We stayed at Tanabe Ryokan in Sept 2011, it was our first visit to Takayama (and to Japan) and we fell in love with the town. If you are considering visiting Takayama I would urge you to do so, it is a beautiful place. Tanabe-san keeps a fantastic ryokan, it is in a very central location, very close to the... More

This place makes you feel the traditional side of Japan thanks to the extremely polite old Japanese women who welcome guests, the furniture, the décor design, the wood structure, the floor made of tatami and the cleanliness. Staying at this place is a good commplement to a visit to Takayama. If you arrive by train, you can easily walk from... More

We spent three days at the Tanabe Ryokan. According to the very friendly proprietress, the oldest building has been a hotel for 80 years; we stayed in a more modern wing which was splendidly clean and well-appointed (in the context of the traditional sparse tatami-floored room design.) The location in the center of town, a few blocks from the historic... More

We had a beautifully decorated traditional style room with a well disguised en suite bathroom (although we used the onsen more in the end). Meals were served in the room (worth bearing in mind that even though you agree to have dinner at 7pm, the lovely lady comes to prepare the table and so on about 10-15 mins before so... More

Ryokan Tanabe exceeded every expectation. Perfect location, charming, gentle service, classic room w every amenity, delicious keiseki style breakfast and dinner plus wifi in the lounge. But perhaps my favourite thing was the Onsen. Just delightful and I never saw another soul. I also need to mention that Takayama offers Hida Beef. I own a restaurant that serves mostly beef... More

The hotel itself is around a 10 minute walk from the bus/train station (exit bus station, go left to the lights then turn right go down for ~200m and you're there) Along the way (around 3/4 of the way) there is a nice beef grill restaurant behind a butcher (some of the other reviews for this restaurant are a little... We booked 1 Yuubokuan mingeifu room for all 5 of us (4 adults and 1 toddler). We've got private wooden bath with garden view - just like having private onsen. Separated bath, toilet and wash basin. They even have small wash basin in the toilet, great! The staff who took care of us treated us like an aunty to her... More

I loved the room I was in (as a solo traveler), which was beautiful and spacious, with a private bath and pleasant sitting room. The service was absolutely excellent, with wonderful food. The public baths are lovely, and the womens' has a couple of open-air tubs as well as a large indoor tub. Staff and owner alike were very friendly... More

Since this was our first visit to Japan and as we'd heard about ryokans for many years, we felt compelled to experience staying in one. And we couldn't have found a finer one than Tanabe Ryokan. However, staying in a ryokan is an opportunity to observe and to participate in an extremely personal component of local life. This is a... More

This ryokan was a really nice experience in the beautiful town of Takayama. We arrived via taxi from the train station. It was a short ride, not expensive. Too hot for us to walk with our bags. We were met by Akiko the energetic elder owner of this ryokan. Akiko is so happy to help all her guests see and... More
