The place has just been open for a few years so still in a very good state of repair. Rooms a little small but very well furnished. I had to take a little video of the room before I used mine as it was so elegantly prepared, with the daily sweet of the day. You even have to take your... More

We've been there last week for 高山祭 (Takayama Spring Festival). And it's the best trip ever. The hotel reception communicate well in English. We've got Smoking Room (but we both don't smoke) ,because the hotel was fully booked. After we checked in, We have to put our shoes in the lockers. Our room (high Floor) was so lovely in Japanese... You take off your shoes before entering this hotel because the floor of the public areas and rooms is lined with tatami mats. Rooms were comfortable and typically smaller than those in the west. The baths on the top floor are well designed and easy to use for those unaccustomed to Japanese baths. Location next to the train station and... More

Takayama is a pretty town filled with rustic charm. We are so happy we managed to book a one night stay at this hotel. This is a traditional Japanese hotel where you can wear the Japanese robes and slippers in the entire hotel. The room is very spacious and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed the private onsen as well. The staff... More

We stayed for just 2 nights as part of a 9 day family trip, but would have stayed longer if we could have. The room was lovely and the futon-on- foam beds were very comfortable, and negotiable for my 75 year old mother who recently had a knee replacement. We found the onsen to be beautiful and not at all... More

Hotel staff is friendly and helpful, can communicate with English. The hotel has a public and 3 private onsens, waiting time for the private onsen is about 10 minutes. There is free noodle supply between 10:30 - 11:30. Breakfast is average. The only drawback is no wifi in the room. About 5 mins walk, you can find some restaurants, but... More

This hotel is a stone throw away from the train station. Tips : once you exit from the train station, turn LEFT and 5 minutes walk later, the brown tall building is the one! Everything is traditional! ...and get a taste of living like the locals. You can walk around in Japanese pajamas provided by the hotel....yea even at the... More

Roughly 5 minutes walk from the train station (turn left out of station) so very convenient, particularly if you need to get an early morning train. It doesn't look particularly Japanese from the outside except the Entrance. You have to remove your shoes beyond Reception and place them in your own lockable shoe locker (numbered in Japanese so a nice... More

A traditional Japanese style hotel about a 5 minute walk from the station so very conveniently located for most things. Staff are really helpful and friendly especially if you test out the couple of Japanese words you've mastered. Rooms are fine, floors covered in Tatami mats so no shoes allowed. We opted for a western style room on the 12th... More

Takayama Ouan is but a short stroll from the station, and from a distance it looks like any commercial building in an unatractive part of the town. The recption area helps dispel this impression and after removing ones shoes and entering the bedroom, the faux Japanese decor has charm. Soon the inconvenience of sleeping and sitting on the floor becomes... More
