It was a great surprise! Loved the concept of a 'shoe less' hotel, which makes total sense when in a traditional Japanese home. The half-board is a must as the meals are served to perfection in private rooms. Staff is extremely polite and well trained, with some of them speaking English very well. During the meals they are glad to... More

Takayama is a mountain vacation spot principally for the Japanese as well as foreign visitors. They demand a level of service, quality and finish that I have not found in western hotels. They deliver this experience with the highest excellence at Hotel Hanaoughi. And it is delivered so faultlessly, with a grace and without obligation they almost make you feel... More

This was our first time in a ryokan (though we also did a temple stay in Koyasan which was a similar experience) and we were not impressed, especially for the price of over $600/night. Overall, we found the staff to be very polite and attentive, but we never felt welcomed there. The ryokan is not central and there is a... More

This experience is really worthwhile. Upon arrival you are greeted by a staff member that will follow you throughout your stay. You are "forced" to wear a kimono already from the hall and to leave your shoes. Nice and big "onseng" available within the hotel, there is also a hot water bath for relaxing near the entrance hall. Our room... More

Lately we have become enamoured with trying out ryokans in Japan. Indeed there are thousands of pages dedicated to the experiences travellers have with ryokans all over Japan. Basically a ryokan is a traditional Japanese Inn, usually small but some are very large. The usual rooms are tatami based but of late many western style hybrid rooms have become commonplace.... More

If you want to experience some of the best service and culture Japan has to offer, I recommend staying here. It's not cheap, but this kind of experience is so very worth it - at least for 1 night. I stayed here a couple of weeks ago with a couple family members from out of town. I live in Japan... More

We were in Takayama for the Autumn Festival and stayed in the hotel for two nights. I am sure I had not paid the rates for a suite but got a huge one offered to us. The staff are excellent, the food was great and one could not find even the slightest flaw in this hotel. Weather on the 9th... More

Perfect hotel / ryokan. Excelent room (one of the best ever) with private onsen and bathroom. Clean, delicate and simple. Great food, in huge quantity and great quality (for the dinner option, chose shabu-shabu with the famous hida beef). Excelent staff, sympathetic, cordial and efficient. Most of the staff speak English, at least the fundamentals. Ramen and common onsen are... More

We were on a ryokan sampling trip, and Hidatei Hanaougi did not disappoint. This was in stark contrast to my first ryokan stay a few years ago where the inn's one indoor bath was on their top floor overlooking other rooftops, totally uninviting. It was an important learning point for us in choosing onsen ryokans. Hanaogi's public baths, separate ones... More
