A thoroughly pleasant hotel experience; comfortable, well-furnished rooms, decent food (including a massive complimentary breakfast), and even reasonably fast internet connection! I stayed here in May, during the New Year celebrations (aka the famous Water Festivals!) and had a wonderful time. As I was travelling alone, and seemed to be the only guest in the hotel (more to do with... more

We stayed here for just one night in the middle of our most recent trip to Myanmar in October, 2008. After a week or so of staying in cheap guesthouses, coming here was like an oasis! When we pulled up, the power had just gone out (city rationing). Within 3 minutes the generators were turned on and the AC was... more

I wonder when you review a hotel should you measure it against every other hotel you have stayed at in the world or should you measure it only against hotels in the same country? We stayed in 5 different hotels during our amazing holiday in Myanmar and this little boutique hotel probably scored the lowest score but that was because... more

I have mixed feelings about this hotel. Firstly the staff make this hotel - the girls on teh reseption desk are simply fantastic. Their English is amazing, they are friendly and just about the nicest people you will ever meet! They will make your stay there. The rooms were also lovely, maybe a little small but lovely. It is a... more

While traveling/backpacking around SE Asia over the past half decade I've stayed 300 or so nights in both 5 star hotels and $2 guest houses: of all those nights, the most memorable experience I've had was at the Hotel Red Canal. Attention to detail, service, and unexpected luxury: This is what you'll find at the hotel. As important as these... more

The Hotel at Red Canal is an excellent boutique style hotel located close to many of the major attractions in Mandalay (the National Palace is literally at the end of the street within easy walking distance; and Mandalay Hill and downtown are a short trishaw ride away costing no more than 1 USD). The hotel and its grounds are not... more

MY TRAVEL STYLE: I hate business hotels and strongly prefer resorts that resemble the Four Seasons, Aman, and Oberoi but try to find similar properties at lower cost. I seek out the “wow” experiences and I encourage you to view hotels I have stayed at and their respective reviews (by clicking on my name). LOCATION: Very good but most hotels... more

One of the highlights of our travels through Myanmar was our stay at the Hotel at the Red Canal. Small, intimate, beautifully designed with high ceilings and luscious teak floors, the hotel is a memorable spot both for its beauty and tranquility. In mood and feel it reminded us of a high end Japanese ryokan where the guest is king.... more

We spent a week at the Hotel by the Red Canal and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ashwin Kumar and his staff went out of their way to ensure we were thoroughly pampered. The initial attraction of this hotel was its size - only about 15 rooms and the fact that it is within walking distance of the city. We chose an... more

The rooms are very nice. The grounds are beautiful. I spent several hours sitting on the veranda, drinking a beer and relaxing. The staff is proficient in English, very friendly and always helpful. Coming to the hotel after a day in the dusty streets of Mandalay feels like arriving at a beautiful oasis after a long caravan journey across the... more
