Really enjoyed my stay in Belgrade overall. The location was perfect for sightseeing, shopping and nightlife. Hotel bar was really grand and service excellent throughout the hotel. The only good thing about the Balkan is its central location. The rooms are "compact" and the bathrooms positively microscopic. If you have any difficulties with manoeuvrability it would be extremely difficult to get into the shower/bath or to turn around! The hotel apparently just received its 4 star. For the ones who remember and stayed at the old hotel it is of course a huge improvement.
