The ryokan is situated right next to the river in central Takayama near the Sanmachi traditional street and the morning market. I was fortunate to be able to check in immediately and was prompted guided around the ryokan. There was a welcome matcha tea served hot with fresh confectionery. Everywhere in the ryokan was spotless and the room was comfortable,... More

The ryokan is located at a strategic location, just opposite to the morning market &my favourite karaage place. The room is quite big & dinner /breakfast are served in your room. Staffs are super friendly and both dinner & breakfast are massive feast, but all of them were very yummy. The owner is really nice, when we're checking out, he... More

Found this ryokan by chance and I'm so glad that we stayed there for 2 nights rather than 1 night like most people. With the 2 nights stay, we had a chance to experience the beauty of the area, the hospitality of the owners and staff. When we arrived, the mama (I called her mama as she reminds me of my... More

We wanted to try an affordable Ryokan experience, and this far exceeded all our expectations. We had a lovely room with private toilet. The room was overlooking the river. The onsen is shared but cleaned after each use and really large so no need for your own bathroom. The absolute highlight was the in room dining ! So delicious. We... More

We had a wonderful time in Takayama, arriving in time for the fall festival. The Ryokans and hotels were all extremely busy and yet we felt like the service we got at Sumiyoshi was exactly the same as we would have expected any other time. Our host was a wonderfully energetic lady who was clearly proud of her Ryokan. She... More

A traditional Japanese inn opposite the morning market in Takayama across a river. We had a very comfortable room with a little annexe complete with tatami mats and warm futons. We were welcomed warmly by the owner and his wife who was such a jovial polite little lady. Everything was so clean. Breakfast and dinner were excellent. The Japanese turn food... More

This is one of the best ryokan stays I have experienced - from hospitable and cheerful hosts to clean / private family onsen to sumptuous meals. The shared toilet facilities turned out to be a non-issue as they are always accessible and well maintained. The Japanese dinner and breakfast are awesome. Even though we stayed 3 nights, the dishes are... More

This place was just delightful. We arrived only half an hour before curfew (11pm) and we were still greeted by a lovely old man who insisted on taking our cases (I may have packed lighter if i'd have known that was to happen......... maybe) We were then told to take off our shoes - as per normal- and given an... We stayed here for 1 night on our honeymoon. They have rooms facing the river however they were all booked. Nonetheless, the room is spacious and the shared baths (which you have lock it to make it private) face the river. Upon arriving we were greeted by this cute granny who speaks minimal English but enough to understand. She gave... More

We stayed there in Nov 2015 for 2 nights. We had a beautiful room facing the river. The rooms are huge and the futon beds are so comfortable. We were served by this lovely "granny" and she is so adorable! :) The food is fantastic! Try the Japanese breakfast - they served such good miso with rice. :) We also... More
