The Scholar made us feel comfortable from the first moment. Very friendly staff, competent reception, warm athmosphere with books, calligraphy, paintings. Rooms quite modern, but comfortable and a great breakfast ( just the service concerning breakfast could be improved).

The hotel is within walking distance to the gardens and the city centre. The service was great and the room was nice. I only stayed there for one night and the only downside was that I didn't quite like the bathroom. The plan of the room was not what you'd usually expect. The shower and toilet were placed at different... More

Short stay to visit the magnificent Chinese Scholar gardens. We found that this hotel was a great homebase for exploring historic Suzhou and the gardens. The room was spacious and quiet, bed comfortable, bathroom well appointed and all was very clean. Air conditioner worked well to temper the heat and humidity. We really appreciated that we could walk to the... More

I stayed at the Scholar's Hotel for a business conference in August. The rooms were very spacious and well-appointed, and were clearly very new. The hotel itself is walking distance from some of Suzhou's most famous walking streets and canals, and a short taxi ride from the Humble Administrator's Garden and Suzhou Museum. The restaurant and bar served a decent... More

The hotel is located close to the pedestrian Pingjiang street and the Humble Administrators Garden. From the outside it does not look like much but the rooms are excellent in a very nice setting. The interior is classic Chinese and they put a lot of effort in to details. To mention one they had incense in the rooms and fruit. Also... More

We learned from someone that this is the only state run hotel in Suzhou. For a state-run hotel, it's service is very good. The rooms are very spacious and very tastefully done. It integrates traditional aesthetic with modern convenience. I especially love the wood floors throughout (no tired or dirty carpet). Lovely breakfast buffet with many local Suzhou flavors (the... We stayed at the Scholar's for 4 nights in a lovely large room. The hotel itself is small and very attractive. But what is outstanding is its location. We walked to many places, including restaurants. The one downside was the hotel's bar. Although it claimed to be a regular bar and even had a drink menu, we were unable to... More

I hate to admit this, I have to agree with the last reviewer of this hotel. And this is one hotel among the many which I have stayed before, which I decided to switch to another by cutting short my stay. What went terribly wrong was the smell or should I say stench in the room, especially at the toilet.... More

Room and hotel looks exactly like the pictures... Beautiful but what pictures are not able to portray is the SMELL! The room had a funky smell, toilet plumbing must be bad since it was clean but had a bad odour! Room was stuffy with no air con due to the season of the year but with the smell and heater... More

We arrived at this hotel at 2am after our flight had been delayed. I don't think they were too keen to see us! We had to pull bags over to our block of rooms & heave them up a ramp on a flight of steps. The rooms were beautiful with the best bed on the trip. Silk duvets were fabulous.... More
