We spent two nights in this very-well located and charming ryokan. We had a room upstairs with a nice view on the river. It is only about 10/15min by walk from the train station and the city centre. We were warmly welcomed by the owners, who were doing their best to make our stay perfect. They even proposed to wash... More

This was my third visit to Takayama, and spending a night or two in a ryokan in this quaint but touristy little town is something that should be high on anyone's "must do" list. We stayed at Sumiyoshi Ryokan in January 2014, as 2 adults and 3 children, and it was a wonderful experience. Firstly, the location. Located on the... More

This is our second stay here and the service, accommodations, staff and especially the food were everything that we remembered and more, especially the food, which can be both breakfast and dinner. A relatively short walk from the train station and easy to find (if you need help there is very friendly staff at the train station tourist office). The... More

We stayed there one night and were generally very satisfied. Perfect location and very sweet and helpful staff. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a genuine ryokan experience in Takayama!

We stayed here to experience a ryokan - we weren't disappointed. It was a 15-min walk from the train station and pretty easy to find. Warm people ran it - make sure you get a brekky or dinner served in your room - so much fun to watch! Like most in Japan, the staff take their job seriously and are... More

My boyfriend and I just enjoyed 3 wonderful nights at Sumiyoshi. The stay in the traditional ryokan is sure to be one of our trip highlights. The food delivered to our room was great, the beds were comfy and the view out to the river just topped it off! The staff were so friendly that I was actually sad to... More

Sumiyoshi Ryokan is a wonderful and unique place to stay. Our room overlooked the River across from the Morning Market with a nice seating area to take that in. The dinner and breakfasts here are excellent but the personal service is what makes the place so special. We were welcomed with traditional clothing and tea, our room was transformed into... More

This is a 100 years old, family run Inn, conveniently located in Takayama. Although maybe a short 10-15 minute walk from the Station, we took a taxi. This turned out to be very helpful as the Inn is in a small side street but beautifully situated along the Miyagawa River and Morning Market Place. The proprietors, Minami's, are very gracious... Climbing by train up to Takayama the landscape changed from a small amount of covering of snow to a huge amount! Our walk from the station to Sumiyoshi took about 20mins and is easy to find. The traditions of the Ryokan start at the entrance with outdoor shoes being removed. We are greeted by the petite very smiley lady of... More
