My wife and I stayed here a few nights for our honeymoon. It was an amazing experience. It was a bit jarring at first as there are certain procedures and etiquette to follow that we were unfamiliar with. But from the moment we set foot inside we felt like we were some sort of high class royalty from historical Japan.... More

Gora has always held a special place in our heart. I took my wife and my-then-three-year-old daughter for a visit a few years back. Everything was perfect...from the picnic in the Odakyu Romance Car , the scenic train criss-crossing foggy mountain to the exquisite stay at Gora Kadan. So when my parents wanted a family trip, I suggested a stay... More

The website says 3 minutes from the train station. OK fine. But directions? Sign? Nothing. It was by pure luck through the kindness of two Hyatt Regency staff who saw us floundering around and gave us a ride in their van to the place. This place is difficult to find...directions from the train station - Left turn as you exit... More

My partner and I recently stayed two nights at Gora Kansuiro from 23 - 25 Feb in the Yuri room. As I have some tattoos, it was necessary that we select a ryokan that had a private onsen. While I never asked specifically if the ryokan would allow me to use the public bath, I assumed as such based on... More

It was an amazing experience staying at one of the free-standing villas for one night. The garden and the facilities make you feel that you're entering another world as soon as you step in. The management has preserved a very traditional feel and look, complete with a large Japanese garden with intricate design and small walkways. It felt serene and... More

Stayed 2 nights in a Hanare (standalone) villa (believe we were in the Yamamichi Hanare) at Gora Kansuiro, as part of our honeymoon trip in Japan. The private garden was beautiful - and we were fortunate to have a good view of the garden from our room. The room itself met our expectations (consistent with other reviews -- traditional looking,... More

Beautiful grounds and a traditional house to stay in, meals served in your room with a maximum of ceremony and lots of touches make this a real Japanese experience. It's true the rooms were not new, but I don't think that detracts from the experience. The staff were excellent, and when I tried to get a taxi to a neighbouring... More

To say that a stay at a ryokan is an unusual experience for a Western traveller is an understatement. That's why most of us try it. You have to be prepared though what "the experience" involves. This place is old, apparently 100 years, and has not been renovated for some time. Our room was literally a small box and it... More

Stayed for two nights during a tour of Japan, and it was the highlight of our trip. As others have said, the buildings and interior are old, but this just adds to the experience and makes it feel very authentic and traditional. It would actually be a shame if they did renovate / update it as I think it would... More

Would thoroughly recommend this place. Gardens and baths are beautiful. Whilst it is very expensive the meals were amazing with very friendly service. The Hakone areas is great and definitely visit the open air museum near by which has fantastic sculptures.
