deer... More

I stayed at ryokan matsumae in the winter season for 3 nights. I was very much looking forward to staying here as it looked brilliant on the internet with all the activities you can do like calligraphy. On arrival I was greeted with a less than amused host who seemed like he didn't want to be there my whole stay.... More

Ryokan Matsumae is close to all the main tourist attractions in Nara. It is a short walk to Naramachi which is great for food and close to Nara park. The hosts are extremely helpful able to show us the best places to eat and visit in Nara and were happy to keep our bags while we explored before we left... More

This is a very good ryokan if you're staying in Nara. It's not hard to find and very close to shops and restaurants. Also Nara Park isn't very far. The owners are very nice, the rooms are clean and the breakfast was very good.

We stayed three days in Nara at this ryokan and enjoyed our stay. The hosts are really nice and helpful, always offering advice so that your stay does not reduce to visiting the Tōdai-ji with hundreds of other tourists. The food (beakfast and diner) was also very good and we took one kaiseki diner which is worth its price. Soaking... More

An excellent place to enjoy your trip to Nara. Near the temples and touristic sites. The lady running the place is very nice and helpfull. Share bathrooms. You can also do Japanese activities like writing in their family room. Try the Japanese breakfast once. Highly recommended. Reservations by email.

This Ryokan is very well located in the centre of Nara. You can walk there from Nara JR station. The bedroom was traditional with tatamis on the floor... We slept very well in it. The toilet / sink area was clean. There is a japanese common shower/bath area for ladies and for men. Very clean as well. The only complain... More

Conveniently located in the middle of Naramachi, the old part of Nara, Ryokan Matsumae is a great place to stay. We stayed there with our three children in one big room on the second floor. The room was spacious with a small toilet and bathroom; we used the public bath down stairs which was very clean. One night we ate... More

I had a fantastic one night stay in this beautiful, comfortable Ryokan thanks to the kind, attentive service from Naokisan and Naomisan. They speak perfect English and were very helpful in telling me where to go, how and even helped me plan my route to Koyasan better than my original directions. As for the ryokan itself, it is an easy... More
