It seems like the reviews for the Sand Hills Lighthouse are the extremes. People that write the reviews either love it or hate it. I would say that 95% of the people that would stay at the Sand Hills Lighthouse would enjoy themselves. First the lighthouse is beautiful and the rooms are all very clean and comfortable. The view of... more

A lovely Lighthouse on Lake Superior, but beware of what awaits you! We were very excited about staying at the Inn until we arrived. We were greeted by " Merry Mary," and she was not happy with us for arriving late. We arrived at 8:30 pm which did not go over well with Mary. We were greeted with sarcastic remarks... more

I can't get over some of the negative reviews here. If you have anti-social tendencies, are looking for a 5-star, Disney resort with no life or a rugged, Outward bound-style vacation, then Sand Hills probably won't be your cup of tea. If, however, you are looking for a slower pace, beautiful natural scenery, a place with some history, a room... more

My partner & I booked a room at this establishment for 2 nights, as a “treat” to break up a rugged camping holiday. The building itself was structurally and historically interesting and the location was quite remote and beautiful. The proprietors, however, were quite strange, Mary (called herself 'Merry Mary') especially. Although Bill, with his Elvis hairpiece and perpetual black... more

My wife and I stayed at the lighthouse on our "pre-honeymoon" after getting married on Mackinac Island. What a truly incredible experience! It was a dream come true for lighthouse buffs. The lighthouse is packed with historical items (including a Fresnel lens) and period furnishings. Our room was nicely furnished and had a balcony overlooking the grounds and water. We... more

We have been to 30-50 B&Bs over the years and by far this was the most dusty and cluttered place we have stayed. It was getting towards the end of the season when we stayed, but not an excuse for the number of dead bugs we found in the room especially the windows. Breakfast was quite good, but you had... more

Our experience was borderline creepy. We arrived to being told that our room with a balcony really wasn't ours (someone else had it already). OK, ,we can make do. The room we were given was not clean (dust on the knick knacks and furniture). The bathroom in our room was very nice (quality fixtures, good shower). Breakfasts were good but... more

What a wonderful experience. My wife and I spent our 20th wedding anniversray there. We fell in love with it as soon as we saw it. We are already planning on going back at the end of the summer more

What a disaster. The innkeepers seem to have the notion that running an inn is their chance to showcase themselves at their guests' expense, and they force comraderie upon all who stay there. While I will concede that they offer an excellent breakfast, that's only if you are willing to wait until 9:30 AM to get it. You are then... more

The inn is a lighthouse with spectacular views of Lake Superior. We stayed in a room with a balcony overlooking the lake and slept with the doors to the balconyand windows open so we could hear the waves cascading on the shores until we fell asleep. What a restful and relaxing place! The lighthouse tower is available to the guests... more
