I'm going to start by saying that this was our first ryokan stay, so I have no comparison as some other contributors do. That said, we enjoyed everything about our stay here. The shuttle provided for the train station is convenient, the staff treated us as honored guests, were polite and did their best to assist us with our needs.... More

Hoshokaku is a very nice ryokan, but is unremarkable for the price. I paid 19k¥/person for two people on a Sunday night. The location is nice, right up the hill from Takayama's old town. The service was as I would expect from a ryokan in this price range (that is, very professional and welcoming). The food was good, but not... More

This hotel is within walking distance to Miyagawa Morning Market, Old Public Houses and famous Kitchen Hida restaurant, however, the staircase which next to hotel and connected to the town is very steep so must walk with care especially during raining day. This hotel has outdoor private onsen on top floor for hotel guests to use with a charge. But... More

A truly wonderful experience from start to finish. Even though we only stayed here 1 night, in a Japanese room with in - room onsen, the experience came with 2 meals (dinner and breakfast) which was nothing short of amazing. Pluses: Service - on arrival at Takayama station, we called the ryokan and they had a shuttle come by the... More

We stayed here for two nights in mid April. 2 night end Feb, which was in winter, and selected the room with private hot-tub. Upon arrival we called up from the Takayama train station and were picked up by the hotel bus and driven to the ryokan (about a 5 minute drive). We were greeted politely and warmly at reception... Picked up by the very obliging owner in an elderly minibus after a very late evening train because of a typhoon, a meal was nevertheless ready and waiting after check in. The dining area is split into tiny booths, with drapes across the entrance in the Japanese fashion. Food was very good, but we were to taste better in other... More

This immaculate ryokan, on a hill overlooking charming Takayama, was an unforgettable highlight of our short trip to Japan. The hotel is maintained spotlessly throughout: shoes are handed to the concierge upon entry. The building is a modernised version of the traditional Japanese ryokan, and is the complete opposite of a Western hotel. Rooms are simple: no TV, but private... More

We booked Hoshokaku through JTB with our train tickets. We chose it for its onsen and because you don't dine in the room. We preferred dining in a restaurant setting. Upon arrival, we were greeted in the full Japanese style -- respect and grace. Shoes off, straight to the room. Tour of the room and tea service was elegant, short... More

We really enjoyed our stay at Hoshokaku. The location is excellent and close to the famous bridge, temple market and old town. While expensive, I think it's good value when you consider the meals that are included. Our room was very comfortable with amenities such as a free mini-bar, coffee machine and excellent toiletries. We were on the 5th (top)... More
