Our second visit, this time with Architect's friends from Thailand. Whereas the first time visit was on a hot and sunny day, this time we visited in on and off pouring rain. The garden, the house and the bungalow rooms which we toured with the experienced guide offered a complete different impression. Ideal for black and white photography, this mood... More

You can opt to either visit or staying at Lunuganga. This palatial mansion was once a residence of the great master architect, Geoffrey Bawa. He's known to come up with the "tropical modernism" movement and for those of us that are enthusiastic with architecture, coming here is a pilgrimage to appreciate Geoffrey's brilliance. He's so much ahead of his time,... More

It felt like a rare privilege to stay at Lunuganga. Our senses were awakened to the aesthetics. We came away mesmerised by the shades of green, shapes, proportion, balance - subtle beauty that we had not previously appreciated. The meals on the verandah were excellent with a sublimely understated backdrop. But the highlight was wandering the gardens alone early in... More

We did not stay at Lunuganga but enjoyed a wonderful luncheon set in the gardens of this amazing property. My 3rd visit - the charm & character of Lunuganga still prevails & the magic of the place is evident from the moment you ring the bell at the front gate & escorted through the wonderful lush grounds of the estate.... Our daughter,an architect, had stayed here with her husband in 2012 & told us that we must visit this special place. We were not disappointed. The trust has done a wonderful job in maintaining the property & managing Bawa's legacy. It was an honour to stay here. Sitting having dinner on the verandah, looking through the window forming branches of... More

Lunuganga is a very special place, and was the highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka. We were seeking an escape from city life, and found that at Lunuganga. The gardens are incredibly beautiful; we spent much of our time walking and exploring. We had the chance to spot a troop of purple-faced leaf monkeys, who took us by surprise!... More

I was glad I did not cancel my two-night stay at Lunuganga. A recent review criticized the estate for being old and worn out, and I was foolish enough to have bought the "lies". Thank God I followed my heart and gave Mr Bawa's country home a chance... and boy, did I have an unforgettable experience! Lunuganga is NOT a... More

Lunuganga is a place of pilgrimage for admirers of Geoffrey Bawa’s architecture and garden design. Don't expect a slick international hotel, Lunuganga has the air of a gently decayed historic site ... there is no television, wifi, room service or a mini bar, just simple food and the sound of birds and the rain dripping from the trees. The rooms... More

Geoffrety Bawa, the Sri Lankan architect, is held is almost religious reverence in the country, and students of architecture make a visit to Lunuganga, Bawa's former home, something on the order of a pilgrimage. Okay if that's what you like, but this is no place for anyone looking for an enjoyable holiday, and it is impossibly overpriced for what it... More

Lunuganga is truly a hidden gem. Close to the beaches of Bentota, it is the best that Sri Lanka has to offer in terms of beauty, serenity and service. Those interested in architecture and landscape design may want to read up on this lifelong experiment of Geoffrey Bawa. We stayed at Cinnamon Hill house, built in the characteristic style of... More
