If only we had more time at the Gora Kadan! After a day of exploration, we arrived tired and ready to relax. We should have skipped the last shrine of the day and headed to Gora Kadan... as you enter you immediately feel relaxed and peaceful. Just what we needed in the middle of a 12 day exploration of Japan.... More

The amazing building, the wonderful main hot springs, the beautiful rooms with private hot springs in the room, the exquisite food, the superb service and care by the staff, the gorgeous view all make it the best experience available in Hakone. Beware- its nearby the train tracks and these can be hear during the day. Also, the food can be... More

I was not a guest in the hotel, visited to experience kaiseki only. Disappointing kaiseki experience! Even the premium set (11000++ vs. basic 5500++) was disappointing and totally didn't worth it. Please do yourself a favor and don't go there for food.

Having experienced the sights of Tokyo and Kyoto at "western style" hotels, we decided to experience a traditional Japanese inn with onsen (hot baths) for our last night. This is a very high-end ryoken, with excellent facilities and personal service. A very special experience we will remember with fond memories as a family for a long time. Expensive, but highly... This is a very high end ryokan and possibly one of the best out there. The location in the mountains is wonderful and easy to get to from Tokyo. The service is fantastic and the rooms are great. It doesn't get any more traditional and Japanese. The kids loved it, everyone had a fantastic time to wear kimonos and sleep... More

Family visited for one night in April 2015. One of the most lovely places we have ever visited in any part of the world. A lovely, peaceful, authentic (yet 5-star luxurious) Japanese cultural experience. Our rooms were beautiful and comfortable (even sleeping on the floor was super comfortable). Our hostess, Kumi was lovely, welcoming, and educational. The staff went out... More

Visited as a couple for one night and stayed in the Kadan Suite with Jacuzzi/Steam Room (Botan) It has been a few years since I have been to this ryokan. 6-7 years ago when I last went, this was already the most expensive and prestigious onsen ryokan in the Hakone area then. I do not recall the prior price exactly,... More

This ryokan offers a special atmosphere and a topnotch kaiseki dining experience BUT it's screaming out for a major refurbishment. I wouldn't have minded the worn out furniture and odd lobby smell if the hotel wasn't so overpriced. Our butler Hiroshi was wonderful and couldn't have been more attentive and professional. Not worth the money. Would not return.

My partner and I stayed at Gora Kadan during our first trip to Japan in March 2015. As this was my first experience with Japanese culture and first time at a hot spring resort, I didn't have anything to rate it against. I was a bit disappointed to leave Tokyo for a more remote place like Hakone - I love... More

We stayed during Christmas for 2 nights for our anniversary. First of all, the reservation was frustrating. It seemed that the staff couldn't speak English at all.All communications were through email with standard template only. They couldn't reply on specific enquiries. Then come to the room and service. The room was dirty and smelly. This is not a hotel at... More
