An amazing experience, though not quite as expected. The hotel is bigger than I'd imagined, and the building a little less pretty. I was also surprised how close to the road and the train track it is. But these niggles were forgotten when we entered our room- it was awesome, very traditional, with our own balcony with a little garden,... More

It is located close to Hakone Village at about 1.5 hour from Tokyo. It has a mix of modern and traditional Japanese feeling at the same time. The Hotel 29 rooms has been extended next to a Western residence used by the imperial family. It has a beautiful view of the valley below. This calm retreat is provided with hot... More

I've been to Gora Kadan back in 2007 (7 years ago) was a little hesitant because it is not new and afraid it is worn. But I was wrong. Still so new and the most amazing hotel I have ever stayed. Pros: - Each room has it's own character (we went with 4 different families, each had a different room)... More

There was only one consistent advice we got when we were planning our Japan trip: stay in a Ryokan with an onsen (a traditional inn with hot springs). Ryokans by any standard are expensive and if I was to strip naked with others and dip in and out of a hot natural spring I was keen to stay at one... More

A bit secluded, and with the railway that passes just on the backyard of the location, to reach it you need a taxi, or service from the hotel. The structure is adjacent to a western style villa used by the Imperial family. Upon entrance (through a small Japanese garden) you are greeted by the owner and the staff. The public... More

My family and I spent 2 nights at the Gora Kadan in September and it's an experience that will live with me forever. From the lovely welcome to the young lady that saw to our every needs (I am ashamed to say 3 weeks later her name has escaped me) but the memory of her never will. The location is... More

Very traditional and incredible! Amazing place and warm people. Definitely we will come back with the children. Simple but very good restaurant. We had a delicious private dinner with the elephants. A tasty curry with rice was served and very good wine list.

It is not easy to describe the experience of staying at this Ryokan. The service, the care with the details, the landscapes and the cuisine are awesome, but there is an extra that only in Japan you will find. Luxury here, is different, subtle and delicate. Well, it is unforgettable! Do not miss the Hakone trip, for the best Mount... More

We stayed one night at the Gora Kadan, looking to experience a ryokan while visiting Hakone. We were very satisfied - the hotel is beautiful, the attendants provide a very original and touching service, the hot waters are great.

We stayed there and loved everything from the reception when we arrived to the rooms, the food and the drinks....Superb ryokan. The owner came out to send us away with a selection of restaurants in Kyoto our next stop. On the day we left, I forgot my golden earrings and a diamond ring; I gave them a call and very... More
