Room: The room was nice and our futons were comfortable. There was ample storage to put our belongings away, and a small floor table and chairs. We had a private toilet and a small wash basin which was great, but the toilet room had a bit of a strange smell. Not sure what it was, but everything was clean, if... More

Naomi was so sweet and helpful. She lights up the place. The other staff were also friendly. Great location. Room and bath were nice. I highly recommend this place. Cant think of anything else to say.

This ryokan was a disappointment. The first room they gave us on the third floor smelled like urine. When I complained, they did move us to a room on the second floor which di not smell like urine, but wasn't very nice either. Maybe the mats or futons are old. Overall, the place seemed dated and unkept, the walls needed... More

The owner is a very welcoming and charming Japanese lady with a very good English, she is very helpful and will be pleased to explain you the best places to visit in Nara. The ryokan is well located (walking distance to most of the temples and parks), very clean and confortable, with a very artistic feeling (the owner is doing... More

I found Matsumae ryokan quite nice for the price. If you are in Nara for business or traveling alone and not looking forward to get luxurious experience for a fraction of usual price, this is the right place. If you seeing the beauty in old simple things, I recommend this place. Breakfast on the ground floor in a room facing... More

To be perfectly honest, we booked this place because all the other, more expensive ryokan in Nara were full, and it's fair to say I had my doubts about this one. The website doesn't inspire confidence, and all the photos I saw didn't make it look very good. Luckily, it's much nicer in real life! Not far from the Nara... More

It is located not far from tourist attractions. The female officer was so glad to explain about the area of Nara and interesting places, of course in English. The room was awesome, especially Japanese stuff and style. However, I had to take a bath with others in big bath room with small hot pool. I requested breakfast from them and... More

We stayed here for 1 night only. The ryokan is in walking distance from JR train station and near to the attractions. The room is in Japanese style, including yukata and tatami. And we like the Japanese set breakfast so much, we ask for 1 meatless (not strict vegetarian) and 1 non-vegetarian. It taste so nice and in good value.... More

I just stayed one night here but I think the location is excellent - just an easy walk to Nara Park which is a must to all who visit Nara. The accommodation is basic and clean, good enough for us who stayed for one night and spent most of the time enjoying Nara. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

This ryokan was fairly basic but extremely affordable and in an excellent location. My room was the smallest of any place I stayed in Japan but was also the cheapest at 54K yen. The staff was very friendly and spoke enough English to assist me in my sight seeing adventures. I would certainly recommend this ryokan for a one to... More
