We chose Takayama as the place for our ryokan experience during a recent holiday in Japan. It was the best of everything I remember about ryokan when I lived in Japan 25 years ago. The hostess and staff were incredibly welcoming and able to take us earlier than the advertised check-in time. The hostess speaks English and will correspond with... More

My wife and I came here for a 3day/2night visit. We wanted to see a smaller town in Japan and get a more cultural experience than we could find in Kyoto and Tokyo. Ryokan Tanabe is a traditional ryokan: tatami mat rooms, sleep on (quite comfortable) sleeping pads on the floor, wear slippers and use Japanese baths (in-room for premium... More

Wonderful combination of hospitality, authentic tasty food & friendly helpful staff. Perfectly located near the old town and morning market. The Hotel Onsen (Traditional baths) are a wonderful way to start and end the day. Cheaper accommodation is available however the overall Tanabe experience is excellent value.

With thanks to all at Tanabe Ryokan for making our first ryokan experience a wonderful experience. Location is perfect, just 10 mins walk from the JR Station, and another 10 into the historical and picturesque town centre. The rooms are immaculate, cuisine outstanding and onsen just perfect for relaxing in. A wonderful unique stay.

I can't say enough about our experience at Ryokan Tanabe. Akiko Tanabe and everyone at the property made us feel at home as soon as we arrived and this level of service continued throughout our stay. Our room was immaculate and the atmosphere of the place was convivial and restful at the same time. Everyone there was so helpful and... More

I stayed in a Yobokuan room with wooden bath and spot garden and it was lovely. really clean and beautifully appointed. the staff were so friendly and helpful. the food was traditional Japanese food for breakfast and evening meal. The ryokan is ~ 7 minutes walk from Takayama station and about 2 minutes walk to the old town so it... More

Located 10 minutes from JR in Takayama, a pearl in Gifu Prefecture on the Japanese Alps. The Ryokan is a family run, friendly and competent staff, rooms quite large in traditional style. Upon arrival make you choose your yukata and wear it just starts to relax and feel like a real Japanese. It has two onsen separated for men and... More

Apart from the good location, structure, room (we were lucky to get a room at the newly built area), onsen, what we found exceptional was the service. Ms. Tanabe, the owner of the ryokan, is THE BEST HOST. Thanks to her help and guidance, our trip to the next destination went very smooth. She is always available, very helpful, speaks... More

As a family of four we spent two nights in this beautiful and interesting town of Takayama. this ryokan is a few minutes from the main sights, and a few minutes only from the station. The staff are kind, passionate, knowlegeable and authentically warm and welcoming. The onsen is delightful, the reception area welcoming and peaceful. The highlight was not... More

On the plus side good location, fresh, clean. Parking availability. Nice welcoming. In contrast to other ryokans we stayed at, toilet and shower was included with the room. On the down side extremely expensive compared to other similar ryokans in the same area without any real justification (e. g. food, rooms, overall impression). Feels more like a hotel complex and...
