Pretty close to Kami-kochi (40 mins. bus ride) and 2 hours from Matsumoto. For those who want to enjoy a nice onsen, Shirahone (means "white bone") is a nice alternative. My husband and I had a really wonderful 3 days at this ryokan. They upgraded our room without extra charge. The room was absolutely beautiful and looked out on a forest of green. Awanoyu is an interesting mix. The hotel itself is lovely - probably the best Japanese style rooms I've stayed in. they are clean, modern and stylish, with all the amenities you would expect in this price range. You will reach this hidden treasure after two hours drive from Matsumoto along the beautiful scenic mountain drive. The bus service is available in winter season.
