This was my first ryokan experience and it was fabulous - charming owner/hostess, friendly helpful staff, larger room than anticipated, great variety of dishes for dinner and breakfast graciously served. Kimonos were provided for both meals. Sleeping on a futon was actually comfortable. The common areas are furnished with beautiful antiques. The location is perfect for walking from the station... This was our 1st experience staying in a Ryokan & we were very impressed. Sleeping on the floor was a real experience . Very well setup & staff were absolutely gorgeous & so helpful. We dressed in Kimonos for dinner & were shown the correct way to dress in them. The room was a big room & very clean &... More

One of three ryokan we stayed at during holiday; easy 10 minute walk from train station. Good sized room. Immaculate and clean. Pillow excellent which was unexpected as size of a cushion and filled with some sort of beads (?). Good onsen. Food okay but missed vegetarian pre-order. Small but fine onsen with everything you need. Cheerful and friendly place.... More

This was our second stay in a Ryoken which was to consist of two nights. From the minute you walk in the door you are met with a very warm welcome by the owner, who is an extraordinary and very personable lady. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk (with suitcases) from the railway and bus station. It is... More

It was strange to eat and sleep in the same room (yes I can afford a one bedroom flat in Milan where I live). Given that the waitresses were so concentrated and the owner lady so kind that I enjoyed it. Only disappointed by the food that was not so great

An incredible experience. That was our second ryokan in Japan, and I want to recommend the experience of stay on one of these. Tanabe has a paceful onsen for relax, the personal are extremely kindly and her owner, Akiko, is an extraordinary, funny and very good woman. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast was awesome if you love japanese cuisine and... More

We stayed in Tanabe for 2 nights and the whole experience was amazing, the room and it's every details, the greeting, the spring bath, the service and its location. We chose Tanabe for its very traditional style and it didn't disappoint us. It keeps all the details of an old Japanese house, in wood mainly and managed by an old... More

Ryokan Tanabe is about a 10 minute walk from the station ..... And the walk to the Ryokan is lovely - right through the old town. We only stayed for the one night as this was our stop off on the way to Shirakawa-go but we wished we could have stayed longer. We got such a warm welcome when we... More

The location is excellent, involving an easy walk from the train station and to Takayama attractions. Akiko Tanabe and the entire staff were gracious and helpful, and the rooms were serene and attractive. For ryokan first-timers, which I was, I will pass on reservation tips from my travel planner that served me well. She recommended a two-night stay with dinner... More

Warm, friendly and cosy. It feels nice to walk around in kimono and slippers while using the "onsen"(hot spring bath) and having breakfast and dinner served in our room. The food was plentiful and I must recommend the massage! We both had a massage which is given in the room, as well, on the beds. I've never tried anything like... More
