A bit of a mixed bag. Good position with the Hakone – Tozan bus stop directly outside making it easy to get to everything. Hotel has loads of facilities – pool, hot spring bath (free!), shops and lots of different restaurants - and was clearly once a splendid hotel. However, away from the public areas it is somewhat faded now... More

Update to my 2011 review: Stayed here a few weeks ago as we usually do annually. This year we got a particularly bad room and floor. We request non-smoking room. One would think all non-smoking rooms are on a non-smoking floor. Well, while walking down our hall, we noticed not all the rooms are non-smoking so smoke smell migrates into... More

Having had a great vacation in Japan after visiting toyko, kyoto hiroshima, hakone,we stayed in the hakone hotel very old hotel in need of huge refurbish needed, you even get the old fashioned key to your room, breakfast very poor buffet very badly presented, and the worse hotel management I had the displeasure of dealing with, after six items of our clothing went missing when housekeeping... Nice hotel in good location but in need of a little modernization of the rooms. Lobby is spacious, nothing special. Room seemed to be set up in a ryokan style which is okay, but mine was extremely cramped. I could barely get my luggage into the room and then not much room for moving around. Small flat screen tv. No... More

Hotel is in an excellent location - right across the street from Yunessen and a 15-20 minute walk to the Cablecar/Ropeway system. The hotel itself benefits from the location - excellent mountain views and the hotel itself is right on a garden. The public bath / onsen contained an outdoor portion, as well, which seemed to be a genuine onsen.... More

I stayed in a western style room one weekend in October as part of a package tour, so the price was much lower than if one booked it separately. The room was very spacious with separate rooms each for the bath, toilet and sink (something I have never seen in Japan). it had a big picture window that overlooked a... More

Travlled to Japan back in February with my father and my son. Stayed two nights at Hotel Kowakien. Easy access to the hotel. There are bus stops right infront of the hotel. Nice buffets for dinner and breakfast (included). Friendly staff with very efficient English skills. It's nice to just relax, enjoy the nice onsen, followed by a nice meal.... More
