My boyfriend an I stayed at Yamanochaya for one night on our way between Kyoto and Tokyo - it was incredible. This small ryokan is only a short walk (15mins) from the main shopping street and Hakone station, but is in a quiet location across the river and away from other hotels. We were greeted at the entrance by several... More

We stayed at Yama no Chaya for one night in April and did not want to leave! If one is need of a ryokan pampering experience complete with in-room hot spring tub, excellent fresh meals and superior service this is one place to definitely try. The property was very nice, with 5 shared hot spring baths that could be used... More

I have to say this was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Imagine, we sat outside in the moon gazing balcony at night and all we could hear was the gushing sounds of the Haya river. The room was a traditional Japanese tatami room with attached toilet. I was particularly impressed with the wash basin as it... More

Beautiful ryokan next to a river and surrounded by greenery. Room was amazing with private onsen outside - once in a life time experience. Delicious dinner served in room - service was five star. Lovely sake bar and carp pond outside. Would love to return one day.

A truly wonderful stay! We stayed for one night in April, which was fantastic. The ryokan is located near to Hakone Yumoto station – the easiest way to reach the ryokan is probably by taxi. Unfortunately, we had to walk as the road was closed due to an accident. It’s a good 20minutes walk, uphill, so a taxi would definitely... More

This is a really fantastic Ryokan. Very friendly and pleasant reception. You feel from the first moment at home. Very beautiful rooms, furnished with love. The meal is also fantastic and presented and served in a very lovingly way. Unfortunately we had time only to experience one onsen. But this was wunderful.

I stayed at this ryokan for one night before going back home after a week of business in the Tokyo area. For those who don't mind indicating their exact schedule ahead of time, this is an outstanding experience. I had a japanese style suite with a separate bedroom, reading room and my own onsen, all very well maintained and clean.... More

I must say it wasn't easy to get to the ryokan if you were to take the train to tonasawa station. Best way is cab from hakone-yumoto. Anyhow, the bridge crossing to the ryokan has an amazing view of the lake. Don't recommend walking to the ryokan. Best on cab as it brings you across to the ryoken's entrance up... More

Was recommended by a friend to take the plunge - it was the most expensive hotel stay I've had but it was worthwhile (at least till I get the credit card bill). Also, kids were chargeable at 70% (for my 9 yr old) and 50% (for my 4 yr old) of adult rates so it made the 1 night very... More

Atmosphere of relaxation and meditation... Rooms are clean and spacious, shared baths are big, nice... and were always deserted. But the best is of course your private bath with some very little glimpse of the sky, mostly of the trees in front of your room. The onsen water is crazy hot... But gives very soft skin :) Now, the food:... More
