This is my second experience of a proper ryokan and one that did not disappoint. We enjoyed our room, the stay, the private onset and the dinner and breakfast enormously. The setting was extremely peaceful. If I ever revisit Otaru, I will definitely book this ryokan again. We managed to book a transfer from Chitose airport which was also seamless... More

My friend and I visited Kourakuen last winter during the Otaru Lantern Festival. We stayed at a standard room with dinner + breakfast plan. This ryokan was the best ryokan I had experienced in Japan. I was touched by the staff's helpfulness and hospitality, though they didn't speak English. The dinner was fresh, delicious and generously offered with variety such... More

We have been looking for a good, traditional onsen place in Oatrus and we came across this one on the web. It's not easy to book via their website so i wrote it to them. The staff was very prompt and efficient in replying. This hotel is located Otaru and not too far from Otaru city centre. The hotel itself... More

As a budget travaller, this hotel is too expensive, but with the regular price even on X'mas eve, we spent our luxury holiday there. We stayed in the "Hagi" room with private outdoor onsen. It's a bonus in the snowing Xmas. Room is very large. Dinner and breakfast included were average.. many dishes, tasted depends. Very comfortable room, especially the... More

I booked a room with an open-air bath but was disappointed with the room (Room Shirakaba). It is quite small, quite dark, and most of all, it just smells of cigarette smoke. I believe it is the ryokan's policy where you cannot choose the room; they will allocate you a room based on the category you pay for (with open-air... More

Room itself was spacious and toilets were clean, so no complaints there. The private onsen was a nice idea but it could be a little bigger. The meals however was my main grouch. It was served hurriedly and every dish at once. Most of the items were precooked and cold when they reached the table. One of the features of... More

I must say that the service is good, perhaps that's the way Japanese welcome their guests. I had a private Onsen in my room, Hagi. Excellent garden view. I will definitely book a room if I'm coming back to Otaru for Onsen. I believe this is one of the few excellent traditional Ryokan around.

The Ryokan is the best in Otaru. Service is top notch. The private onsen is beautifully decorated. Kaiseki dinner is sumptuous and truly reflect japanese meticulous attention to details. The overall environment is a true reflection of Japanese hospitality.

Just been to Korakuen last Friday. the first image is good that the location is convenience & with a big garden. unfortunately when we entered the room, we found the sink was broken & the water bottle was empty - this is unacceptable for a high-class onsen hotel. we stayed in a room with private outdoor onsen. however, it has... The best accommodation on this trip. No problem on car GPS using telephone number to get here. More than half of the property is garden. Full course Kaiseki and Onsen both indoor and outdoor is very relaxing. The staff service is first class. Will definitely visit again.
