We got to this ryokan as part of an organised tour of Japan. A disappointing choice is an understatement for this accommodation. The lobby ad waiting area were very unclean with bugs and flies everywhere. They kept our bags with no security just lying in the front room. When we came back to check in to the room it took... This ryokan is really nice at the first look... Gook looking at the main entrance. But... It's not like the entrance, It's dirty, dusty, old... if you want to go back in the past, you will find every details like old carpet, bathroom and dust... Only the breakfast is local ! Also really expansive, 150€ in cash for sure... Except... More

The ryokan is pretty old but it was spacious. I appreciate the in-house onsen. There weren't many users so I got to enjoy it all to myself! Love it. The breakfast spread includes both traditional and continental meals. It was OK. For the price I paid, I think this is of decent value. Do not expect luxuries.

First of all, I had to scour the internet to find clear walking directions to the hotel, since we were arriving after the buses stop running (ie. after 18:35). I finally found a set, which I’ve included here. Directions on foot from Hakone Yumoto Station: About 12-20 minutes on foot from Hakone Yumoto Station, depending on how fast you walk.... More

We stayed there just for one nigh to see how is the japanese life in a ryokan. It's a littje bit surprising with tatami and futon... The ryokan is located at some distance from Hakone Yumoto Station but a bus (at Yen 100 per people) dropped you just in front of the ryokan. We have been very satisfied with the... More

It is a simple but nice ryokan. Do not expect luxuries. Very big however, with a lot of rooms, a good onsen and a big breakfast room. Room was huge and we enjoyed our stay there very much. It is not far from Hakone-machi station (walking 15 mins) but it is up in the hill, so if you are not... More

A traditional old rambling hotel. Looks a bit worn and tired, but does have character. The rooms are traditional old style with low table and bedding on floor - surprisingly comfortable - we slept very well having used some of the extra matressing to be found in room storage cupboard. Room has titami rush matting on floor, flat screen tv,... More

We spent 10 days vacation in Japan and this is the first Ryokan we've stayed in. We can't deny that the hotel is old but we can tell that we got great services. Its staff are very nice and friendly. In addition, the room is quite large. We really enjoy spending our time in this Ryokan. Breakfast is delicious.

We have lived in Tokyo for 10 months and this was the second Ryokan we've stayed in. The first was expensive and fabulous (Shiraume in Kyoto) and we decided to try a less expensive one and compare. We stayed in Shunkoso Ryokan in Nov 11 and found it less than perfect. It is shabby and worn and in dire need... More

I am guessing that when organising our 12-day trip to Japan, our group leader's guiding principles were "cheap and cheerful" and "reasonably authentic Japanese experience." The Shunkoso was our second ryokan. It's located up a steep hill, within reasonable walking distance of the local station (you can also travel from the station by bus). Our family room was a fair...
