I stayed with 3 boys aged 3, 11 and 13 for 1 night at the end of our Takayama trip. The hotel itself is off the main sights but it does have pretty and peaceful grounds. I stayed in room 302 and couldn't fault it. The message chair and heated tables were bonus. The outdoor public onsen was fabulous. As... More

It is a bit far away from major attractions, about 7 minutes by taxi. It is a traditional "shoe-less" hotel completely covered by tatami. The hotel is decorated in traditional style which is beautiful and relaxing. Rooms are spacious and clean, with a small garden view. The dinner and breakfast are delicious. The onsen is good. Service is excellent. Most... More

Hidatei Hanaougi is truely beautiful and peaceful. The typical Japanese hospitality is second to none. I cannot praise highly enough of this place. The only regret I had is booking a night at Hidatei Hanaougi. I should have stayed here for at least 2 nights. First of all, upon arriving at Takayama train station, the bus driver will be holding... We stayed at the Hidatei for 2 nights and we really enjoyed our stay. The premises is very clean, lovely and with great service. We had two different meals on each night. The Hida beef that they served on the second night was plentiful and really good. The service is top notch and everyone is very helpful and greets you... More

Hidatei ryokan is a lovely full service, large, efficiently managed ryokan. The rooms are spacious, meals elaborate and excellent, and service top-notch. Unlike other ryoken we have stayed in, rooms at Hidatei include living area, bedroom, and full bath. Also, unlike other ryoken, meals are served in a separate dining area away from bedrooms. The outdoor onsen on a cold... More

We had a really great suite (room 322) but you can also have rooms with a private pool (which we did at our previous hotel). The dining experience is excellent traditional Japanese (with continental breakfast if you wish), in a private room with your own assistant for the duration of your stay. Ours had perfectly fluent English. The bath houses... More

It was a great surprise! Loved the concept of a 'shoe less' hotel, which makes total sense when in a traditional Japanese home. The half-board is a must as the meals are served to perfection in private rooms. Staff is extremely polite and well trained, with some of them speaking English very well. During the meals they are glad to... More

Takayama is a mountain vacation spot principally for the Japanese as well as foreign visitors. They demand a level of service, quality and finish that I have not found in western hotels. They deliver this experience with the highest excellence at Hotel Hanaoughi. And it is delivered so faultlessly, with a grace and without obligation they almost make you feel... More

This was our first time in a ryokan (though we also did a temple stay in Koyasan which was a similar experience) and we were not impressed, especially for the price of over $600/night. Overall, we found the staff to be very polite and attentive, but we never felt welcomed there. The ryokan is not central and there is a... More

This experience is really worthwhile. Upon arrival you are greeted by a staff member that will follow you throughout your stay. You are "forced" to wear a kimono already from the hall and to leave your shoes. Nice and big "onseng" available within the hotel, there is also a hot water bath for relaxing near the entrance hall. Our room... More
