The good: location and views. The bad: smelled bad despite overtones of chemical cleaners. Desperately needs a makeover. The ugly: toilet didn't flush in the first room "fix manyana" Don't think so. Changed rooms. Toilet also not working properly but worse - might as well have used a teaspoon to shower with - no pressure and only warm water. Ended... More

Stayed here for a week for new year. Very central location. Was a little dated and basic compared to places I usually stay but it us a hostel after all. I could not praise the staff enough. They were so helpful and welcoming. Good price and could not fault it. They included a breakfast and there was use of a... More

Thought I had a reservation but when I arrived there was no one there, literally. This after climbing the 6 floors with all my gear. The security grate was closed and although a tv was blaring no one came. I stayed about 30 minutes banging and knocking and yelling but no one came (it was about 2 pm) Finally went... More

Admittedly, at $34/night for the two of us, it was a bit of a splurge, but Cuenca is Cuenca ergo prices all over are higher than we normally like to pay. Yet we feel that warm afterglow of satisfaction that arises from having gotten what we paid for and more. Bathroom-spotless-and cleaned every day. I looked under the bed as... More

Excellent customer service =) I came with my grandma , the hostel is very comfortable clean, unbeatable location. The view from the kitchen/eating area is great. It is walking distance to Parque Calderon, the Cathedrals, etc. Good value for breakfast included. 100% recommended.

We stayed only briefly but enjoyed our stay. The older man who was running the place was so friendly (although speaks no English) and was more than helpful in directing us where to go to eat and what to do in Cuenca. We stayed in a private room with private bathroom with TV and wifi and had no complaints except... More

I ended up at El Monaterio aftyer all other hostals in Cuenca were booked due to a concert. I took a private room with bathroom. Th ebed was comfy, bethroom and shower working fine and the hostal has a lovely rooftop terrace and a well equipped kitchen. The staff is very nice and helpful. WIth 15$ per night that might... We stayed for 5 nights in this hostel where the owner was really rude and unfriendly since day 1 but the worst was that we got biten by bedbugs (about 30 bites) in 2 different bedrooms plus they have cockroaches in the kitchen and toilets, we informed the owner about that and he reacted angry and insulting us so bad... Good points: * Has warm water * Fantastic view - it's on the 6th floor overlooking San Francisco square & the mountains * Good size rooms * Clean Bad points: * Old town is very very quite at night * That locked gate is good for safety but not to stand outside in the dark until someone answers the bell...
