We followed the positive reviews of others to this ryokan – our first experience of the traditional Japanese inn-style accommodation, and delighted we did. Our room (#12) on the ground floor was spacious, with 3 separate elements – a small ‘entrance’ area and private toilet, our main room, and a separate space with wash basin/mirror, and luggage area with windows... I stayed at sumiyoshiya for 2 nights in winter. The location is only a short walk away from the markets and the samurai and geisha districts which is very handy. The host here goes above and beyond to make sure you have an amazing stay. The room was lovely and big and had a nice view out onto the garden.... More

Our host Mie spoke beautiful English, and was so kind to help us make my parent's 41st wedding anniversary really special. She was considerate, adaptable, and really responsive. The courtyard views were gorgeous, and the only possible improvement might be changing fluro light globes for warmer colours! Thanks again!

I love Sumiyoshiya. Location on a quiet street but convenient as a base to major attractions in Kanazawa. The famed Kenrokuen garden is just less than 15 min walk away and the Kanazawa castle is less than 300m from the ryokan. Meanwhile, the busy business district of Koribo and Omicho market is just less than 100m smacked behind the ryokan.... More

We are a french couple in our sixties and we make a round trip in Japan. We staied 2 nights in this ryokan and were dilighted, The localisation of the ryokan is perfect, close to the market, the Park, and not far from the Geisha area and the Samouraï area. The ryokan is very quiet and confortable and the japaneese... More

The ryokan is in mint condition, with neat Japanese garden adding a nice touch to breakfast view / ambiance. Easy access to main places of interest. Dinner meals provided by the hotel are strongly recommended. The best of all is the service. Top level Japanese hospitality. .

This ryokan is perfectly located for seeing the sites of Kanazawa and is very welcoming. It is not a high end, fancy ryokan, but the room we had was very nice and smelled softly of cedar walls and grass tatami mats. Bedding was very fresh. We had a fantastic dinner, well worth the additional price, and a very authentic Japanese... More

Warm and welcoming family-run ryokan. Convenient to Kenrokuen, Kanazawa castle and Omicho market. The room we stayed in had a private toilet which was really helpful. We opted to have breakfast during our entire stay and each morning we were presented with an immaculate tray of Japanese dishes consisting of rice, fish of the day, egg, fruit, veg, pickle and... Before reading any further, you should know this is not a superluxury Ryokan. So if you're looking for the height of refinement with exquisite food, rarified manners and priceless antiques, stop reading and look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a very nice place to stay, run by a kindhearted family that will do their best to make you comfortable... More

Situated a short walk from Kenrokuen, this ryokan is great value if your purpose for visiting Kanazawa is to view the celebrated garden. Also, a great western or Japanese breakfast is provided every morning. The directions to the ryokan provided on the website are pretty clear; it took me about 20 minutes to walk from the Kanazawa station. My main... More
