This is a very high end ryokan and possibly one of the best out there. The location in the mountains is wonderful and easy to get to from Tokyo. The service is fantastic and the rooms are great. It doesn't get any more traditional and Japanese. The kids loved it, everyone had a fantastic time to wear kimonos and sleep... More

Family visited for one night in April 2015. One of the most lovely places we have ever visited in any part of the world. A lovely, peaceful, authentic (yet 5-star luxurious) Japanese cultural experience. Our rooms were beautiful and comfortable (even sleeping on the floor was super comfortable). Our hostess, Kumi was lovely, welcoming, and educational. The staff went out... More

Visited as a couple for one night and stayed in the Kadan Suite with Jacuzzi/Steam Room (Botan) It has been a few years since I have been to this ryokan. 6-7 years ago when I last went, this was already the most expensive and prestigious onsen ryokan in the Hakone area then. I do not recall the prior price exactly,... More

This ryokan offers a special atmosphere and a topnotch kaiseki dining experience BUT it's screaming out for a major refurbishment. I wouldn't have minded the worn out furniture and odd lobby smell if the hotel wasn't so overpriced. Our butler Hiroshi was wonderful and couldn't have been more attentive and professional. Not worth the money. Would not return.

My partner and I stayed at Gora Kadan during our first trip to Japan in March 2015. As this was my first experience with Japanese culture and first time at a hot spring resort, I didn't have anything to rate it against. I was a bit disappointed to leave Tokyo for a more remote place like Hakone - I love... More

We stayed during Christmas for 2 nights for our anniversary. First of all, the reservation was frustrating. It seemed that the staff couldn't speak English at all.All communications were through email with standard template only. They couldn't reply on specific enquiries. Then come to the room and service. The room was dirty and smelly. This is not a hotel at... More

For many first comers to Japan or to a Ryokan, Gora Kadan will be an amazing experience. But the more you immerse into the Japanese culture and live through the "omotenashi no kokoro" -so unique to the Japanese-, you might find Gora Kadan a bit too cold, a bit to unjapanese, a bit too commercial and impersonal, a bit to... Stayed here for one night in February and wished we had booked for two nights. Traditional Japanese room with outdoor hot spring pool. Great service from our room attendant and lovely dinner and breakfast served in the room. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. Expensive but worth the cost for the experience.

Rooms are fabulous, very spacious, with balcony and wooden circle bathtubs. And true Japanese! Rooms with tatami floors and special jap doors and walls. Kimono dresses for each and every one. They also have internal swimming pool and jacuzzi outdoor. Three relaxing sofas with massages. We only stayed one night (is quite expensive) unfortunately coincident with a typhoon that overpassed...
