Husband and I stayed one night in mid-February. We had read some not-so-positive reviews so we were cautious but were pleasantly surprised instead. We don't speak or read Japanese and the staff were very accommodating. We were greeted so warmly with tea by Mrs. Fukuhara who speaks English. She accompanied us to our room to explain how to use the... More

I've been to Nikko Hoshi no Yado twice with a group, and I will probably return. The food is delicious. The main focus is tofu in several varieties. Warm yuba, cold yuba sashimi, tofu you make yourself and so on. You also get a bit of local wagyu beef from Tochigi, nice soba noodles, rice with matsutake mushrooms and so... More

I have stayed at many Ryokan around Japan. This place was the first. 1. The rooms and hallways stunk like smoke 2. They charged 5,000 yen more for an "upgraded" meal that contains sashimi (though my GF is a vegetarian, I figured I'd bite the bullet on the cost so I could have the sashimi. The meal included exactly *2*... More

Situation in a great location near Shinkyo bridge. Pick up service available from the train station. Very nice onsen (indoor and outdoor). Tofu specialty dinner was great. Nothing but perfect!..........

My husband and I stayed here for two nights in early nov 2012. We found the welcome warm and the people kind and helpful despite a langage barrier. The location near Shin-kyo (bridge) was very convenient for visitng the temple complexes. We had a breakfast and dinner package. Despite not being a fan of japanese cuisine we enjoyed the meals... I travelled to this ryokan in early October. The view from this elevated location was beautiful. The noise from the street below was non-existent. There is a steakhouse touching the parking area. Parking is convenient and free. Extremely close to the Nikko National Park (UNESCO). Many shops in the vicinity, especially one quaint little ramen shop. Great offerings, no robbery.... More

I wanted my adult son to experience a Japanese ryokan. He had stayed in some when we lived in Japan but he had been too young to remember them. The Nikko Hoshi no Yado is modern in traditional style. It's location is perfect: next to the venerable Kanaya Hotel and only 150 metres from the Shinkyo Bridge and the entrance... More
