This was my first trip to Japan, so I wanted to stay at a traditional ryokan. I am so glad I stayed at Sumiyoshi Ryokan rather than at one of the warehouse-style hotels near the train station that were about the same price. The owners were extremely friendly, especially Sumiko, the co-owner, I assume. She was very sincere and jolly,... More

We absolutely fell in love with this ryokan! We stayed two nights and just loved it! The food is amazing. We arrived a bit before the posted check in, and were taken right up to our room. We had forwarded our luggage ahead to this location, and it was already in our room when we arrived. The room overlooked the... More

We stayed two nights at the Sumiyoshi and loved every minute. If you are looking for the definitive Japanese Ryokan experience, this is it! Family owned, the service is absolutely impeccable, the Japanese breakfast is a must, served by a charming elderly Japanese lady who is one of the owners, we were blown away by the attention & detail that... Like all the reviews say, the couple who run the place are really friendly and funny. Feels like a Japanese style B and B and Ida very homely experience different than the other ryokans we stayed in. Location is good in between the Main Street and the main temple walking area. About 15 mins walk with bags from train, it's... More

We stayed here for 2 night with a 9 year old. We had a huge room divided into 3 parts. We were allowed to check in early, were greeted with macha tea. The owner was really nice to our 9 year old and gave her traditional outfit. Breakfast was very tasty. Hotel is a little hard to find when coming... More

My husband and I spent two nights here in route to Kyoto. Extremely friendly husband-and-wife team who run the Ryokan, offering both Western and Japanese breakfast, and a traditional Japanese dinner. They were able to accommodate my Pescatarian diet. They're also helpful with maps and happenings in Takayama. Although they spoke very little English, we were able to communicate. During... More

We stayed here on the recommendation of our travel agent for the traditional inn experience. This was our first traditional experience. For the traditional experience we give it 5 stars. The owners are absolutely delightful and the food is excellent. However, this experience was not for us and following our stay we cancelled our other Ryokan bookings. Why? Rooms are... More

Good: Adored the older lady host that greeted us upon arrival and continued to provide EXCEPTIONAL customer relation service throughout our stay regardless of language barrier. She reminded us of grandmas in the Studio Ghibli Movies and was such a treat to interact with. The rooms had heater units that was a blessing as it was pretty cold even during... More

Such a beautiful ryokan in a great location. Our hosts were fantastic and hugely welcoming. I would recommend this place to anyone. We stayed 4 nights on a recent trip to Japan and this was by far the most authentic ryokan we stayed in. The ryokan is well placed to see Takayama and the walk to the bus station is... More

Since I considered the experience of staying in a traditional ryokan a "must" of my travel in Japan, I wasted no chance in booking at Sumiyoshi Ryokan when I saw a bargain deal for the date I was looking for. The ryokan is located about fifteen minutes on foot from Takayama station, in a quiet side street near Yayoi Bashi... More
