It was my first Ryokan experience and it was positive, although one needs to enjoy Japanese food (which we are not) to really enjoy the place. They serve very large dinner and impressive dinner, but we had eaten only small part of it (due to our taste). The place is well organized and the rooms are large. The service is... More

It is difficult to separate out my opinion of this particular ryokan from my opinion of a ryokan in general. My only previous experience of a ryokan was a luxury ryokan near Matsumoto. The welcome and check-in were quick and friendly. The lady who owns the ryokan was very helpful and spoke adequate English. Our room, the top level in... More

This offers a good roykan experience for a town, and includes a great traditional kaiseki meal. The staff all seem to be older ladies who are a bit eccentric, and we did visit hotels with onsen with better settings during our trip to Japan, but for the price we thought this offered a reasonable deal. We also liked Takayama itself... More

We were made very welcome by everyone, and because staying in a ryokan was all new to us we given guidance on the do's and dont's in a friendly and helpful way. Our room was spacious and authentically Japanese, the kaiseki dinner was amazing , and the onsen was a unique experience for Western travellers. My husband was unwell during... More

We enjoyed our stay very much. Located a short walk from JR Takayama station, and a block from the old parts of town, right across the river. Staff were lovely and hard working. The lobby area had a couple of sitting areas which afforded the guest a taste of traditional Japanese accommodations. The room was decent but the view was... More

Well situated - an amazing experience - the staff are extremely friendly and went above and beyond to provide for a vegetarian meal. Very central in Takayama, and very easy to walk to most the main old streets that one would want to see in Takayama. The dinners are HUGE - but very authentic!!! Only downer really was the poor... Located just a few minutes walk from the station in one direction and the old town in the other this Ryokan offers a traditional stay with very friendly staff. The room was spacious and the balcony area with more western style seating and drinks making facilities was a bonus but of course the experience of eating at the low table... More

it was our first experience in a Japanese style hotel and it was great. We were fussed over and given our meals in our own room. The disadvantage is that the room has to be prepared for meals and for the night. Bonus is the Japanese style bath in the premise. Location is excellent, just a short walk from the... More

Had the pleasure of spending two nights at Ryokan Tanabe last week on a visit to Takayama.Beautiful, traditional style rooms which were quite spacious and well appointed. From the moment you enter you experience true Japanese hospitality.Take your shoes off at the front door, slip on the provided slippers, choose a gorgeous kimono/yukata and off to your room where you are served green tea... This was our first stay in a Ryokan and it truly was a great experience. We had a traditional style room and breakfast. If you don't like sleeping on the floor, this is not the room for you. You do sleep on a tatami floor and futon and a bean filled small pillow. The onsen was fabulous after a long... More
