My husband and I stayed for three nights in November. This is a traditional Japanese hotel, so sleeping on the floor, tatami mats, green tea welcoming ceremony, communal bathing, wearing Yukata around the hotel etc etc. As this is authentic it may be challenging for some westerners. We loved it. The hotel has three dinner options to choose from in... More

This ryokan is a fantastic example of Japanese hospitality, warmth, friendliness and authenticity. Our group of 5 thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our 2 day stay and wished we had stayed longer. We wished for this experience and it delivered on every level. The warmth and friendliness of this property begins when they pick you up at the train station... More

We travelled as a family of 2 adults + 2 kids (age 9 &4) in June (rainy season) Likes: Location- 100m from Little Kyoto lane full of cafes, trinket shops, sake shops and restaurants. We rented bicycles and cycled all around Takayama. View- Some rooms have a view of the river Heater under room table which is a nice touch... More

If your wish is for an authentic ryokan experience, then this place will deliver. However, be careful what you wish for. Your stay will begin with a short welcome ceremony. You will then be taken to your room and introduced to the hotel by a hostess. She will also note your preferences for food and meal times. You will then... More

Our time in Takayama was fantastic due to our stay at honjinhiranoya. We arrived to the welcome 'gong', naoko looked after us, gave us socks, toothbrushes, afternoon tea with food which was appreciated after our long train ride. Diner was well....interesting, Japanese which didn't really suit my friend but we had our own room and felt very special. Everyone who... More

Loved the location, the service, the food, the experience & atmosphere. Something special for every foreigner visiting Japan. I've stay in many hotels all around asia, but a japanese style is simply something different. I was traveling with my older parents and the staff tried to make our stay as pleasant as possible.

24 hours was all it took for us to fall in love with this Inn and this city: Beautiful Cherry Blossoms in full bloom throughout the city, shops of all kinds and higher quality than many of the other touristy areas we had visited, and two of the most authentic and tasty Japanese meals (keiseki) that we could imagine. A... More

Luxury from A to Z. You are being met at the station by a chauffeur driven limousine. The room is spacious and well equipped. You get your Japanese dresses, ready to go to the public bath on the ground floor. Dinner is sensational as is breakfast. It's a bit costly, but worth its while.

We spent 1 romantic day at the hotel and had a fairly good time. The room was rather nice, dinner and breakfast were very nice and all staff members were so kind. We could feel Japanese service style that is comfortable. Our stay was a very good experience, which we can warmly recommend.
