Shocking hostel for tourists. Curfews on showers is a joke! The hostel staff had no knowledge especially when it came to help with anything outside Nara. Only positive to stay here was the cheap prices but then again you are unable to shower during reasonable hours of the day- not to mention one shower for an entire hostel. Everything is... More

Before heading off to Nara some internet enquiries found most well rated places to be full. Upon arriving in Nara with help of the tourist information we found the Ugaya guesthouse to be one of the very last places with a private room available for a reasonable price. We booked a room that could be used for 3-5 persons occupancy... More

A typical hostel layout upstairs with a very nice common room downstairs. The atmosphere was good and the hostel was quite clean. 500 JPY to store a bag after checkout was not pleasant but I didn't have to store a bag. Showers only until 22:00 was unusual, and only having one shower means you often need to wait. Good hostel... More

Nara Ugaya was the first place we went to upon arriving in Japan. We managed to book with Nara Ugaya thru email and they replied right away. Here are the Pros and Cons. Pros: 1. Home like feeling inside the Guesthouse. 2. Tatami Mats. No better way to experience Japanese culture but to sleep on one. 3. Friendly, Helpful &... More

really friendly and helpful staff. great downstairs social area. great location. Dorms looked pretty nice but you had to go through the dorm to get into our room which was just a small barely decorated square. Also had to pay 500 Yen to leave luggage after checkout so overall impression was not brilliant but otherwise a comfortable and nice place... More

As many of the previous reviews have highlighted the rooms and facilities here are both extremely basic. As mentioned in previous reviews the private rooms can only be reached by going through communal dorms, the doors to these rooms cannot be locked. The benefits of staying here are that it is relatively cheap for Nara, the staff are helpfull and... More

I booked a private room for me and my partner in april 2010 for 6000 yen. The so called private room was inside a girls only bedroom, if you wanted to go for a pee during the night you had to walk between the girls beds, put on the light and hope not to fall over their luggage .... privacy... More

I found this hostal to be very strangely laid out. The front common area was nice but everything else was so cramped. To get to the one private room where we stayed you had to walk through a 4 person girl dorm and as someone else commented on, the dorms are not at all separated. So there is a lack... More

Good place to stay in Nara, we rocked up and were greated warmly and shown around by a lovely Japanese woman who spoke pretty good English. You can buy fairtrade coffee in the morning and easily do your laundry. There are quite a few Japanese guests there which does divide the house somewhat but if you can communicate then they... More

I was expecting your standard backbackers' digs from this place, but it turned out really nice. The lobby has a fairly respectable library, free internet and nice seating. The washing and laundry facilities are all good and clean. And the rooms, though very much communal (not much point getting a three-person room, by the way - it's more or less... More
