This is an authentic ryokan, situated in a great location within the centre of Tsumago. The building is from 1912 but there has been some substantial conversion to accommodate several mod cons without spoiling the character of the property. We stayed in the bigger room that has en suite facilities and if this is available you should pay a little... More

Stayed two evenings and wish we had budgeted for more. The dinner and breakfast were traditional Japanese meals, and some of the best food I've ever had - and never ending! Futons laid out at night while you are at dinner - very comfortable, however. Private onsens are a plus.

We came to Takayama on a whim. We wanted a ryokan experience and after some research we settled on Sumiyoshi Ryokan. The other TA reviews were right - this place is great! We got the room with the private toilet and shower. It's upstairs and has a great view of the river. The place itself is full of charm and... More

Spent two wonderful nights here over Christmas 2014. Takayama is a great place to visit anyway but staying here took the experience to a new level and is one we will never forget. Everything about the accommodation was perfect and topped off by the beautiful family that own and run the Ryokan. Thank-you for giving us such a great memory.

From greeting to farewell you feel like you've joined the family. Although no English is spoken this only reinforces the feeling of "Japaneseness" Simply wonderful food, baths, and atmosphere all the ingredients for great ryokan experience.

We stayed here for just one night, having spent the previous night at another hotel elsewhere in Takayama, but wish we had been able to stay for longer. The couple that run the hotel are supremely polite and overwhelmingly friendly (albeit in their own quirky Japanese way). The communal hot baths (onsen) were lovely and the breakfast very good too... We booked for two nights stay (one with 2 meals, and one just to accomodation) via email. Ryokan owner Mr.Minami accepted and replied to our email very timely. And best of all, we weren't asked to pay deposit up front because that will be difficult for us to process. We arrived later than expected, but our room is ready and... More

Writing this review while on the train to Nagoya from Takayama. We stayed 2 nights at this delightful Ryokan and as per what the other reviewers mentioned, it is set in a old house but everything was fully functional. We stayed in the family room with attached bathroom but used the common bath room for our Onsen experience. It was... More

What a delightful place to stay.... This is an old Japanese house full of treasures.... Don't expect en suites and sofas!!!! What you do get is the real traditional way of doing things. A huge suite of beautifully spare rooms.... Your own dining area for dinner and breakfasts.... We even had a terrace with a river view.... The shower room... More
