The property is reminiscent of the old colonial charm with well maintained rooms & a lovely garden. The garden & the greenery attracts a variety of small birds & a group of Bonnet Macaques were seen frolicking among the huge trees (maybe a few hundred years old). Located just a stone throw from the beautiful Sim's Park, we enjoyed every bit... More

This place was very peaceful in terms of the property. It is not like a commercial hotel or a resort. This has a home like feel. The structure, the look, the furnitures all give it a colonial British era feel. The staff was very courteous. Food is made to order and was simple & tasty. Nothing grand. Breakfast had fruits... The house is lovely. Is a pleasant break away from the typical mould of the 5 star category hotels. Clean property, non-intrusive service. Open area to run around keeps children happy, though it would be useful to have a swing and a slide around to keep them occupied. Food is made to order, and quite well made. If looking for... More

We were a group of 4 friends who visited Coonoor recently and stayed at Wallwood Garden. We stayed in Gulmohar and Jacaranda. The place more than met our expectations. The stay was comfortable and Geeta with her staff was absolutely brilliant. The food was delicious and gave us the feeling of a home cooked meal. The "non hotel" hotel is... More

My husband and I spent 3 comfortable nights at Wallwood Garden. We arrived from Mysore to a warm welcome from Geetha and her small staff. We slept in the lovely Acacia room with its colonial era furniture. We had spent much time and enjoyment planning this trip to Sth India, a welcome return to this lovely part of the world... More

Wallwood Garden Bit sick of day in day out blazing sun and heat? So were the early British merchants. I'm not exactly sure how they made the journey West from their trading posts from Chennai downwards because even now it's time-consuming. There's the Nilgiri Express from Chennai which mimicks their movements and there are a variety of transport combinations from... More

Wallwood Bungalow in the lovely highlands and tea country of Coonoor was a welcome respite after days of travel and one night at a time stops for a week. Clearly a former home, the wood floor, high ceiling, tiny fireplaces (yes, we enjoyed an evening in front of the fire with tea and books!), and breakfast room overlooking the horticultural... More

We arrived at night and were kindly greeted and showed to our 4 rooms. 3 rooms were just lovely, antiques, old-fashioned, huge bathrooms with old-style bathing. Totally charming. The last one was approached from the outside and had moldy carpeting. We requested a change and luckily there was another room, off of the outside dining room, that was available. Hopefully,... More

Wallwood Garden describes itself as a 'non hotel' and that is very accurate. If you want a glossy, corporate look-alike hotel in Coonor, don't stay at Wallwood Garden! But if you want a fascinating, welcoming, charming, one-off sort of place with a real heart, Wallwood Garden is for you! Breakfast is a bit on the minimal side, but everything else... More

Lovely old building that has been given over to a hotel with little done to change the way it was. Staff, especially Geetha, could not be more helpful. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Two hours from Coimbatore, Wallwood – earlier known as Blair Atholl – in the heart of upper Coonoor, was built over a hundred years ago by a Scottish Major General, hailing from the village Blair Athol in Scotland (the Duke of Atholl still lives in Scotland in his own castle). Wallwood was later sold to a British couple after the First World War, who ran it as a boarding house for many years. It was purchased by Liptons before the Second World War and the house has remained in the hands of tea companies – currently with Matheson Bosanquet. The Mansion has retained the atmosphere of the past when tea estates had their own lifestyle! It has its own prize-winning garden of the Nilgiris overlooking a unique pomological garden. It is located two minutes from Sim’s Park, one of India’s most luxuriant Botanical Gardens, laid out in 1874 with over 1200 species of plants and many old rare trees like the Rudraksh, Paperwood, Elephant Leg, Strawberry Tree etc. Savour the wildlife sanctuaries of Ooty, Pykara, Kotagiri & Bandipur, driving through the lush tea plantations of the Nilgiris. ... more   less
