We stayed here one evening to give our grandson a real Japanese cultural experience. The Ryokan is in a nice location the staff is friendly but we only found one staff member who spoke very little English. When we went to dinner we had our own small room and waitress who unfortunately could not tell us what she was serving... More

An authentic japanese style inn where we stayed in Japanese rooms. We were personally welcomed to our room where tea and biscuits were offered. In the evening we enjoyed a typical Japanese meal with several little dishes, very tasty. We enjoyed the free spa onsen a lot. Breakfast was served insividually, the Japanese way. All of this in an atmosphere... More

The room was nice with the dining room in tatami with nice views of takayama. The dinner was better than taxable but still with space of improvement. Onsen full of Japanese that explained to me the right rules (you have to go inside completely naked). Nice staff

The cherry blossoms were out so it was a great time to be staying in Takayama in the mountains (apart from the daytime crowds going gaga over the blossom trees.) We emailed ahead and the Hoshokaku arranged for us to be collected from the station and we were whisked away to the inn. This is the full ryokan experience: shoes... More

I recently stayed at Hoshokaku and found the experience very poor. I had just one night in Takayama and I was there on business. My biggest complaint is that none of the staff spoke English, at all! Despite booking a twin share room with beds I was given a room with no bed and a futon was later set up,... More

We had never stayed in a Ryokan and were pleasantly surprised. Our room was modest with twin beds which isn't so fun when celebrating an anniversary but it was fine. The decor in our room was dated and the toilets are not comfortable for men. This may be different for rooms on the uppper level. We had our first experience... More

We visited on 31 January 2015, book for triple bed and stay for a night. Beautiful tatami room, delicious kaiseki set menu but the staff looks tired while clean up the restaurant as there is so noisy like in the Chinese restaurant. Don't bring big luggage, because you have to lift your luggage from front desk to the room as... More

We loved it here. We had an onsen in the room which is always a good start, and there was also a massage chair and bar with drinks to sample. We'd just arrived after an 11 hour flight and 4 hour drive so this was perfect! The staff were excellent, helping us to work out what we needed to wear... More

I'm going to start by saying that this was our first ryokan stay, so I have no comparison as some other contributors do. That said, we enjoyed everything about our stay here. The shuttle provided for the train station is convenient, the staff treated us as honored guests, were polite and did their best to assist us with our needs.... More

Hoshokaku is a very nice ryokan, but is unremarkable for the price. I paid 19k¥/person for two people on a Sunday night. The location is nice, right up the hill from Takayama's old town. The service was as I would expect from a ryokan in this price range (that is, very professional and welcoming). The food was good, but not... More
