Location is excellent. Just steps away from the Sounzan cable car. Although the hotel was fully book, but it is still very quiet. Dinner and breakfast was excellent. First experience with onsen. We tried all of them the indoor outdoor and private.

I am abit worried when news reports of Hakone, Owakudani volcano having signs of eruption. So, I emailed the ryokan, and they reassured me that it will be safe and they are operational as usual. so there I arrived at Sounkaku after taking the train from Shinjuku to Odawara/Hakone Yumoto and transferred to Gora and took the ropeway to Sounzan.... We did have a nice stay at the Gora Sounkaku. But, and the fault again may have been my expectations, it was a bit underwhelming. The private onsen (spa) was nice but small. Barely big enough for two people. The rooms were well equipped but plain. The food was extensive and unique which was terrific. We requested no seafood for... More

This was our first ryokan experience and we had a lovely stay. The location was awesome - just steps away from the Sounzan rope way and cable car stop. The service was top notch. Our attendant Sato took excellent care of us. It was wonderful to have one person assigned to helping us check-in, tour the facilities, serve all meals,... More

We stayed in this ryokan for 2 nights in April 2015 - it was absolutely brilliant. We paid for a room with our own private outside hot bath and after travelling around Japan for over 2 weeks it was a fantastic treat at the end of our holiday. Things seemed to have changed since the last review we were served... More

Location: Unbeatable. When you get off the cable car at Sounzan from Gora, exit the station and it's right there. Hospitality: Courteous Japanese hospitality at its best. However, not too many English speaking staff, which didn't bother us too much, but it's something you have to expect. Onsen (the communal hot tub): They have a small indoor one and a... More

Me and my wife enjoyed our 1 night here very much. The service was very good and professional. The rooms were cozy with a very nice private outdoor onsen. The food was well prepared and very delicious. We went at the start of December. It was in between seasons. For those interested, I think a snowy landscape would have made... More

How about being assigned one person to attend to you on all your meals! If that is not going to make you feel special. This is our first time to stay in a ryokan and I do not know if the personal attention given us is standard in all ryokans but Gora Hanougi Sounkaku did not disappoint. The western architecture... The welcome alone was enough to warm the heart. A lovely Matcha tea on arrival before being shown to the amazingly spacious room with all you need for a proper modern ryokan experience, including an outdoor personal Onsen. Service was impeccable, personal service from the same lady throughout our two night stay. 11 course meal served in the room. Futons... More

We stayed here for a couple of nights and it was definitely a highlight of our 2 weeks in Japan. It was a Ryokan experience with western influence The staff were fantastic. We had a young lady (I cannot remember her name - sorry!) look after us from check in until we left. She was just superb, spoke good enough... More
