The room was a suite with ensuite private onsen, and it was very nice, the dressing room, waiting room, washroom. I felt the ensuite private onsen was just a tad lacking in the set up; little things such as the decor and atmosphere, the feel of the tub, the texture of the wood. (that said, the lobby, and building, as... More

Like so many other travelers, we really wanted to get a feel for the traditional as well as the ultra-modern Japan. Having just come off a whirlwind few days in a warm spring-time Tokyo, teeming with hoards of Japanese and international tourists crowded around every cherry tree displaying even the slightest hint of a blossom, gaggles of anime-baby-doll-styled women and... We stayed here for one night when visiting Takayama. We have stayed in ryokans before but this one didn't really compare favourably as it fell between two stools - halfway between a traditional ryokan and a hotel - and was neither one thing nor the other. The accommodation and the food was perfectly nice but it didn't have a particularly... More

We had a hectic trip until we arrived here. It was a really relaxing place to stay. The food was good the service was excellent. If your looking for a western style hotel its not but it does very well what it sets out to be. I would recommend staying here.

I had decided to stay in a ryokan in a relatively small town, and Takayama is a beautiful, quaint place in the Japanese Alps with much edo-style architecture. I had called 2 days before to confirm my reservation for ONE person since I was asked how many and what gender. I took the very convenient shuttle just minutes after arrival... More

It's little bit disappointed to stay at Hanaougi Bettei Iiyama. We booked three Japanese-style Rooms with Open-air Bath. Rooms: - Not worth to pay an expensive room charge: different furniture and settings at 3 rooms, one with old air-conditioners and furniture - Traditional Japanese style but no feeling of luxury or royal class of hotel - Not pleasant smell at... This is the smaller sister to Hidatei which we originally wanted to stay at. Whereas Hidatei feels more like a hotel/resort style, Bettei is more like a boutique style accommodation. The good thing though is that both are only 5 min from each other, and we were free to use the onsens from both. We stayed one night but i... More

We have just stayed for 2 nights in the maisonettes and it has been lovely! The staff are so warm and welcoming and do their very best to accommodate you in every way possible. I am sorry to say am not a fan of Japanese food and when I mentioned this to the girl who has looked after us she... More

Our family of four stayed here at the end of June. This hotel is away from the tourist area, so we did not use it as our base for sightseeing in Takayama. We stayed at this hotel to have a ryokan experience, which was relaxing and wonderful. There is a shuttle bus which takes guests to and from the train... More

During July 2011 I spent a week in Takayama. I used the Hanaougi Ryokan as my base during 8 days of hard cycling training in the beautiful mountains surrounding Takayama. I'm used to stay at ryokans all over Japan and in many ways Hanaougi was what I expected. The entrance/reception area is huge, open and filled with tables and old... More
