Stayed here in 2010. A beautiful place. Just loved the place and all the stories they had in the hallways about the celebrities that have visited the place over the last 100 or more years. Not the most glamorous place, but really a gem.

We got a great room with a really good view of the mountains - other rooms are I suspect less impressive without a view. The hotel is quite quaint - not in a bad way. We didn't eat dinner there so can't comment on the restaurant. Breakfast is fairly limited - I would rather have had Japanese food than an...

I have to agree with the review by decca_mac, unfortunately we had the former experience.
Travelling in Japan for 3 weeks we try to temper cheap hotels with a few special ones. The Kanaya was supposed to be a special one and in a way it was. The lobby is beautiful and you feel like you've stepped back in time...

I have stayed at the Nikko Kanaya twice. Five years ago i stayed in a deluxe room in the annex and i loved the experience (especially because my father was paying for it). The hotel is incredibly well situated near the bridge and it has a lovely old school feeling to it. It was magicial! But . . . i...

We stayed for my birthday in April courtesy of a Japenese friend doing the booking. I'm not sure what to say.
There was no acknowledgement of my birthday but my day was spectacular and then the next day i woke up to snow.
The French restaurant was superb, Japanese (yoshio) ordinary but maybe because we have done some spectacular places...

This hotel really is very beautiful. The service is outstanding! The hotel does look like it needs a little renovation, but it is the oldest hotel in Nikko, so keep that in mind when you visit.
My partner and I had a very comfortable stay here for 2 nights. It is located approximately half way between the main part of...

Opened in 1873 and thus one of Japan's oldest and best-known western-style establishments, the Nikko Kanaya Hotel combines a modern facilities with a comfortable old-world atmosphere and excellent western and Japanese cuisine. Close to the Toshogu Shrine. recommended!

Let's be frank, I am a lover of all things traditional. Thus, it didn't take me too long to decide on this most prestigious and historical hotel in Nikko. Being first time visitors to Nikko, we took the Tobu line from the Tobu-Asakausa station in Tokyo to the Tobu-Nikko station, journey was 1 hour and 45 minutes. Then a short...

This is a historical place. It was built back in the time when the Japanese were trying to marry the traditional Japanese architecture with the western architecture. That is why the furniture and the decorations may seem a bit strange to the eyes of foreigners, but it is very typical of buildings of this era. Obviously the owners are very...

We stayed for 2 nights and had a B-Style room on the 3rd floor with a nice queen bed, fairly large, facing the garden and mountains, nice views. The hotel feels very 'historic', somewhat outdated I guess; and many things are quite funky, to say the least, but if you are into 'experiences' this place is a good choice. The...
