Family holiday with two toddlers to a country more than 7 hours by flight away is truly a luxury. Therefore we decided to splurge on hotels given how far (and how much effort involved) we have travelled and how short our stay was. We are glad we chose Gora Kadan as it was a truly unique, authentic, extravagant and memorable... More

I wrote a review of Gora Kadan, a few years ago and felt then that this was one of the best hotels in Japan after more than 10 years of traveling to Japan. Well, we have just stayed at Gora Kadan again, our fourth visit in the last few years. It is not only great but even better and I... More

This was our first onsen experience and Gora Kadan did not disappoint. They helped arrange a pick up from our train which was easy and convenient on arrival. Our room attendant was wonderful. She was so kind and it felt like she was always there to help without feeling overwhelming. We also had massages in the spa the following morning... More

my wife and I stayed for one night, but it just wasn't long enough! The evening meal was served in our room,Japanese style and was a veritable feast. I especially recommend the onsen which we booked privately and there was no extra charge. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who wishes to savour the Japanese culture.

This place is really cool. The general Hakone area is beautiful and the hotel itself doesn't disappoint. We were only here for one night and I definitely could have enjoyed another night, possibly two, before going stir crazy. This was my first time in a tradition Japanese inn and thought all of the architecture was beautiful. If I had spent... More

Amazingly large room and impeccable service. Our own private onsen on the terrace and a family one in the gardens. Also a male only and a female only onsen, which swapped every day. The food was beautifully presented and the nine course dinner was impeccably served by you room attendant. The futons on the floor were comfortable and warm. Why... More

As a frequent guest at Relais & Chateau properties all over the world we looked forward with great expectation to our stay at Gora Kadan. Our expectation level was high and was not rewarded. We expected a serene, authentic albeit luxurious ryokan worthy of a $1,600 per night tab. They did not deliver. Our room was an unconvincing hybrid of... More

I have stayed at other top ryokan in japan before, like at the Hiiragiya and Tawaraya in Kyoto, so I based my review on my experiences at the other places vs the Gora Kadan. Reservation - total screw up by the Gora Kadan. I had booked my stay through Relais & Chateaux whom the Gora Kadan is a member of.... More

An amazing experience, though not quite as expected. The hotel is bigger than I'd imagined, and the building a little less pretty. I was also surprised how close to the road and the train track it is. But these niggles were forgotten when we entered our room- it was awesome, very traditional, with our own balcony with a little garden,... More

It is located close to Hakone Village at about 1.5 hour from Tokyo. It has a mix of modern and traditional Japanese feeling at the same time. The Hotel 29 rooms has been extended next to a Western residence used by the imperial family. It has a beautiful view of the valley below. This calm retreat is provided with hot... More
