When we got to the ryokan, we were a bit skeptical because the interior design of the lobby was a hodgepodge of japanese, egyptian, european themes. It seemed like the owner was inspired by all the places he had travelled. Anyway, the rooms were much nicer, clean, simple with tatami floors. They had nice robes that gave you instructions on... Conveniently located near temples, museum and deer park. This traditional Ryokan ticked all the boxes. Elegant, relaxing and affordable. The Onsen on the first floor is a perfect retreat after a day of sight seeing. The rooms are spacious, beautifully fitted out with all the western conveniences. The Japanese style breakfast is delicious and filling. Attention to detail and friendly,... More

I was so glad that I decided to book this ryokan. It was super clean. All staff were very friendly and thoughtful. As soon as we arrived at the entrance they ran out and offered to take our bags. We were served tea while waiting to be checked in. The meals were delicious and pretty. We had two traditional Japanese... More

A modern ryokan with some amazing in room facilities. We chose an room with it's own in room Japanese style bath and extra sitting room. (Look on the Japanese version of the ryokan's web site to choose the different options for rooms with a Japanese bath.) We had a massive sized room by Japanese standards. It was really well laid... This was a very good Ryokan in Nara for a quite reasonable price as far as Ryokan pricing goes (the dinner and breakfast were worth more than $120, potentially $200 just for those two in some locations). They also have a onsen which was quite enjoyable. Bed: comfy bed install on Tatami after dinner Dinner and Breakfast are included and... More

We had a comfortable stay at the Hotel New Wakasa. It looked more modern than the Ryokan we stayed in the past. The rooms though were the traditional rooms with tatami. We booked the room with the outdoor jacuzzi. At 17000+ yen per person per night, I expected a little more luxury and comfort. The outdoor jacuzzi could only comfortably... More

The hotel is located nicely close to Nara's main attraction (or maybe because the city isn't that big?). Walking distance to Todaiji temple and several other smaller temples. From Kintetsu Nara it takes around 20 mins walking time or you may take a 5 mins taxi ride with 660 yen. Or if you take JR line, it will be about... More

We stayed in several places in our 10 day trip in Japan and New Wakasa was definitely the best. The room was spacious and clean. The onsen/Japanese bath was a great extra. The food both for dinner and for breakfast was great and exceeded our expectations- all sorts of beautiful, intricate, and delicious dishes. Finally, the service was top notch-... More

Don't be put off by the exterior or the reception area of this hotel! On arrival I thought we'd made a terrible mistake but the staff couldn't have been nicer and once they'd shown us to our room and the spa, we felt a lot happier. It's very traditional which makes it a great ryokan - tatami floors, futon beds... More

Beautiful hotel, an onset (Japanese bath), Fantastic dinner and breakfast, friendly staff. It is conveniently located near the historic area. They provide a wonderful walking map to get your Nara trip started. Rooms, food, and bath are Japanese style, which in my opinion makes this a wonderful experience. (The toilet is western style. :) you are provided with robes, like... More
