Traveled with a bus tour. Hotel has a kitsch European Alp decor. You can walk every where from there in town including to the castle. Basic English at the front desk which is all you need. Very good breakfast. Room was clean and slightly undersized for western standards but larger than other similar hotels in Japan I had stayed in.

Stay in a Japanese style room. It's huge and can sleep 6 if you'd like. At night they put on fresh sheets. The tatami is cleaned well and the futon is comfy. We asked for a room with a view and got a spectacular corner room with views of the Castle and the mountains. The room was very large. The bathroom was huge with large tub and shower set up for either Japanese style bathing or western shower. We stayed one night at the Kagetsu in two twin rooms. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Staff were courteous and spoke English well. I was able to change our booking over the phone. The bathouse was very good. It is too far to walk from the station with luggage.
