We stayed here on the recommendation of our travel agent for the traditional inn experience. This was our first traditional experience. For the traditional experience we give it 5 stars. The owners are absolutely delightful and the food is excellent. However, this experience was not for us and following our stay we cancelled our other Ryokan bookings. Why? Rooms are... More

Good: Adored the older lady host that greeted us upon arrival and continued to provide EXCEPTIONAL customer relation service throughout our stay regardless of language barrier. She reminded us of grandmas in the Studio Ghibli Movies and was such a treat to interact with. The rooms had heater units that was a blessing as it was pretty cold even during... More

Such a beautiful ryokan in a great location. Our hosts were fantastic and hugely welcoming. I would recommend this place to anyone. We stayed 4 nights on a recent trip to Japan and this was by far the most authentic ryokan we stayed in. The ryokan is well placed to see Takayama and the walk to the bus station is... More

Since I considered the experience of staying in a traditional ryokan a "must" of my travel in Japan, I wasted no chance in booking at Sumiyoshi Ryokan when I saw a bargain deal for the date I was looking for. The ryokan is located about fifteen minutes on foot from Takayama station, in a quiet side street near Yayoi Bashi... More

Our family (2 adults and 2 kids aged 10 and 7) just spent 4 nights in this ryokan. We really enjoyed staying at this place which is ideally located next to the river in Takayama and just a little 10 minute walk away from the train and the bus stations from where one can discover the surroundings of Takayama. The... More

We stayed in this Ryokan as base to explore the region and had an unforgettable experience. The owners, even though speaking just a rudimentary english, are super-friendly and eager to assist you in each and every thing you might need. The ryokan is a kind of little personal museum with old things displayed in the common areas, the rooms and... More

We ended nearly a month in Japan with 4 nights at this terrific traditional ryokan on the river in Takayama. The hosts are lovely, the food is excellent, the view is charming, and the room we had is comfortable. And the location is good, too! Our only issue was with old knees getting up and down off the futons -... More

What a lovely place!! First time in a ryokan and really overwhelmed by the warmth and friendliness of the hosts. I have both breakfast and dinner served during the stay and it was fabulous, with each dinner almost kaiseki-like, every evening with starters, cold dishes, sashimi, tempura then finished with meat cooked in a hot pot on the spot. The... More

This is an authentic ryokan, situated in a great location within the centre of Takayama. The building is from 1912 but there has been some substantial conversion to accommodate several mod cons without spoiling the character of the property. We stayed in the bigger room that has en suite facilities and if this is available you should pay a little... More

We stayed here in September 2014 for two nights. It was a wonderful traditional ryokan experience. The building itself is 100 years old. When we booked I checked if they could cater for my gluten free diet as I am coeliac, and they surpassed themselves on this. (I actually was turned down at another ryokan because of my dietary needs!)... More
