After spending 3 days running around Kyoto this was a truly a wonderful way to spend two days doing nothing! Faboulous service and excellent food, try and book a suite with the private outdoor hot spring! Also has an underground bar where we spent an evening sipping martinis. I also recommend a spa treatment, throughly spoilt, bliss. more

Gora Kadan is known as one of the best ryokans in Japan for a reason - its spectacular attention to detail is a reflection of the entire Japanese ethos. Western travelers sometimes take a few days or weeks to slowly relax into the simple way that the Japanese express perfection and mastery in the details - we're just not accustomed... more

We spent only one night here but we had a great experience. The food is great and the hot spring even better. Is a little bit expensive, but you are treated with "white gloves". more

Honestly, I was not looking forward to a ryokan experience, I didn't want to sleep on the floor or have an uncomfortably designed room and bathroom. I was mistaken, our stay at Gora Kadan was absolutely delightful. The room was well decorated in a traditional Japanese way and the futon I slept on was remarkably comfortable, with no resemblance to... more

Gora Kadan, situated in Hakone, in close proximity to Tokyo, is a traditional japanese spa " ryokan" We have been there several times, in the past we have always flown into Kyoto, stayed at the New Otani (separate review at a later date) with views of the fabulous Osaka castle, taking the shinkansen (bullet train) to Odawara the following day,... more

We stayed there for One night only. The room is just ok. It s modern, very clean, nice size (not big), and nice. But for the price we pay, there's nothing impressive at all. The food is good, but among the 3 ryokan that we stayed during our trip to Japan, I would say the food at gora kadan is... more

Gora Kadan is a special place, peaceful and tranquil and in the most stunning setting. If you are looking for peace and quiet and to simply relax then this is the place to go. It is not by any stretch of the imagination cheap BUT I do feel you get what you pay for. First class service, first class facilities,... more

Stayed in Gora Kadan for one night in October during vacation in Japan. This is the most incredible property nestled in the mountains with unbelievable views. Although the ryokan was fully booked, it felt deserted and very calm. We had a tatami room that was larger than we’ve anticipated, it had a bedroom, dining area and garden. The spa was... more

As a first time visitor to Japan on a business trip, I asked my local office to book me into a real Ryokan, to getYo a feel for how the top-end Japanese take their short breaks. Gora Kadan is famed as one of Japan's finest countryside hotels, and I would not argue with that. It's about 2 hours from central... more

We stayed in a room with a private outdoor hot spring bath--definitely the best part! The shower (glass enclosed and steam fitted) was also located just outside our room on our private deck. It was wonderful! Our hostess was very attentive and gracious. The only sour note was the weird guy who checked us in and out. If I am... more
