Beautiful grounds and a traditional house to stay in, meals served in your room with a maximum of ceremony and lots of touches make this a real Japanese experience. It's true the rooms were not new, but I don't think that detracts from the experience. The staff were excellent, and when I tried to get a taxi to a neighbouring... More

To say that a stay at a ryokan is an unusual experience for a Western traveller is an understatement. That's why most of us try it. You have to be prepared though what "the experience" involves. This place is old, apparently 100 years, and has not been renovated for some time. Our room was literally a small box and it... More

Stayed for two nights during a tour of Japan, and it was the highlight of our trip. As others have said, the buildings and interior are old, but this just adds to the experience and makes it feel very authentic and traditional. It would actually be a shame if they did renovate / update it as I think it would... More

Would thoroughly recommend this place. Gardens and baths are beautiful. Whilst it is very expensive the meals were amazing with very friendly service. The Hakone areas is great and definitely visit the open air museum near by which has fantastic sculptures.

We must have had the worst room in the place. It was dingy, damp, with mould round the walls of the bathroom and damp patches on the walls. The approach to the room itself was down a long dark concrete passage past drains and peeling walls. The view from our room was over plastic sheeting covering other passages. I am... More

First the good points. Everyone who works here is fantastic; friendly and eager to help. The lovely lady who looked after us, Hansa, couldn't have been better and the food was sublime. To my mind, however, authentic doesn't have to mean shabby. We paid £300 a night to stay here and, at that money, you do expect a certain level... More

Amazing Japanese inn with its own outdoor onsen and fabulous food. Only three minutes walk from the station too. Wear your kimono and get served a ten course meal. Be prepared to sleep on a futon which isn't erected until after dinner and to have your privacy continually interrupted by your attentive service! Hakone is a great little area to... More

I would say it's a must do, and the only reason I did not give it a 5 star, it that the rooms are a little run down and need some renovation. The food is authentic Japanese haute cuisine, and might stretch your boundaries a bit. You need to go with an open mind about the food or really don't... More

We decided to splurge on this Ryokan, and loved it. Very interesting experience. A few things we decided: - it's important to be on time, or early. We felt it was a bit rushed for us to get settled. Through random course of events during the day, we arrived 15 minutes before the 5pm cut off. It was enough time,... More

One of the highlights of our trip. Yes, the rooms are a little dated but this really doesn't detract from the experience of staying in a traditional in. We were in one of the outer rooms, with our own hallway and indoor onsen. The food was amazing- ten courses for dinner and eight for breakfast. Having your own personal room... More
