Nice ryokan with good service. Abt 7 mins walk from Takayama station. Many restaurants nearby too. Near to old town and market. Only thing is the public bath a little small. But overall , quite a nice place with nice service..

Choosing a ryokan in Takayama can be hard. There are so many options, and having stayed at upper-end ryokans in Japan, we weren't quite sure (having extensively read the reviews of several ryokans in the area) what to expect. What singled Ryokan Tanabe for us was: - The availability of a private toilet and shower in the new wing, Yubokuan.... More

We stayed at this lovely guesthouse for several nights. Our welcome was warm and the room comfortable and roomy. The food provided breakfast and dinner, was delicious and plentiful. There was a free coffee machine in foyer for guests, and it was an easy walk from train station and to most of the city's attractions.

This was a superb experience. From the minute we arrived at the front door, we were made most welcome. Our room was perfect with its en-suite bathroom, beautiful living room and cleanliness. We stayed two nights and enjoyed kaiseki meals of amazing quality. There is coffee available on a self service basis near reception which we took full advantage of.... More

I would not ask more about the service at any hotel. Since the very first time I went in until the moment the taxi left the front door, I experienced the best hospitality. If you are looking for japanese gastronomy, don't miss the delicious dinner. The public bathroom is a great bet as well. Very different of western style. The... More

If you can stay more than one night in Takayama, do it. We didn't know better. This is a traditional ryokan. You leave your shoes at the front entrance. You sleep on the tatami mat floor (with a down pillow pad under you of course). Very spacious room for traditional ryokan. Price is significantly more than traditional hotels. But its... More

My husband, my father and I were looking for a few days in a small mountain town in a Ryokan, as a break from the 3 weeks of sight-seeing and visiting relatives in Kyoto & Tokyo. I found this place on-line and made a reservation, hoping for the best. And it was the best! It was absolutely charming, professionally run,... More

There is nothing much to complain about, with Ryokan Tanabe. The rooms are beautifully done up, the service is excellent and the food (dinner and breakfast served in the room) was delicious. Just little things here and there that could have made our stay more memorable. First, its location on a main street of Takayama is not that charming. Every... More

Visited Takayama in December with my husband and daughter and stayed in this lovely family-run ryokan. Location is good - a short walk from the train station, close to restaurants and shops with a 24-hr convenience store next door, and close to the major attractions in Takayama. We stayed in a room at the new wing - Yubokuan. The room... More

We, a party of 8 pax had a wonderful 3 nights stay in December and would highly recommend it. The owner, Akikosan and her staff are all very friendly and helpful. The ryokan is clean and the location is excellent. Takayama is so beautiful in the winter with plenty of snow and we will certainly be back and will stay... More
