Warm welcome to this minshuka by the owner, Keiko. The guesthouse has traditional tatame rooms, sleeping on a comfortable futon. It has seperate male and female common bath, irori fireplace and serves meals, enabling its guests to experience a bit of Japanese life. It's nice as there we're a mix of Japanese and guests of other nationalities. Very good value... More

My friend and I travelled for the autumn festival. The minshuku was clean and well kept. One of the staff spoke a reasonable amount of English. The location was about 7 minute walk to the train/bus station (centre of town), with bike hire at the larger hotel across the road. There was breakfast and dinner included on one night/morning (breakfast... More

This was our first visit to Takayama and we enjoyed it immensely. However, this was not our first stay at a traditional Japanese inn and we were disappointed that previous high standards were absent here. For example, at the entrance there were no slippers available for guests, nor were they available in the rooms. Upon the customary removal of shoes... More

Sosuke was not initially my choice for accomodations in Takayama, but in talking to an acquaintance of mine (who has written several books on Japanese history), I was persuaded to try Sosuke out. I was warned that it would not feel like staying in a hotel and that the place was not necessarily luxurious, but he also said it would... More

We paid extra as we stayed during Takayama Festival. Dinner was very good but I wish they let me know that I had a choice of Western style or Japanese style breakfast. Instead they assumed that we wanted Japanese style. It was boring and tasteless and definitely less than what I expected - without coffee!! We had to order a... More

We stayed in Sosuke for a night to have a taste if ryokan experience. It is within easy access from the Takayama Train Station (10mins walk with bulky luggage). Turn right at the station and walk to the end of a T junction, turn right and cross a short bridge. Continue walking till you walk past the 2nd Traffic Junction,... More

This was our first Minshuku on our trip so the small rooms and limited facilities did not rate as highly as the Ryokans we had stayed in. Sleep quality was not great as there is noise from other guests moving around and the road outside. The rooms were clean and comfortable and all the facilities shared - there are two... More

We stayed at Sosuke in January during a very cold winter. We had intended to stay only one night, but felt so comfortable we decided to stay another night. The hostess was so polite that she didn't let on until later that as they hadn't any other bookings for the second night, they'd intended to have a much-needed day off.... More

We stayed with our two kids, it's a beautiful place. Not a long walk from the JR station inside are all the comforts you'd expect from a traditional Japanese style inn. Our rooms were very clean and the staff so helpful in showing us where everything was. The onsen is small but very welcoming especially when it's cold. The meals... More

Irori Sosuke This was a good value place ....quite traditional I thought. The draws both Japanese and western travelers. The age profile is older. Curfew time is 11 pm, which is perfectly ok as there is not much to do after the sun sets in this sleepy town, which is en route to shirakawa and the Japanese alps. Dinner at... More
